Missing Titanic submarine

How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off.

The people on board must be terrified!

I can see the attraction to be fair. I find the titanic fascinating.

Same. I think for me, it's the fact that it's still sitting there at the bottom of the ocean. With all our technology and hubris, we still haven't found a way to bring it up and stick it in a museum and make it accessible. Just shows the tremendous power and danger of the sea.
Having said that, nothing could have persuaded me into that submersible.
My guess is it imploded and the men inside knew very little about it.

You could say that about anything - climbing Everest, going on safari, scuba diving, caving, even hill walking. It's the human spirit of adventure and exploration. Everyone feels is to a greater or lesser extent, clearly these guys are at the extreme.

Yes, true. I'm unadventourous, and adverse to taking risks, some might say boring. While others are adrenalin junkies. We are all different.

An interesting visual comparison of various sea depths:

For comparison, the recent terrible tragedy with the migrant boat sinking near Greece - its thought that the wreck is sitting at over 5000m down. I'd never thought the Mediterranean was so deep.

I watched a video where a titantic survivor was interviewed. She said before she made for the lifeboats she made sure all her trunks in her room where securely locked. Blows my mind to think they are still at the bottom of the ocean.

beeonmybonnett · 20/06/2023 11:41

I know it’s in no way comparable, but it very much makes me think of the time my brother (when we were kids) locked me in the boot of my parent’s car as a prank.

Even though it was only for a few minutes, I felt overwhelmingly claustrophobic lying inside a tight, narrow and dark car boot so I can’t imagine how these people feel!

That is really scary.

I love this animation, thanks for posting

I actually really do hope that is what happened. There is no way they are going to find them and I can't think of anything worse than sitting waiting to die. Truly awful and so sad.

CinderRosie · 20/06/2023 11:46

This is truly horrendous, I'm horribly claustrophobic and never feel relaxed on an aeroplane so there's no way I'd go onto that tiny vessel for all the tea in China.

I'm still holding out for good news.

I do somewhat agree that the organisers of truly frivolous adventures, such as this, should have to sign something to state that they acknowledge public resources won't be used to rescue them if it all goes shit shaped.

In this Youtube video you see a tour of the sub, claustrophobia overdrive. Also very odd is why this supposedly high-tech, million dollar submarine is literally parked in a sketchy suburban backyard?! You just need to climb a fence to reach it. Not sure what they were filming there but a hangar, bunker or TV studio would make more sense.

Sharing this again as it’s lost in the post and was what I was trying to look for to see what the inside was actually like. Thanks @StrawberryWaterIce

This submersible takes passengers to The Titanic wreck. Climb in!

It can take five passengers to The Titanic on the ocean floor, you can pilot it with a gaming controller...and it has a toilet. Climb aboard Titan, a unique ...

Maybe my 19-year-olds were very coddled. I would have fought tooth and nail to prevent them from going into any situations even a fraction as dangerous as this one.

Really puts those "my 19yo son is off to Magaluf, how do I make sure he wears sunscreen every day?" Threads into prospective.

CinderRosie · 20/06/2023 11:53

Will it be unbearably hot on board in such a small space for so long, or as a PP said would the cold sea temps mean they'd all be freezing cold inside too?

CherryCokeFanatic · 20/06/2023 11:54

Any updates?

OMG I can barely breathe looking at that tiny space !

Yikesno · 20/06/2023 11:56

It would be so easy for the vessel to get caught in a loose fishing net as just one example of what could have happened. I doubt we'll ever find it, actually. I hope they have cyanide pills with them. No reason to suspect they do, but I think I would want one.

Justalittlebitweird · 20/06/2023 11:57

And there are 5 people in there ? It barely looks big enough for 2?? 😳

CosmosQueen · 20/06/2023 11:57

meditrina · 20/06/2023 01:05

If they are stuck at the bottom, I don't see how survival is possible.

But if they have managed to surface (and it's a comms fault that means they have been unable to signal their whereabouts) and they are seen within the 96 hours of oxygen supply, and a suitable vessel can be got to their location still within that window, then yes survival would be possible

As an aside, 96 hours is 4 days. There's no word on how much water they took down with them, but the effects of dehydration can be severe after about 3 days

There is no communication between the sub and the mother ship. They text initially until no signal then zilch.
There isn’t any way recovery or rescue can happen in those depths and certainly no means of rigging up something from within the sub.
It appears to be devoid of any safety measures or features whatsoever, i appreciate that at those depths it’s beyond the capabilities of anything built so far.
So effectively no communication or abilities to send an SOS.
How on earth was this company allowed to do this with just making participants sign a waiver?

The press is reporting that they'll be at risk of hypothermia (assuming they're still alive) because the ocean is so cold.

Have you seen the Apollo space capsules? They seem barely big enough for one. It's truly amazing, the bravery of astronauts.

Aircraft black boxes can work up to 20,000 feet. Couldn’t they have had one of those fitted?

Some people must have extreme mental strength I couldn’t cope with the claustrophobia

Itsadogone · 20/06/2023 12:04

Just watched the interview about it on GB news and it sounds like there isn’t a lot of chance of retrieving them. I had no idea they were as deep as 4km down and it could be in a trench. Such a sad situation, especially for the family members and for the young boy on board’s family 😔
