What to wear to school “culture day” if you are white British?

Whatcanshe · 12/06/2023 13:34

My 14 year old DD attends a large state school in North London. It has a high proportion of pupils who are Asian and black. Last year for the cultural day the Asian girls wore saris and a lot of the black girls wore traditional Nigerian dress.

My DD is white and last year just went in jeans but is worrying about what to wear to this event on the last day of term. I have no idea what to suggest. We are not Irish or Scottish so can’t for eg wear a kilt.

I wish schools wouldn’t do this as it’s just a nightmare for some kids who don’t know what to wear. I know she is going to beg me to have the day off rather than have the worry of it all.

Any ideas as to what she could wear?

DD is 14 so doesn’t want to wear “dress up” clothes, she’s not in primary. As a teenager she doesn’t want the rest of her class to laugh or take the piss out of her which I think they would if she wore some of these suggestions….

Punk? Goth?

A really beautiful 1940's dress with her hair done in curlers?

Or yes, just an England football kit!

Dress as a punk.

This

This brings up a slightly off topic question that I always mean to ask. If ancient Scottish and Irish culture has definable imagery and associations, such as kilts and Celtic pagany stuff, what does ancient English have? Was there just no one around in the middley bit of the British Isles in ancient times??

I find it funny when British people say they 'have no culture'. I'm ethnically (or whatever) from the Caribbean. If I wore a Rasta hat with dreadlocks that would usually pass at events like these, so I am sure kids could wear anything from football kit, to dressing like a musician belonging to a British band, or even wear a top hat or Ascot-like fancy hat (and walk around talking like a toff if they wanted).

Britain is, and has always been, rich with culture. I don't see why people push against things like this due to perceived disadvantage.

MyBestFriendKenny · 12/06/2023 14:44

My son and his friend wore their scouts shirts and neckers on their last culture day at high school. They're both in year 8. Apparently a lot of the other kids, and staff, were very interested in their badges etc.

NotmyRLname · 12/06/2023 14:45

My kids say most of them and their classmates just ignore these days anyway and either wear their own clothes or school clothes..I’d send her in in school clothes or her fave outfit. A day off wouldn’t be an option

Welliehead · 12/06/2023 14:46

A mini skirt.

Chikasan · 12/06/2023 14:47

As you’re in London, what about her dressing as a Pearly Queen? Black dress with pearl buttons or similar either sewn on or glued on and a big hat with a feather?

WarmWinterSun · 12/06/2023 14:49

As someone who moved to the UK as an adult, the outfits that represent British culture to me would be: horsey/country attire, posh frocks with a hat (such as Ascot) or the ‘London look’ along the lines of Alexa Chung and Kate Moss’ style. She could put together a gorgeous festival look that celebrates freedom and individuality. Or wear a floral dress with Hunters and Wellies. This is all very personality dependent!

WarmWinterSun · 12/06/2023 14:50

I meant to say she could ‘wear a floral dress with Hunter Wellies and a Barbour’!

FrauleinElsaMars · 12/06/2023 14:51

A band t-shirt is a great idea 💡

A mini skirt.

Yes a Mary Quant inspired look could be good and quite cool (rather than embarrassing) as well!

BeginningToLookALotLike · 12/06/2023 14:52

Sam Ryder (beard optional) at Eurovision!

Last day of term? I'm with her for the day off...

Slightly different because in Wales we do have a national outfit that can be worn to express your culture...however my youngest daughter hates it. So on St David's day when Welsh children wear the national outfit she wears something red with a nod to being Welsh.

This year's choice was a red top with a stylised daffodil print and just ordinary jeans. It works fine for her because she hates dressing up but is clearly participating in the spirit of the day. Maybe you could find something similar for your daughter - a top with the London skyline or even something with a red rose print could work. Not OTT and something she might wear again.

Same, my little girl has grown out of wearing the traditional welsh dress for st David’s day and so wears a welsh football top now for it. The school are happy for kids to just wear something red, white or green, traditional dress, football/rugby stuff etc. can your dd wear a football shirt? Doesn’t have to be the most recent one if they’re too expensive? And she could wear it next time too. Doesn’t even have to be an England one, could be an English premier league team she supports.

What in the self hatred am I reading are you implying the old bs about British people having "no culture"?
On a serious note she could wear an old Victorian dress or medieval British dress there's loads of options. If shes scared to go to school and is begging not to go in for that day she's probably being bullied just something to consider

Perhaps the issue is that many countries and cultures have traditional dress or national costume. For English people, there isn't really anything that fits the bill.

mondaytosunday · 12/06/2023 15:01

Bowler hat and suit with a rolled up umbrella?
Pearly queen?
Beefeater?
Queen Victoria?
A knight with a George's Cross shield?

(Excuse the labels but ...) the late Romano-British, Saxons, Danes, Vikings, Mediaeval stuff, everything from Arthurian legend to Jorvik and King Alfred of all social classes - maybe she should go as an archaeologist. In jeans and a teeshirt of course Grin

OrchidsBlooming · 12/06/2023 15:04

We live abroad and our kids are at an international school, so we get this all the time. Based on them and their peers I'd say ...

Band Teeshirt and Jeans - usually an 80s vibe so more Spice Girls, Blur, Oasis than Beatles and Rolling Stones
Football Teeshirt and Jeans (you can spot a theme!)
Punk - a perennial favourite of DD now aged 15
Union Jack theme - DS almost 17 picked up a wearable flag cape at a sporting event which he stuffs in his bag and wears over a teeshirt and jeans
James Bond - black suit and shades all though this may not be your DD's thing or similarly Harry Potter characters.

Standout options I recall from their peers over the years
Boudica - which one girl wore a kind of cross between roman and viking with a kick ass sword!
The Queen - skirt suit and grey wig and a stuffed corgi
Ginger Spice with the full Union Jack costume and boots

Soontobe60 · 12/06/2023 15:04

Most of the suggestions people have made are actually just a type of fancy dress, mainly from a historical perspective. Students from other cultures are wearing clothes that they would wear today, maybe for special occasions, Holy days or just for ‘best’. They’re not wearing costumes from the past!
OP, if I were your DD, I’d probably wear something comfortable - jeans and t shirt, or a dressy outfit that I might wear to a wedding.

Thelastofbus · 12/06/2023 15:04

A British fabric eg tweed, broderie anglaise

In the style of a British designer eg Burberry, Vivienne Westwood

A band t-shirt of a British band

Iconic British style ‘moments’ eg land girl, one of The spice girls

Her favourite clothes.

Haha yes, channel Tony Robinson off Time Team!!

Thanks for that info, I'm off to get lost in a google rabbithole about ancient England while I should be working!
