How hot is your workplace this week and how are you coping?

Just wondering really. Mine is 28-29 degrees and I'm coming home feeling ill with it. Teacher - used to shitty working conditions, feel really sorry for the kids who are meant to be learning in it.

What's it like where you work?

30 degree classroom, the windows don’t open more than a couple of inches and 31 hot, sweaty, (farting!) children. It was unbearable yesterday.

I’m sure I read somewhere that there’s a maximum & a minimum temperature - if your workplace/ school exceeds either, you can legally refuse to work.

Unfortunately not

Like a god damn fridge, as always... And for once, I'm not complaining! I used to work somewhere that would be unbearably hot in the summer, and feel your pain. I remember us all googling legal working temperatures to try and scare our manager into sending us home. Never worked 😄

cocksstrideintheevening · 16/06/2023 08:11

Very very warm. I have a new job and the office is roasting, no ac at all. Old office I kept a duvet under my desk to wrap around my legs because the ac was so fierce, it was freezing all year round.

I think I prefer the hot.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 16/06/2023 08:37

I work in a kitchen cooking for children on residential trips away from home....its a nightmare at the moment.

UnravellingTheWorld · 16/06/2023 08:38

Mine is about 13 degrees - my boss thinks cold people work harder, so the air con is always on full blast.

My husband's work is in the 40s (he works on a farm and the buildings have metal roofs). He copes by drinking about 3L of water in the day and having an icy shower when he gets home

Ofcourseididthat · 16/06/2023 08:39

Feel so sorry for people working in kitchens 🥵

I am a teacher, and 36 weeks pregnant. I was bringing a fan in!

sashh · 16/06/2023 08:50

Those of you with fans, if you can open a window first thing point the fan at the open window to blow some of the hot air out.

Anyone working with machinery, check the user's manual, sometimes there is a max temp for operating safely.

It's bin day here, I've just handed over some cans of pop to the bin men.

Willmafrockfit · 16/06/2023 21:00

they are talking about bringing in air conditioning
not very keen on that tbh

Doyouthinktheyknow · 16/06/2023 21:04

Nurse here, work is a hothouse, horrible for patients and staff.

I have a little office with a window opening on to the patients garden so it has to stay closed for confidentiality. It’s not too bad in the morning, by the afternoon it’s like a sauna!

Thankfully I live fairly close to the sea and have been cooling off after work with a dip.

CoffeeWithCheese · 16/06/2023 21:07

We made too many requests in the past for the heating to be on during working hours and not the dead of night, so Estates left it on constantly and it’s still bloody on- so hotter than hell. Plus community visits to people’s warm houses and being in the car for lots of travel.

So fucking hot.

TheCyclingGorilla · 16/06/2023 21:17

On the platform, ,29° in the sun, as you would expect. Within the ticket hall it's much cooler and I spend peak times there so it's not too bad. Maybe 23-26°. The office has AC, so 19-20°C if desired. I'm lucky working on a sub-surface line, many colleagues on tunnel sections are boiling like frogs.

grayhairdontcare · 16/06/2023 21:21

I'm a chef. The kitchen temperature first thing has been 28 degrees. Once peak service hit on Thursday it was 47.6 .
Not the best day but you just plough through it

bluechameleon · 16/06/2023 21:22

Pretty hot, don't know an actual measurement. My office has one small window which only opens a crack, and I gave away my big fan to someone else in my greater need, so I only have a small fan which just cools my face down.

FlowersareEverything · 16/06/2023 21:23

I’m fortunate to have my own office, so I can have the individual air con unit set to whatever temperature I want. I’ve had it at 20 and that’s been perfect.

The fifteen minute walk to the station at the end of the day has been challenging though as I have lung issues and arthritis, which is in a flare. Thankfully I only have a five minute walk to home when I get off the train.

lljkk · 16/06/2023 21:24

it's nicely cool until about 4pm the sun swings around to hit the windows full blast & we are sweltering after half an hour until after 7:30pm (not that I work so late). Quite a big change suddenly.

musixa · 16/06/2023 21:26

The office at work is beautifully cool - I even felt chilly wearing a cardigan.

My home office is sweltering, so I've been working from the office all week

Curlygirl06 · 16/06/2023 21:37

Berlinlover · 16/06/2023 07:28

I work in a supermarket so it’s lovely and cool. We spend the winter months wrapped in layers because it’s so cold though.

My till is near the freezer section and the air con is on high at the moment obviously. I'm wearing my uniform including my jacket plus a t shirt underneath my shirt as I'm freezing! All the customers say how lovely and cool it is, not when you've been in there hours! It's not that long ago I was also wearing tights under my trousers and an extra jumper, but I tend to be a cold person anyway. I put gloves on last week!

Maxitaxi123 · 16/06/2023 21:46

I work in a lab d🤔so it’s temp controlled all year…perfect temp always 🙌

thecatsthecats · 16/06/2023 21:51

Too hot to work.

At least effectively. 21w pregnant, and glad I can wfh, because it's far easier to keep up a regime of constant hydration and peeing.

Barely breaking even with hydration if I don't.

bonfirebash · 16/06/2023 21:57

Thankfully WFH. I have a fan and my flat is usually a good 5c colder than outside in summer
Remember when I worked as a carer, we couldn't take our thick tunics off and I went to do a visit to someone who had not only a fire on, but their underfloor heating. Contemplated I might just melt onto the floor!

ShowOfHands · 16/06/2023 21:59

I work in an old school and the new block is new enough that we have air con and thankfully, my classroom is in there. However, today I had to cover for two colleagues and their rooms are in the original building and were either right next to the plant room or had full height dual aspect windows down the length of two walls or both. It was unbearably warm and the students were crotchety, hot, dehydrated and lethargic.

Bewilderedandhurt · 16/06/2023 22:11

Typically British, moan when it's hot moan when it's cold.
It's not that warm when you look at temperatures across the rest of Europe, let's not get too carried away, everyone else manages.
Drink plenty of water, take a fan into work if possible, seek shade.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 16/06/2023 22:12

I cannot wait til the weather changes. Another teacher here.

No aircon. Limiters on the windows that open 10cm on a tilt at the bottom, so let no air it. And constantly blow back closed in the slightest outside breeze.
The thermometer stuck on the outside of my windows read 45 degrees in the full sun for the last few days. And inside it's 30. Blinds need to be shut to stop the sun blazing in, which further prevents any air movement! 2 fans set up in optimal positions do little to cool the place, but a lot to add to the noise in the room - they are v noisy and need switching off at register and other quiet times or I can't hear the kids speaking!

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 16/06/2023 22:23

I just checked and Australia doesn't have a maximum legal working temperature either. Somehow I thought that with it getting so insanely hot there that there'd be legislation to protect workers.

This is one worker's right that the USA does better than us "Regardless of business size, the minimum temperature for indoor workplaces is 68 degrees Fahrenheit and the maximum is 76 degrees Fahrenheit." 76ËšF works out at just below 24.4ËšC which seems reasonable.
