How hot is your workplace this week and how are you coping?

Just wondering really. Mine is 28-29 degrees and I'm coming home feeling ill with it. Teacher - used to shitty working conditions, feel really sorry for the kids who are meant to be learning in it.

What's it like where you work?

We have air conditioning but my colleagues can't grasp the concept. I went into work the other day at 1pm and the air conditioning was off and 2 large fans were whizzing the hot air around the office! I soon remedied that.

Whinge · 16/06/2023 07:14

There's not enough shade outside and the classroom is too hot.

Same here. Inside or outside, we're all melting. 🥵

RabbitsRock · 16/06/2023 07:16

One of the managers said it was 98 degrees in his part of the store yesterday afternoon (not sure what that’d be in new money). Only that department has aircon, which is currently broken, but I don’t work there. I have a fan on my till which helps a bit, although after a while it’s just circulating hot air. Seriously considering changing jobs, especially as I reckon the hotter summers are here to stay. Last year was unbearable. And I know my customers are being sympathetic, which is lovely, but after you’ve had about a hundred people say “ It’s so hot in here” it’s difficult not to reply “ No shit Sherlock”!

Willmafrockfit · 16/06/2023 07:16

our manager is hot!
keeps coming in and asking what the temperature is, our windows dont open fully.
we have plenty of fans though,
26 degrees apprently - but there is nothing we can do about it

TiredandLate · 16/06/2023 07:20

I work in a glass and metal building with no aircon 😳send help. Thanks.

EmeraldFox · 16/06/2023 07:21

WeWereInParis · 15/06/2023 22:54

Bloody freezing. The air con is turned right up.

Hate too cold air con. Heating should heat to 18, air con cool to 26 in my opinion. People will be in seasonally appropriate clothing.

EmeraldFox · 16/06/2023 07:25

My workplace was 26 and comfortable yesterday. No air con.

Also a teacher. It's ridiculously warm. Behaviour is terrible - children are rude, attitude is terrible, they're not interested in learning, complaining about the hear (I don't blame them), irritating and irritated by each other and I was physically assaulted by a child earlier this week. I'm too uncomfortable to teach; the children are too uncomfortable to learn. There's not enough shade outside and the classroom is too hot.

So none of us are coping really!

Are you one of my colleagues? This is the exact description of my work right now!

All the kids are feral no actual learning is happening after about 10am and both staff and students are all too uncomfortable to be anything resembling productive.

Tarantella6 · 16/06/2023 07:26

The air con in our meeting room is broken although the control panel informs us it is 35° (not sure how accurate that is!) We are sitting very still and trying to be as quick as possible if we have to use the room.

The air con above my desk works, but the actual fan element doesn't. Turns out this is the perfect answer, air con on but not blowing directly on me, keeps it around 26° and it is all good.

MissingMoominMamma · 16/06/2023 07:27

I’m really lucky in that I support one child with SEN. We’ve done most of our learning outside, in the shade of the trees this last few weeks. It’s been lovely; all our work has been nature related, which has really interested her. We often take a friend too.

Go back into the classroom and it’s horrible!

Tadashi · 16/06/2023 07:27

I work in a school but in an office with a IT equipment which has to be kept cool, so I have an air conditioner in my room. The teachers keep coming in just to stand there. It's extremely hot in the classrooms.

Berlinlover · 16/06/2023 07:28

I work in a supermarket so it’s lovely and cool. We spend the winter months wrapped in layers because it’s so cold though.

Whinge · 16/06/2023 07:31

And it's only June. I'm not sure I can cope with several more weeks of this.

Fandabedodgy · 16/06/2023 07:31

About 22c. I've opened the windows and go for a walk at lunch.

RaininSummer · 16/06/2023 07:33

It's 29 to 30 in my office and the windows don't open so it's absolutely airless. Air con obviously doesn't work. We all feel terrible but there is no legal max apparently so we have to put up with it.

Honestly it's going to be such a long term and if this continues it will be a mostly pointless wasted 6 more weeks. The standard of work has already dropped off a cliff and I can't say I blame them. At certain points in the day my classroom is in full sun and approximately 70% cannot even see the whiteboard clearly let alone concentrate for a prolonged period of time to write anything of substance because they are so bloody warm.

From speaking to friends, I think it's the same everywhere! 😩

Willmafrockfit · 16/06/2023 07:35

the primary schools are visiting just outside where i work, sitting in the shade, having lessons, so there is that noise!
but it is better than the repetitive bounce of a baseball that happens sometimes

Willmafrockfit · 16/06/2023 07:36

it is due to be cooler next week

FlopsiesAngrySandwich · 16/06/2023 07:37

Just posting this in case it helps anyone.
In this weather I carry a handbag-sized chill bag filled with freezer blocks and ice packs. Depending on your work environment you can hold one/shove it down your top/stick it between your thighs and it makes the heat a bit more bearable. You don't get wet because any condensation evaporates so quickly.

jay55 · 16/06/2023 07:38

My flat is crazy hot, so I'm going in to the office extra days for the aircon which is total bliss.

missbunnyrabbit · 16/06/2023 07:38

Teacher here too, my children are feral and whiney. It is too hot to work. My classroom reached 30 degrees yesterday. I come home everyday feeling weak and headachey.

RabbitsRock · 16/06/2023 07:47

I’m sure I read somewhere that there’s a maximum & a minimum temperature - if your workplace/ school exceeds either, you can legally refuse to work.

There's no maximum temperature.

RampantIvy · 16/06/2023 07:51

Higher workplace temperatures

There is no maximum temperature for workplaces.

However, all workers are entitled to an environment where risks to their health and safety are properly controlled. Heat is classed as a hazard and comes with legal obligations like any other hazard.

Lifted from here

Is it too cold or hot to work?

In offices or similar environments, the temperature in workplaces must be reasonable.
