Bad grammar from our kids' schoolteachers/staff

I've just read the most disgusting grammar on the weekly newsletter from my 9 year old's school. It's made me quite angry I'm afraid. Embarrassingly so actually so I came here instead of emailing the office like a dickhead. Sorry to carry on like this but these are the people educating my child and she could write the thing better herself! Morons!
There is a sign on a door in school saying "DINNING ROOM" and one in reception saying "VISITOR LANYARD'S".
I'm so mad.
Thanks guys. Feeling better already.
PS. I'm not a grammar Nazi - spell how you like if you're not responsible for my child's education.

I remember pointing out a spelling mistake to my DD's teacher.

The spelling mistake was on the sheet of words the children had to learn for the spellings test that week.

It would be lovely to think that this couldn't possibly be teachers (and it probably isn't in this case) but I do the HR for a large school and the spelling and grammar in some applications from qualified teachers is atrocious.

You're not wrong Op - standards are just so low nowadays that it feels sinful!

My late DH was Deputy Head of a school. The admin person used to send him every single document or letter that the Head sent her to be distributed, for my DH to correct the SPAG. DH, as a teaching deputy had a huge workload as it was, but the admin person knew it was too bad to send out, and DH couldn't bear the potential embarrassment for the school if the newsletters etc went out to the public as the Head at written them.

I am a teacher for 40 years. When l was in school and when l started out in teaching they were the most highly educated people who got the best exam results. Older, retired teachers around here are so well read with broad interests and high standards. On our first day at teacher training college we were told we were " the cream of the crop!!" We had to go through two interviews as well as achieving very high exam results to get accepted. Now anyone with high results is opting for engineering/ computer programming etc as teaching is seen as a low paid job.
I have seen quite shocking things down through the years with very poor grasp of geography/ history/current affairs and of course, grammar. It's not considered important anymore. I always scrutinise the newsletter etc to make sure there are no grammar or spelling errors but the younger teachers would laugh at me doing that.
Even my own dm was a stickler for good grammar and had a very high standard of education even though she left school at 16. She had been taught well. Things are just changing.

My school insists on putting "super" in front of everything. Even when I've submitted something for the school newsletter, someone (at senior level) will change it to include the word super and then put my name against it! E.g. Children have made a wonderful display gets changed to children have made a super display. All the social media follows the same pattern. It's not exactly inspiring a range of vocabulary when everything is "super" and it drives me mad when they sign off as me!

SparklingMarkling · 19/06/2023 22:46

@DragonCatcher

Super or incredible. Honestly, ‘school speak’ is nauseating and don’t even get me started on ‘teacher voice’.

Youknowaboutthepaint · 19/06/2023 22:51

Our head sends letters to her PA to "grammarise" before they go out.

DragonCatcher · 19/06/2023 22:52

@SparklingMarkling incredible would be a nice change at my place 🤣

Well what's in the newsletter that's so 'disgusting'?

Yes, I'd like to know this, as the OP has not told us what was so bad that it was not only incorrect, but disgusting ( a strange word to describe grammar mistakes).

Jesus. And there's nothing bloody wrong with 'moron' FFS. "Horrifically ablist"?! I think not.

Completely agree 🙄 Honestly this sort of shit is why MN has the reputation it does.
