Nice places to visit in Wales, budget!

The DC want to go to Wales. (They also want to go to Africa but I'm on a budget 🤣)

I would be driving, 4 - 5 hours I think, and possibly campibg unless I can find super cheap accommodation.

Me and 2 young DC. Quite outdoorsy, interested in history, love the beach. Would LOVE to see a waterfall. Where we live is very flat.

Can anyone make any suggestions?

Tenby has amazing beaches. Barry Island has a great beach. Cosmeston in Penarth is lovely with a medieval village to look round. There is the 4 waterfalls walk in the breacon beacons too.

St Davids Pembrokeshire, sea, coastal paths, hills, great places to eat and explore, a cathedral and loads of places to camp! A bit further north you have the standing stones, where the stone came from for stone henge. A beautiful part of the world.

The 4 waterfalls walk looks great! My children are pretty active but are only 6 and 7, and we have no hills here (fenland) so I wondr if they'd manage it ok.

DD1 and her boyfriend are currently staying at Porthclais Farm Campsite in St David's which is right by the coastal path. The pics she's sending through are stunning. Lots to see around that part of Wales.

There's a waterfall on the beach at Tresaith. That whole coastline is gorgeous. Llamgrannog, Poppit sands and New Quay are all my faves. Get googling West Wales.

Cardiff area has the museum of Welsh life at st fagans which is free to get in. Cardiff Centre has a castle, the bay, shopping at st David’s centre, Sophia gardens, boat trips. Loads to do.

Mid/north Wales, bit of a drive to beach but affordable and lovely area, we've been at least 7 or 8 times

The gower has some of the most beautiful beaches in Wales although that would probably push you to a 6ish hour drive.
Cardiff could be an idea, you could visit the castle, St fagans, Barry island, penarth beach and then if you really fancy a waterfall walk you could drive to Brecon for the day to Henrhyd falls (featured in Batman), the walk from the car park is probably about 30 mins or so, easily done with young children and they can paddle inthe water below the falls as well. Dan yr ogof caves are nearby the waterfall which is a nice half a day out with the kids as well.

I live in North East Wales Pistyll Rhaeadr is one of the 7 wonders of Wales (Waterfall). We have lots of lovely walking in the area - Llandegla One Planet Adventure has lots of woodland/reservoir walks. Or there is Offa's Dyke footpath, Clwydian Range - Moel Famau/Moel Arthur etc.
Lots of historical places to go near/in Wrexham - St Giles Church, Minera Lead Mines, Bersham Iron Works, Erddig House (National Trust), Chirk Castle, Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. There are beaches on the North Wales coast but I wouldn't recommend swimming in the sea, the better beaches are further West than us. Nice to walk down the coast path/go on the beach.
There's also a good interactive science centre in Wrexham called Xplore.
Bit futher West is Llandudno with quite a lot to do there.

To be honest the scenery is great everywhere. Even in the industrial heartlands of the South Wales valleys. There are castles everywhere and lots of historical sites are free. I live in South Wales and take the scenery and amazing beaches for granted which is why I am sometimes a bit “meh” when we visit other regions. I’m looking out on a lovely hillside view from my bedroom window as I’m typing this. If only it didn’t rain so much! (Not this year though as it’s been baking hot and dry for the last month.

The Gower. My first ever holiday place and returned every year as a child. Took my husband and kids recently too. I love it there

Have a look at the YHA website, - great variety of buildings to stay in, lots of outdoor space, games rooms, other children to play with.

Family rooms in peak season can be pricey at the coastal hostels but are often cheaper inland. Perhaps plan a trip over two or three hostels to take advantage of the cheapest nights? You can buy meals there and enjoy a glass of wine in the evening. Most also have self catering kitchens which saves an absolute fortune.

Overall feels like an adventure but much less bother than camping!

I'd recommend camping in or around St Davids. We stay in a campsite on Solva which is about a 5 minute drive away. Pembrokeshire is just spectacular.

My advice would be to check your proximity to a supermarket because a lot of places in Wales are quite a trek from one and its quite costly in the smaller local shops.

My daughter and I live in England but we have at least a weekend a year together in Aberystwyth, and intend to do so for the rest of our lives (unless we somehow get jobs there and manage to move there).

We think of it as the perfect place! Would definitely recommend it. There are cheap campsites nearby.

Eryri? plenty of history in llanberis with the quarries and free to roam. Plus theres a waterfall and a lake. Plenty of beaches around in you’re happy to drive.

Tenby is beautiful and lovely beaches. Also Newquay (wales!) is very pretty and has a family of dolphins at the harbour twice a day…and a very nice chip shop

The campsite at Whitesands has amazing views.
Don’t worry about your little Fenlanders. Mine is and he loves scrambling up the rocks and walking the coast path.

Tenby is beautiful, stunning beaches, one of my favourite places. Lots of castles all around wales. Could you break the trip up anbit and stay in a couple of places? Cardiff would be a good shout too as mentioned but it's be a shame to miss out on some of the less urban places

@MinnieMountain I'd like to think they'd be OK, I just worry as I'm on my own with them and want to enjoy it.
