Got a new high score on a mind-numbing game
Checked my emails
Made and drank a whole pot of tea.
Watched some pigeons fighting on the bird feeder

My dear mum, bless her, goes into 'transmit mode ' for a good hour every time I call. She's not really into conversation or asking what I've been up to so I just listen, react as required and get on with my stuff 😬

She's totally oblivious.

Anyone else have an elderly rellie who does this ? And if so what activities do you get up to?

My mum does this.
I play on my phone, watch TV with the subtitles on, see.
It's funny because as a young child I remember her mum ringing her and after about an hour she would call me or my sister to either set the oven timer off or ring the doorbell so she had an excuse to end the call. She used to moan about this weekly call. We didn't have a car so didn't visit often so it was just once a week. I have a weekly 'chat' call numerous 'how do I/can you just/please explain ' type calls (usually about tech issues and while I'm trying to work) and visit normally weekly. She doesn't see the irony at all....

You’ve just reminded me that my mum used to do this! “If I’m still talking in half an hour then come and tell me the dinners done,” or some such😂 now I’m the one listening to my mum blithering on about fuck knows what for an hour without the slightest hint of acknowledgement that I may want to speak too. I need to get my kids on the case like she used too!

🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️ yes, over here!

My mum phoned recently to tell me a long story about some shoes that she had been trying to buy, and they were on offer but her size was out of stock and then they came back in stock but the offer had ended, and so she phoned up the customer services number and (at this point I tuned out).... And the postman said..... So then I sent them back, and I had to call customer services again, and then I was refunded, but that took a week, and I still don't have any shoes! (Apart from the 20 pairs that I already own).

She finished the story and I was really unsure of how I was supposed to respond 😕

I have a friend like this. She's always been like this, so it's not down to getting older. I no longer speak to her on the phone, just message her. I used to be able to lie the phone down gently and go and make myself a cup of tea and she wouldn't even notice.
