Do you have shutters? How much did they cost?

I'd really like shutters for our downstairs, but I have no idea if they're affordable or not! Just for downstairs so 3x 'normal' windows about a metre wide and half room height tall and one 'bay' window - we live in a new ish build in the NW.

So as the title says, do you have shutters? And if you do would you mind telling me how much they cost?

Following! I'd love to see photos, too, if possible.

Yes we have them! I don’t know the cost though so hopefully someone else comes along with more helpful advice. I do however remember me and DH were both pleasantly surprised that they were much cheaper than we were expecting.

I think they’re great.

curlywurlylover666 · 13/06/2023 18:16

I have them in the 4 front windows and absolutely love them. They were expensive though, £2400. I would say 2 of my windows are approx 160cm wide and 2 are 120cm wide.

I have a quote for some smaller windows and I think they are quoted at £800 but that includes 2 bathroom windows which are water/moisture resistant.

Well worth the investment and much easier to clean than my previous blinds were.

We bought ours from California Shutters where you measure and fit them yourself. Fitting is very easy.

We bought them for the windows at the front of the house and loved them so much that we ordered more for the rear windows. In total, for 12 shutters of various sizes, we paid £2200. I thought it was more than that but I’ve just checked the invoices.

I’ll try and get a photo tomorrow, I have some but the houses opposite are visible and it’s too outing.

wafflepumpkin · 13/06/2023 18:38

We paid £525 per window shutter and around £1,000 for the shutter on our French doors/peep windows

MadAboutCarbs · 13/06/2023 18:50

Those who have shutters, can I ask are they better than faux wood venetian blinds? Do they block much light from the room?

Mine worked out at approx £181 per shutter, and yours were approx £183 per shutter, so that's probably a good guide for the OP? Bay windows usually need 5-7 shutters, medium sized windows 2-4 and small windows 2.

AwkwardPaws27 · 13/06/2023 19:00

We had 5 normal + 1 bay done in 2020 by Totally Shutters (East London/Essex border) for £3k Inc fitting. Very pleased with them.

TheChosenTwo · 13/06/2023 19:00

We paid about £2,800 for our front room bay downstairs, we’ve done it in stages so now the whole house has them. It’s cost a lot but I love them, really bright and easy to clean, we did the front first, so upstairs and downstairs bays, then our back bedrooms and finally the loft bedrooms, did it over about 18 months. Took about a month between measuring up and installation. Going to see if I can find a photo to attach of the downstairs front ones, because I can’t be bothered getting up and walking in there 😂😂

Paddingtonthebear · 13/06/2023 19:08

2 bay windows (3 sided) plus a small bedroom window = £2170 inc fitting. They are the east fit type that you push to tilt and the top half is independent to the bottom half. So you can’t adjust the light. Waited 10 weeks for delivery and they are being fitted next week so can tell you more then!

Nw22 · 13/06/2023 19:10

We have on 2 bay windows and 3 normal windows. Cost about 3500

Teacoaster · 13/06/2023 19:15

Oh, good question. Mine are being installed on Monday. I ordered them at the beginning of April. MDF material and 10 year warranty. I have a large bay window, approx 3 meters across.

£1360, including measuring, made to size and fitting.

I can't show a photo yet but I went for full height plantation shutters. They also tilt open to allow light in and can swing out so you can clean the window.

I can't wait to get rid of the vertical blinds which have been up since we moved in last year.

Underthemagnificentbeechtree · 13/06/2023 19:17

We bought ours from Blinds Direct - I can’t remember the price exactly but they were around £300 - we had to measure & fit them ourselves - it was similar level to IKEA flat pack. I’m really pleased with them - we can have the window open behind them and one shutter with the louvres open to let the breeze in but the others closed so it’s pretty dark.

SwedishEdith · 13/06/2023 19:23

Oh, I thought this was about external shutters. I want them for the upstairs back windows but don't know if you need permission for them and how you deal with window openings.

StellaAndCrow · 13/06/2023 19:55

The ones you fit yourself, how are they attached to the outside wall?
Thank you!

Paddingtonthebear · 13/06/2023 20:04

I meant to say easy fit and you can tilt the top half independently to the bottom half, so you can adjust the light. Ours are not solid wood as they are much heavier and more prone to scratches etc.

Sounds exactly the same as us, they were probably all on the same shipment!

Mytholmroyd · 13/06/2023 20:26

We had some fitted in December - solid ones painted a special colour (close to F&B Cromarty). Two sets of 3-fold french windows and 5 x c.1m x 1m windows. Cost about 5k.

Very happy with them - they are sturdy, perfectly painted and fitted, and fasten with strong magnets so no need for handles/knobs.

They let more light in, depending on the size of the slats. Ours are wide slats so let more light in than our previous wooden venetian blinds. And tou can adjust the light coming in as our slats tilt in 2 halfs, so I can have the top half open and bottom closed etc.

As for cleaning they are much easier, a quick wipe with no string bits to get in between etc.

Paddingtonthebear · 13/06/2023 22:25

Do they block out more light than Venetians when closed?

AwkwardPaws27 · 14/06/2023 10:53

Paddingtonthebear · 13/06/2023 22:25

Do they block out more light than Venetians when closed?

Yes, the frame around the edge helps minimise light coming in round the sides compared to our previous venetians. I have wide slats so I think they let in just as much light overall when open.

They do let more light in than curtains, I'm not bothered by it but if you need total darkness for sleep then you might not want shutters.

Paddingtonthebear · 14/06/2023 15:12

Great thanks!

So much better. They do block the light and heat.

I had some
a couple of months ago in my bay window and they were £1000. A lot but I’ve wanted them for ages so used some left over money from buying my ex out of the house.
