Missing Titanic submarine

1000 replies

Twinklesgolden · 19/06/2023 17:50

How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off.

The people on board must be terrified!

Sadly I think that the vessel has been crushed by the insanely high water pressure at nearly 4 km deep - approx 6000 pounds per square inch or equivalent to the weight of 13 elephants on the palm of your hand.

The most logical reason for the pinger not working is that this submersible has been crushed. Also it's worth noting that a submersible is tethered to the mothership and winched up and down whereas a submarine is autonomous and can go up and down on its own accord. This is a submersible.

Oh so why can't they winch it back up?!

willWillSmithsmith · 20/06/2023 08:52

You couldn’t pay me to go an excursion like that never mind forking out £250k! Despite this horrible incident there will still be people queuing up to pay god knows how much to go to Mars if Elon Musk fulfils his dream. I think sometimes that people with so much money just want to keep pushing the excitement barrier to an extreme level.

I really hope they can be rescued but I fear it is too big a job even if located. The Titanic should be left alone now.

meditrina · 20/06/2023 08:53

Yes - it has to to reach the surface unassisted (even when everything is going perfectly)

Posts last night said they had 7 systems for that

It's not tethered.

CrunchyCarrot · 20/06/2023 08:42

Yeah it's not like a regular submarine with a top hatch that can be opened.

Someone else was talking about how would a submarine be rescued but it's that hatch that makes it possible, another craft can attach to it and then the hatch is opened to allow people to get out, and be transported to the surface. But even that is only possible at shallower depths, not 2.4 miles down! So we have a submersible with people bolted into it, despite whatever failsafes are there, things can still go horribly wrong.

If you look up the Kursk submarine disaster, they mention: "Over four days, the Russian Navy repeatedly failed in its attempts to attach four different diving bells and submersibles to the escape hatch of the submarine." (wiki) That was also a horrific incident.

Horrific and totally unnecessary deaths.

The British navy was desperate to go and help, and the Russians wouldn't allow it. My dad was a marine engineer. My heart ached for those men and their families.

This is confusing has something happened to the cable?

BalanceMeHumours · 20/06/2023 08:54

Hmmm. One on board is a 19 year old lad. An adult, for sure, but someone still too young to really know what it is to accept the risk (and probably with a warped sense of risk and danger based on a priviledged upbringing that is likely to have protected him from some of life's knocks).

The 73 year old expert diver and sub expert? Sure, he knew what he was getting into (though I still feel desperately sorry for him, as I do for them all).

A 19 year old who has been an adult for a year? No bloody way he was able to fully comprehend what he was getting himself into. imo.

CrunchyCarrot · 20/06/2023 08:54

Oh so why can't they winch it back up?!

The submersible isn't tethered. So no chance of pulling it back.

In the Good Old Days, ridiculously wealthy people used to spend money for the benefit of their societies - libraries, schools, hospitals etc.

I wish they'd do that again.

Did the tether break or was it never tethered? If it was never tethered then it's a submarine?

Either way this has got to be so frightening I hope they locate the sub. Can they put sonar in the water to find it?

Igneococcus · 20/06/2023 08:56

I really don't know @rileynexttime it depends on so many things. If they released the weights it should come back up but we don't even know if they have. Tagging @SinnerBoy for this question.

CrunchyCarrot · 20/06/2023 08:58

Not sure whether it was tethered at the outset, but at some point released, or whether it has been untethered the whole journey. It's not a submarine, though. It's incapable of long submersion and cannot navigate independently (has to be directed by the ship above).

CrunchyCarrot · 20/06/2023 08:59

I think you have to bear in mind just how deep this is. It's 2.5 miles down the abyss, on the ocean floor. Why do you think it took so long for the Titanic's wreck to be discovered? I suppose you could think of it like the Death zone on Mt Everest.

YoSof · 20/06/2023 08:52

On previous trips, they have only taken one sandwich and a bottle of water on board each.

Not a nice thing to do but urine can be drunk.

Emotionalsupportviper · 20/06/2023 08:59

Peanutbutteryday · 20/06/2023 08:49

If they have released ballast and are gently floating to the surface, as opposed to being propelled, then it will take quite a while, but assuming the sub hasn't been damaged, they should survive.

I havent seen anything in the news about a ballast maybe enabling them to float to the top. Is this possible?! I do hope so. If they float to the top will they be able to breath without hatch being opened?

Apparently there is no hatch - I've just found this out from this thread myself.

Their prospects are horrible. The poor men.

CrunchyCarrot · 20/06/2023 09:01

Yes they may be floating upwards, of course the ocean's currents will make them drift but I presume someone with knowledge of these things could make some kind of prediction as to the most likely place the sub may be found.

Yeah, because no rich people give money to charity anymore, and also, it’s impossible to both give money to charity AND spend some on yourself too, isn’t it?

1dayatatime · 20/06/2023 09:03

From the BBC

Mike Reiss is a New York-based writer and producer, who has worked on the Simpsons, and took a trip on the Titan sub last year.
He told BBC Breakfast: "You sign a massive waiver that lists one way after another that you could die on the trip. They mention death three times on page one so it's never far from your mind."
"As I was getting onto the sub my thought was this could be the end.
"So nobody who's in this situation was caught off guard. You all know what you are getting into.

Sorry - there will be a hatch, but it can't be opened from inside

OooohAhhhh · 20/06/2023 09:03

This news is tremendously sad and it's making me feel anxious just thinking about what they are going through.
I don't agree with pp's saying the wealthy onboard should have to pay for the operation, that's extremely biased thinking. Perhaps if rich people wasn't on board then people would show more empathy.
Also we put our lives in the hands of technology everyday.
I hope it's a positive outcome and everyone is found safe and well within the limited time they have left for any chance of survival.

You can only do this once before urine becomes toxic.
Heard they need to be found before 11am UK time on Thursday before their oxygen runs out. Haven't stopped thinking about them and what they must be going through 😔

Feelingsickrightnow · 20/06/2023 09:04

@Skinnermarink oh really?
I thought and understood that they were dropped off by the mothership in the ocean above the wreck and had 8 days to make various dives, hence I couldn’t work out how they sleep or go toilet in there..
It makes sense now.

Technology has moved on a great deal since then so I hope they would be able to find the submarine much quicker.

Peanutbutteryday · 20/06/2023 09:06

The whole thing makes me feel sick and anxious to be honest. As bad as it sounds, I’m going to be avoiding opening the news (and this thread now) where possible for a few days. I will be thinking of them and praying they are found.

The 19 yr old was probably persuaded by his father. Who must now be consumed with guilt. Truly horrible.
