I didn’t get the job, did I.....

Strictly speaking I haven’t found out yet but I had an interview today where one of the women on the interviewing panel was doodling whilst I was talking. I don’t think it bodes well Confused

There were three people interviewing me and, whilst I was answering a question from another, this woman was staring down at her pad and doodling squares and cubes, over and over. We were all close together so everyone could see.

Am I chronically dull? Either way, am anticipating a “thanks but no thanks” soon... Blush

It might help her concentrate. Or maybe she was bored. Who knows?

thanksroyalmaill · 13/06/2023 19:58

I had an interview recently, thought it went badly, but I scored very highly and was offered the job. So sometimes you can’t really tell how an interview went

Fizzadora · 13/06/2023 20:00

Well either she had already decided you are the woman for the job or she was bloody rude and if you do get turned down I would tell them so.

PocketCall · 13/06/2023 20:01

Doodling helps me sit still and listen it could be the same for the interviewer.

MrsJaneyLloydFoxe · 13/06/2023 20:06

She didn’t really ask any questions either. I’m assuming she found me completely tedious!!

Perhaps she finds her job in general tedious? It's probably not about you. That's good advice in all areas of life!

PepsiMaxLime · 13/06/2023 20:14

Whether you get it or not OP I’d be feeding back about the interview and selection process

Mymouthisonfire · 13/06/2023 20:15

I once had an interview where the guy yawned and stared out the window! Could already tell he'd be a dickhead to work for.

I mean the traffic cones surrounding his new car in the fairly empty car park was a clue.

Turned down the job and explained why. 😊 absolute knobdickery

Yes this! They need to remain professional too....

AppleKatie · 13/06/2023 20:18

I wouldn’t worry about them not asking you many questions, they would have decided before you arrived who was asking what when.

sometimes stopping writing notes is a good sign they ‘have enough’ and don’t need to look for more reasons to hire you.

Gcsunnyside23 · 13/06/2023 20:22

She might be on the panel to make up the numbers so isht invested in your answers. I've been there and it was a longggg day, I was more to make sure it was done properly more than anything but the other 2 were the ones actually interviewing. I've also been to an interview where there was 2 sitting but only asking qs and listening to my answers so clearly the one making decision

MrsJaneyLloydFoxe · 13/06/2023 20:34

Well I will update the thread when I do find out... not feeling confident which is a shame as I’d LOVE the job

Sometimes someone is there just to listen to answers and then discuss with other interviewers afterwards that they heard the same. Don't be disheartened

ChittyBangabang · 13/06/2023 20:37

Unprofessional.

Your job as an interviewer is to create an environment where you get the best out of a candidate to make an informed decision.

Fuck helping them concentrate

HikerMum · 13/06/2023 20:38

I had an interview once where the interviewer stopped me mid flow and said hang on, I’m trying to write this down so I can score you. There were 3 of them on the interview panel who were so stoney faced I genuinely wondered if it was some sort of test. I was gobsmacked when they offered me the job as they acted like I was an irritation!

I had an interview last week. They asked me 4 questions and it was all over in 25 mins. I knew I didn't get the job

Until yesterday at midday when they called to offer me the job (I'm still in shock!)

Point is - you just never know!!

IloveRickyGervaisAndHisTeeth · 13/06/2023 20:39

She was really rude. I was once interviewed by a woman who repeatedly yawned whilst I was answering the questions. I asked her outright if I was boring her. I got the job, though.

FearMe · 13/06/2023 20:39

My kid is autistic and ADHD and doodles to help with concentration. Perhaps this applies.

Balloonmoons · 13/06/2023 20:40

It's hard to tell i think. I've had interviews in which the interviewers seem really disinterested and bored and have done well and been offered the job, and then others where I've felt it went okay and completely failed. It's a weird concept and process really isn't it. You don't know until you hear back, it'd put me off though I'd think cripes if the interviewers can't even be bothered to be here what hope is there.

Winterisalmostover · 13/06/2023 20:46

I had an interview for which I travelled about 150 miles. When I got there I was told that the person interviewing me had dropped dead the night before, so I went all the way home.

A few weeks later frantic phone calls. Where was I? Apparently I got the job and had been expected to start that day, except I hadn't had an interview or job offer and I had found a job the other end of the country.

LadyLolaRuben · 13/06/2023 20:47

If you don't get the job OP feedback is a two way street. So I'd give them constructive feedback on her behaviour. I'd say you found it distracting and unprofessional. She was not giving a good impression.

I know someone who went for a director post. During interview one of the panel members wasn't engaged. My friend stopped the interview, told the panel she was withdrawing her application as she clearly wasn't being given due consideration. The panel was mortified and that person behaved impeccably after that.

You give up a lot of time and effort to prepare for such events and deserve to be treated well. It would be interesting to see what the rest of her HR skills are like.

This is about her OP not you!

Im a NHS director and I hate to hear about poor HR, as recruiting the best is important and it starts with leaders setting a good example.

Oh my God! What did they say when you pointed that out?!

I've worked for some utter shitshows that I can see doing that, but to my knowledge never did anything quite that ridiculous.

They did manage to bypass all the normal hiring process to recruit someone under the radar somehow, who arrived at their first day to be told the company was closing and everyone was being made redundant though.

MrsJaneyLloydFoxe · 15/06/2023 12:50

update!
got a job offer!!!

MrsJaneyLloydFoxe · 15/06/2023 12:57

fingers crossed for you @Fraaahnces !!
