What to wear to school “culture day” if you are white British?

My 14 year old DD attends a large state school in North London. It has a high proportion of pupils who are Asian and black. Last year for the cultural day the Asian girls wore saris and a lot of the black girls wore traditional Nigerian dress.

My DD is white and last year just went in jeans but is worrying about what to wear to this event on the last day of term. I have no idea what to suggest. We are not Irish or Scottish so can’t for eg wear a kilt.

I wish schools wouldn’t do this as it’s just a nightmare for some kids who don’t know what to wear. I know she is going to beg me to have the day off rather than have the worry of it all.

Any ideas as to what she could wear?

(Excuse the labels but ...) the late Romano-British, Saxons, Danes, Vikings, Mediaeval stuff, everything from Arthurian legend to Jorvik and King Alfred of all social classes - maybe she should go as an archaeologist. In jeans and a teeshirt of course Grin

Hey, not all of us are scruffs! Some of us even brush our hair…

Foxesandsquirrels · 12/06/2023 15:08

I'll get hate for this but my DD went in as a Vicky Pollard from little Britain 🙈 others came in wearing England football shirts etc.

A pretty summer dress.

Haha yes, channel Tony Robinson off Time Team!!

Thanks for that info, I'm off to get lost in a google rabbithole about ancient England while I should be working!

The historian Michael Wood does some excellent stuff which should be online. 'In Search of the Dark Ages' might be a good start.

And 'Digging For Britain' with Alice Roberts can be pretty good.

I thought we’d left all this behind in primary but nope this secondary school is constantly organising non school uniform day with different themes. It’s horrific. My heart actually sunk when DD mentioned it to me. I have a son at the same school but he’s not bothered and goes in jeans but my DD is a worrier and so this stresses her (and me!) out

Don't let it stress you out, follow your son's lead.

Sackcloth and ashes, probably

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 12/06/2023 15:11

If she has a pair of Doc Martens or those type of boots just send her as a punk in a pair of ripped jeans and a God save the Queen tshirt or whatever.

FancyFanny · 12/06/2023 15:11

An England football top, or local football team.
A union jack t-shirt,
A t-shirt with a picture/symbol from the Coronation
A local county emblem depending where you are from- eg. yorkshire rose etc.

This brings up a slightly off topic question that I always mean to ask. If ancient Scottish and Irish culture has definable imagery and associations, such as kilts and Celtic pagany stuff, what does ancient English have? Was there just no one around in the middley bit of the British Isles in ancient times??

I don't know the answer but I wonder too!

Inkypot · 12/06/2023 15:14

I like the idea someone put about 90s britpop style. Think converse style or canvas adidas shoes, slightly too long bootcut jeans, fitted logo tee, hair down, possibly a little eyeliner if feeling festive.
Easy, comfy and very very 90s britpop.
Bonus points if she takes a record bag as a school bag!

SallyWD · 12/06/2023 15:17

They're doing this at my daughter's school too. They gave guidance fir English/British kids:
Any England football, cricket or rugby shirt
Anything with the union jack or England flag on
Bowler hat or straw hat
Suit or dress
Tweed or pinstripe
Anything with red, white and blue.

They also sent this link for those who wish to really go to town: www.google.co.uk/search?pws=0&gl=us&q=british+culture+clothing&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj0j9jf573_AhXVGMAKHcWdCnsQ0pQJegQIDBAB&biw=952&bih=900&dpr=1&gfe_rd=mr&pli=1

Tattoos and a trout pout.

😅

EyelessArseFace · 12/06/2023 15:20

How about typical British seaside holiday-wear?

Shorts, flip-flops, sunglasses, woolly jumper, a kagoule and an umbrella...😂

canigetitmyself · 12/06/2023 15:21

Can she wear jeans and a music band t-shirt?

Positive41 · 12/06/2023 15:23

OP, your daughter is part Indian and part Irish. Why can't she wear something Irish/Indian? Its part of her identity.

Ohgooodgodwhathashappened · 12/06/2023 15:24

I'm half Indian/half english and would have despised this.

TwigTheWonderKid · 12/06/2023 15:29

She should wear whatever she wants, which will represent the freedom, openness and inclusiveness of our culture.

PoorlyDS · 12/06/2023 15:32

Band t shirt as we have a great tradition of
Music that is still relevant today

OttoGraph · 12/06/2023 15:32

jeans and a football shirt or rugby shirt

Honeychickpea · 12/06/2023 15:35

A crown.

Inkypot · 12/06/2023 15:35

I'm really surprised at the number of suggestions of football tops.
Never known that in a school? It's always "no football colours" or is that just cos where I'm from is a little a lot sectarian?

MagicBullet · 12/06/2023 15:40

Positive41 · 12/06/2023 15:23

OP, your daughter is part Indian and part Irish. Why can't she wear something Irish/Indian? Its part of her identity.

Very simply because this is a teen who doesn’t self identify/recognises herself as being Indian or Irish.

Your genetic heritage is NOT your cultural heritage (which what that day is about). If she is feeling british and ‘just’ British, then it’s ok.

Sensibletrousers · 12/06/2023 15:42

How about Rosie Riveter (WW2 poster girl for women working in munitions factories - my little old Nan made Spitfire fusiliers!).

She could look cute and a bit glam too (headscarf, bit of lippy, comfy boiler suit / blue shirt and trousers / dungarees)

What to wear to school “culture day” if you are white British?
GAWI · 12/06/2023 15:43

If other girls would be in pretty national dress, I would let her choose a nice sundress if that's her thing.
If not, go in what she's comfortable in. Jeans and a nice top. A band t-shirt is a good idea of there's something she likes.

I wouldn't do dress up or red white and blue either.

TheHandmaiden · 12/06/2023 15:43

Tbh I had this when a student. It was really embarrassing. The whole of students from the Asia Pacific rim wore prescribed national dress.

All the European students wore suits. Including me.
