Missing Titanic submarine

How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off.

The people on board must be terrified!

Just read this about James Cameron being down at the Titanic scuba diving for a few minutes. £200million to spend a few mins scuba diving around the bow of the Titanic.

I think that might be a spoof article, it's from 1st April

Surely to God that's a joke article. No one would scuba dive at that depth, you'd be killed instantly. Plus the story about finding a "board" for two people to lie on and be rescued..... Its got to be a spoof

But it's a proven piece of kit - highly reliable and proven from many millions of hours use by millions of people every day. It makes perfect sense. The engineering in a Ferrari steering wheel is 99% the same as a Ford Fiesta one.
Some people are speaking from a position of ignorance.

Hey, I'm not arguing with you, on the contrary. I'm just saying that most people would view a games controller as being very rudimentary technology, a toy essentially. Most of us have grown up on a diet of shiny Sci-fi movies, and are under the impression that science = big bucks and expensive tech. In their mind's eye, a vessel that's piloted in such a simple fashion is probably going to be basic in many ways, with basic equalling unsafe.

Rinoachicken · 20/06/2023 13:29

@stbrandonsboat I agree about hiding behind a facade of science.

On their website they talk about scanning the wreck and site etc, and there is a very poor scan reddition as an ‘example’ on the webpage.

But this has already been done infinitely better by other companies - back in May Magellan and and Atlantic Productions released the results of their scanning work undertaken the year before and it’s incredible work, the results were showcased by the BBC. And the mapping was done by UNMANNED vessels.

Contrast it with what Oceangate are claiming to be doing on the their webpage and the questions is just why? Why do we need to put people at risk by sending them down their in manned vessels when others have already achieved greater and more useful results with unmanned vessels?

I read somewhere that if it imploded, mothership or other equipment nearby should've picked it up? Has anyone else read this?

If it hasn't imploded then that leaves stuck at the dive site; stuck on surface; trapped midway down?

Could there have been a water breach or other failure closer to the surface? Incapacitating the occupants but not necessarily killing the pings yet or causing implosion? The vessel may have been pinging after it was already breached?

waterlego · 20/06/2023 13:33

Yes, a spoof article. The deepest scuba dive ever performed was about 330 metres. The Titanic is at 3800 metres. But Cameron did go to 10,908 metres to the Mariana Trench in a submersible on a solo trip.

That article is clearly a piss take Confused

About someone called Cameron James. Doing something not humanly possible.

waterlego · 20/06/2023 13:35

This from the James Cameron article makes it pretty clear it’s a spoof:

“I passed wind in my specially constructed drysuit,’ said James, with a sheepish grin. ‘The suit expanded so rapidly, I started to look like the Michelin Man in no short order.
‘Fortunately, I was at that same moment staring at a discarded hat-pin,’ said James. ‘I poked a hole in the arm of the suit, just big enough to allow the gas to escape, but not enough that the squeeze would crush the family jewels,’ he joked.”

There is literally nothing else to do other than gawp at a grave site from a small window - these extreme explorers (or whatever they want to call themselves) are not contributing anything scientifically and aren't learning anything which isn't already known. They chose to put themselves at huge risk and unfortunately it's gone wrong for them. I really hope that none of the rescuers are put at risk as a result.

That's just not true though. They're looking at how the wreck degrades over time due to the effect of metal eating bacteria. They're also looking at how reefs form over time and what life lives at these enormous depths (last year they announced the discovery of a volcanic reef discovered near the site of the wreck). It wouldn't be possible to do this at a site other than the Titanic as there is nowhere else in the world that people will pay to go back to again and again.

Whether you think this is important or not it's false to say that they're not contributing anything scientifically. I think it's also fair to say that the huge majority (if not all) human innovations are built on the shoulders of hobbies, failed experiments and "useless" endeavours that turned out to be anything but useless.

personlinfonamechg · 20/06/2023 13:37

I think it's particularly sad for the young chap. I have a nearly 19 year old and they're not really old enough to evaluate these dangerous situations and make an informed decision.

I disagree. While it will be sad if they are not rescued and his long life is prematurely cut short, he is still an adult and capable of making decisions such as this. You can join the army, just one example (and apply before 18) and take part in active duty. 19 year olds are more than capable of making informed decisions.

It would be so easy for the vessel to get caught in a loose fishing net as just one example of what could have happened. I doubt we'll ever find it, actually. I hope they have cyanide pills with them. No reason to suspect they do, but I think I would want one.

I said this to a friend today. That I hope they were given cyanide tablets just in case.

Can people really imagine what these souls must be going through? I can’t.

I did a double take then! Scuba diving around the Titanic wreckage, at that depth 🤔😀

MN is such an odd place, if I were to comment on a new event that I didn’t care because they were poor, I would (quite rightly) be flamed. But for some reason it’s always more acceptable on MN for horrible things to happen to affluent people, why is that?

Did you check the date that one was published?

Igneococcus · 20/06/2023 13:42

@SinnerBoy
I've been out at sea with ROV Jason twice, and a few other cruises with different ROVs, but Jason is the one that I have most experience with. It's run, like Alvin, by Woods Hole. It has all kind of imaging systems, sonar, lights and video system and it's all streamed to the ship in real time. There are screens pretty much everywhere on the ship and you can see what is going on at the seafloor at all times, it's great. For the cruises I've been on there were always platforms down with the ROV that samples could be loaded onto, and that carried additional equipment, and which could be brought up while the ROV stayed down. The ROV operated 24 h, with pilots, navigators and scientists divided into shifts so that there was always a team running the ROV, until the cruise ended, or the ROV needed to be brought up because a storm approached. There is nothing better than being out at sea on a ship full of scientists and crew all working together.

I doubt very much anyone handed them cyanide tablets. In fact, I'm willing to bet they'd think twice about continuing on with the trip if that came in their welcome pack.

I had first googled if it was possible to which the answer was clearly no. But then the next article popped up on Google "first successful scuba..." So I'm confused and then reading the article there are so many red flags that I'm perplexed at but the penny still didn't drop.

In my defence I'm very very tired!

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 20/06/2023 13:46

And what led me to asking the question was because I'd read on twitter someone saying loads of places have been left on the Titanic as a memorial and then I was wondering how the places were placed there .

There are sadly some people on MN with a very warped view of humanity and who genuinely have a problem with empathy! I think this whole scenario is sickening and cannot imagine the unimaginable…hoping for a miracle🙏🤞
