Uber eats keep taking money out of our bank account and bank won’t help

It’s £300 worth so far and another £32 has just been taken.
apparently it’s a subscription

I can’t find a way to contact Uber eats properly and our NatWest bank are unhelpful.

any idea what I can do?

Cc are usually very good at sorting things like this when you call so its not great they were so unhelpful. Sorry now I've read whole thing.ince happened my mam but Halifax sorted it and refunded straight away and cancelled card and issued a brand new one

It’s very frustrating
they did cancel the first card and re issue a new one and it is still happening on the new card.

we are drawing cash out instead of using our cards now, it’s made us really worried about money and our details being used.

You might want to get on to Katie Morley at the Telegraph if NatWest carry on being unhelpful. They have a strange habit of pulling their socks up once the press get involved - can’t imagine why.

and now you hijack my thread, because people will reply telling you how unhelpful you are and all the help I’m asking for will be lost.

are you saying people that are oldish, better with their arts than tech, disabled, shouldn’t try and keep up to date?

Years ago we had a bank (Lloyd's) who refused to help us with an obvious fraud. They kept telling us we must have forgotten we went to the Hounslow Odeon when we lived 200 miles away from Hounslow and hadn't been to any cinema for over a year. We closed the credit card and moved our bank account and have never banked with them again.

As others have said, report again to the fraud team and escalate your complaint if they won't help you. If you don't get immediate assistance you will need to close the credit card account completely and move to a new provider because a continuous credit card mandate is quite difficult to cancel and doesn't have the same protections that a direct debit has.

Do you use Apple Pay OP (or Android equivalent). When my card was lost and cancelled it automatically updated with my new card details on Apple Pay before I got the new card in the post. Was fully able to use it through Apple Pay before I physically had it. If someone’s had your card details and added them to their Apple Pay then it could be doing the same. I think you need to completely freeze the account and see if that helps.

I would move banks tomorrow. Your 300 quid down which is shit. But if there not going to resolve this then god knows how much it’s going to mount to. Close the accounts and move. Fight after.

No, I'm saying that anyone. Who is unable to keep on top of and understand how things work should not just blindly use things because they are there to use.

Particularly financial if you can't afford to end up in a position like this one.

Cancelling the credit card won't make a difference if there is a mandate. These are set up similar to direct debits so run in the background regardless of the physical card being replaced. Blocking the card won't stop these.

You need to go back to your card issuer and put a stop payment order for Uber.

Are the charges regular and the same amount?

Sounds like identity theft. Speak to the bank again, it's shocking they've not picked this up. Happened to me snd Barclays were fantastic.

If not getting any help speak to action fraud. You need this sorting asap as the fraud may escalate to larger amounts.

Apply for a new credit card with a different provider, then flat out end the credit card with Natwest because it sounds like they're refusing to investigate the fraud.

You should call their fraud team though and try to get them to investigate it.

With Natwest I think it's just the luck of who you get to speak to.
We had an unrecognised payment to a company none of us use a couple of years ago & found the first few operators we spoke to really unhelpful. I called back later & the operator was great & put us through to fraud who sorted out a refund.
Hope you get it sorted, it's so frustrating. It's probably worth completely closing the credit card.

My credit card on ebay is well out of date and everytime I buy in the website there is a message to update the details - however the transaction still goes through ok.

I did have an apple account I didn't realise and kept being charged for a subscription.

I had a similar issue earlier this year. Not UberEats though. I kept having money to Xbox bring paid. I don’t, and have never had an Xbox.

When I first called the bank, they cancelled the card and blocked it but it kept happening. I had nearly £800 taken out of my account.

After three new debit cards being sent out and the payments not stopping it turned out that my original card number had been stolen, used on Xbox and each time a new card number was issued it automatically updated so the fraudster could use it.

I spoke to several different people at the bank (Lloyds) but only one knew the above was a thing. I did get my money back in the end, but they were interested in knowing whether I had any DC at home who could have got hold of it. I don’t.

Could it be something like that OP? I recall the Lloyds person saying that a similar thing can happen to a card stored in Google and Apple Pay.

I had similar; my card was being used by someoen to pay Uber, about a dozen times in one night, several hundred pounds. The difference is I don't have an Uber account, so I knew from the outset it was fraudulent. My bank blocked Uber payments (not sure for how long, in case I ever want to use it?!), and then issued me a new card, which did automatically update on some platforms, but the Uber payments stopped. they then refunded me the money.

I don't know if someone was actually using an uber account and/or an uber car to travel anywhere - it seemed too often for that, so I suspect some kind of scam where the charge comes up as uber, but they actually somehow get cash back or are buying something else but the charge ends up saying uber.

the person I spoke to on the phone (fraud team) said a couple of people had had it happen to them that night, and it seemed to be becoming a bigger scam that was affecting more people so she was expecting lots more calls about it. These things seem to go in cycles, as scammers develop a new one.

I guess Uber is one that they think lots of people will have an account for, so it'll be less obvious that it's fraudulent, or harder to prove. But 10 times in a row is noticeable, as is £300, so they're not that clever about it!

Has anyone ever offered to pay when ordering a takeaway with friends? I wondered if someone else has stored the details and possibly hasn’t realised they’re ordering from your card still.

Contact Uber, I had this happen and they were able to tell me it wasn't linked to my account though not who it was for privacy reasons
The bank then refunded me because I said I'd tried Uber

Have you called your credit card fraud line? That's what I would do. Say you have never authorised the payments and they are fraudulent. They will investigate and if that is the case you will get your money back.

Cancelling cards and accounts won't do anything. As far as Uber Eats are concerned, you've agreed to pay them for whatever service they're taking money for until you tell them to stop, so they'll keep charging by whatever mechanism they can.

Can only suggest you contact UE. Live Chat often works the best with this sort of company and you can usually save transcripts of conversations you have with them. I'd start with asking what the money is for, eg dates and where the food was delivered to.

Someone's got your card details. Report it as fraud and the bank have to refund you it all. You can also report it to action fraud which is the police. If you're sure it's not your daughter or husband then it might be someone's got your card details (when you've paid in a bar for example or used a cash machine). You need to get it sorted because they could start using it for much higher amounts and the longer you leave it the less credible it is that it's not you.
