Bad grammar from our kids' schoolteachers/staff

I've just read the most disgusting grammar on the weekly newsletter from my 9 year old's school. It's made me quite angry I'm afraid. Embarrassingly so actually so I came here instead of emailing the office like a dickhead. Sorry to carry on like this but these are the people educating my child and she could write the thing better herself! Morons!
There is a sign on a door in school saying "DINNING ROOM" and one in reception saying "VISITOR LANYARD'S".
I'm so mad.
Thanks guys. Feeling better already.
PS. I'm not a grammar Nazi - spell how you like if you're not responsible for my child's education.

I think it's fair enough to raise the concern with the school.

CurlewKate · 19/06/2023 20:41

Were these things written by teachers?

Flora56 · 19/06/2023 20:46

How do you know the people who wrote the signs are responsible for educating your child? I’d maybe mention it to the school if it upsets you.

We get, "myself and" all the bloody time.

watcherintherye · 19/06/2023 20:54

Reminds me of when mine were at junior school, and we used to get a weekly newsletter including the dinner menu for the following week. At the bottom of the menu, there would be a line saying that bread and crudities would be available every lunchtime, which always made me smile!

PastTheGin · 19/06/2023 20:54

YANBU. I am a teacher and English is not my mother tongue. The ability of a lot of people in education to spell and use grammar is shocking, and let’s not talk about general knowledge, either.

WateryDoom · 19/06/2023 21:03

It's unlikely to be teachers who have written the signs, if that's any comfort.

It will be admin staff.

Covidwoes · 19/06/2023 21:51

Completely unacceptable, but YABU OP to think/assume that the teachers have written those signs. I've been teaching for years, and not once have I been responsible for what's on a sign. I do agree, however, that such mistakes are unacceptable in a school, regardless of who they are written by.

Thereoughttobeclowns · 19/06/2023 21:56

Unacceptable, regardless of who wrote them. Raise it with the school.

Teachers (and children) see them everyday and no one has corrected them. There are no excuses.

IsItHalfTermYetHelp · 19/06/2023 21:58

We had a Poster advertising “lolly’s” for sale
after school. Written by a teacher. The weekly
newsletter was embarrassingly badly written.

MidgeHardcastle · 19/06/2023 21:59

Well what's in the newsletter that's so 'disgusting'?

TeenagersAngst · 19/06/2023 22:01

I saw a card for sale last week (in a major card shop) which read - To all the amazing dad's - bad SPAG is all around us, even from those who should know better.

UsingChangeofName · 19/06/2023 22:01

Saying "the most disgusting grammar" seems something of an over reaction, but I do think a quiet word with someone at the school to point out it doesn't reflect well on the school to have spelling mistakes on signage in the school, and on newsletters it is sending out would be the right thing to do.

cryinglaughing · 19/06/2023 22:03

I worked in a high school where the head of English signed herself as going to visit a primery school 🙈

oofmehip · 19/06/2023 22:07

Oh god, it really is everywhere now isn't it? Standards are just so very low. It seriously bugs me- I'm a teacher and the number of staff (including teachers) who can't seem to write using basic grammar correctly is depressing.

The other day I heard that the deputy head at my niece's school sent out a letter with the word 'brung' in it.

WhenIWasAFieldMyself · 19/06/2023 22:07

Someone who thinks it's OK to use the horrifically ablist and well-documented as socially unacceptable term "m*ron" kind of loses any linguistic high ground they might think they're on tbf.

I'd rather the admin staff at my child's school made a spelling mistake on a sign than use language like the OP's.

@Summerslimtime
We received 'in this instance you can contact myself' from the head of English at a Grammar school!
😠

Namechangeforthisthread12 · 19/06/2023 22:16

I work in education. One of my colleagues thought Rishi Sunak was the Pry Minister

oofmehip · 19/06/2023 22:21

Jesus. And there's nothing bloody wrong with 'moron' FFS. "Horrifically ablist"?! I think not.

cocksstrideintheevening · 19/06/2023 22:22

Same in our school and it drives me mad. We also have free for three wiv for with from head. 🤦🏻‍♀️

stargirl1701 · 19/06/2023 22:22

The school newsletter is often typed by admin staff rather than teachers.

SparklingMarkling · 19/06/2023 22:25

LOL when parents are FINALLY waking up to the shit show that is UNQUALIFIED teachers. I shouldn’t laugh, it’s NOT fucking funny at all but a little part of me is quite pleased that schools can no longer hide the farce that is education.

I highly doubt this teacher has been to university, let alone gone through teacher training.

Bearpawk · 19/06/2023 22:26

Ex teacher here, and a lady I grew up with who was in the lowest sets at school is now a TA, helping kids with spelling and grammar. She's barely literate tbh. But the job pays not much above min. Wage so they're hardly attracting the cream of the crop, academically.
I used to find it very awkward constantly correcting my TA's spelling on displays etc.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 19/06/2023 22:27

I'm school admin. I have no idea why being able to spell and use grammar correctly is not part of the person spec to be honest. If a head recruits someone who is not good at basics like that then they'll have to run an eye over everything that person sends out.
