Portable air con or Dyson air blade or similar?

Summerdressinghelp · 18/06/2023 20:52

I don’t want to spend all the money, but if it gets really hot this summer, I don’t want the sleepless nights again! I’m already a little bit too hot to sleep. Considering a portable air con unit, or maybe a Dyson thingy or something else.

What do people recommend?

We have the Dyson one. It's OK but not really worth the money.

PinkPlantCase · 18/06/2023 21:00

I didn’t think the dyson ones actually cooled the air unless they changed very recently? I thought they were just very fancy fans.

We bought a portable A/C unit last year and it’s been great. We have young DC and being able to cool their room at night has been so useful. It’s very quick too. This week we’ve had it on for about 40 minutes if it’s been a hot evening and that’s been enough for the room to be a normal sleep temperature.

If anything I regret not buying one the year before last.

PinkPlantCase · 18/06/2023 21:01

And last summer when it was 30+ degrees at night me and DH slept in the kids room so that we could enjoy the cool too!

You can hire portable A/C units which is worth it if you just want to try them out first

Summerdressinghelp · 18/06/2023 21:31

Ok this is great! I feel sold on a portable a/c.

Do people mind me asking - what sort of price range? What makes them worth it? (£300+?)

Just bumping this in case anyone this morning has any particular price point or brand recommendations!

Which one did you get?

Wanttobemorechilliheeler · 19/06/2023 08:31

Portable air con definitely. We have one upstairs and one downstairs. Buy the most expensive one you can afford as the more you pay the quieter and more effective it will be. Mine also have options to turn it to auto so it will flick on and off to maintain the temp you set. Best purchases ever!

averythinline · 19/06/2023 08:36

I bought the cheapest one on the mumsnet list couple weeks ago from toolstation £289 … it’s big and heavy so only portable in the sense it’s not screwed on the wall!!!!although has castors so can move around…

it cools massively more than a fan… the main issue is the pipe out the window as we have casement windows that push out had to get a window kit to hold the pipe and that’s not as effective as a the rigid piece it came with..now it’s cooled down a bit going to investigate better solutions !

tempted to get a smaller one for upstairs once worked out window solution

tool station v efficient….

averythinline · 19/06/2023 08:38

@Wanttobemorechilliheeler which one did u get ? The big one is fine for downstairs as have to/radio on and it’s not too bad …but a bit quieter would be better for sleeping

Namechange202323 · 19/06/2023 08:45

We bought this one last week, it really does cool a big bedroom. AEG 6000

its heavy and needs a window outlet, but effective, the room is much cooler than using a fan. Can be controlled with phone app too!

I have a Dyson and its great at night during the heatwaves.

Air con will definitely get colder, but the energy demands they collective place on the grid plus how bad they are for the environment means they're a false economy.

I wanted to buy one of those a/c machines, but our windows are an awkward shape so don’t know how I would attach it .

I find I just have to shove the tube out the window and close the window on it as much as possible then close the curtain around it.

Not sure of the models now but I've got a whirlpool one and a penguino one. Both very good. Just check the noise levels, the size of the units and get the most suitable one you can. You won't regret the purchase!

MagentaRocks · 19/06/2023 09:43

I bought a cheap one last year, that you just put ice blocks and water in but it didn’t really make any difference. Last week I bought one from screw fix that was £330. The pipe goes out the window. It is amazing. I put it on a couple of hours before bed with the bedroom door shut and it is lovely and cool when I go to bed. If I am reading I keep it on for a bit but once I want to go to sleep I change it to the fan setting and it is still really cool. It is quite noisy and it changes depending on the temperature so it will go quieter for a bit and then noisier again when the temperature rises, which is why I put it on the fan setting for when I am sleeping.

We got a portable A/C (a Chilly I think) a couple of summers ago and it's amazing. It gets our room down from mid-late 20s to 18/19. I keep it on overnight as the noise doesn't bother me, and it will either just have the fan going or switch on the A/C if temp rises above a certain point. It was around £400 I think. They can use quite a bit of electricity though.

EmpressSoleil · 19/06/2023 10:46

I can confirm the AC units last a very long time. I have two. One is now 20 years old, the other 10 years old. So, while they are quite expensive, they do last. I did need to replace the hose on the older one as it split, but that was less than a tenner on Amazon. They are a bit loud, but it's "white noise" that you can learn to sleep through. They all should have a timer nowadays, both mine do. So I'll stick mine on for 2 hours when I go to bed and I fall asleep with it on. Very occassionally in a heat wave I'll wake up hot in the night and stick it on for another hour. I couldn't live without mine now.

strawthatbrokethecamelsback · 19/06/2023 11:00

We've just bought the Meaco Cool 1200, it was pricey at £450 I think, it really does the job but it's very loud! I'm right at the start of peri menopause and I'm finding it a nightmare to sleep so knew that we needed something.

Minimalist66 · 19/06/2023 11:05

We have a Delonghi Pinguino. Pricy & noisy but worth the £500 (gulp) we paid to be able to sleep better at night. I'm menopausal & have thyroid issues too so I struggle in the warmer weather

TedLassosBiscuits · 19/06/2023 08:31

Last years version of this, I think it was just under £500. It’s large and heavy and needs to have a pipe go out the window but I am confident that we’ll be able to wheel it out when needed for the next decade and it’ll work.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 19/06/2023 13:34

interesting thread, from what I can understand, an A/C unit has to go out the window? and is expensive to run? I have been too hot already so would love something. We have fans and open the windows on the north side until very late, but reluctant to keep any windows open because of insects. Keeping curtains closed on the south side helps a lot. I wish the roof had more overhang.

We got ours from b and q! No need to spend that much they work just as well as the proper built in ac in the conservatory.

amylou8 · 19/06/2023 13:51

My portable AC is great. I got it in the heatwave last year. I hang the hose out the window and it cools the room really quickly even with the window open a bit. I can't sleep with it on as the thermostat clunks in and out and disturbs me, but it only needs an hour really.
Make sure you buy an air conditioner not a cheaper air cooler, which is really just a fan in a box.
