Jacob Rees-Mogg - what's the deal?

He somehow seems to fly under the radar of the media. I would imagine there's enough material there to stoke huge outrage if his actions were more widely reported on, but they never seem to be. He seems to have some special protection despite being clearly a terrible person. What is going on there?

He is very religious and genuinely seems happily married according to interviews I have read.

added to which, his wife’s family and indeed his is very very wealthy

so the two big potential scandals… well, unlikely

Crayfishforyou · 11/06/2023 10:36

He has money, power and influence?

stbrandonsboat · 11/06/2023 10:37

What's he done? Being an awful person is one thing, but how does this translate into actual behaviour and wrongdoing?

lljkk · 11/06/2023 11:23

He's both publicly a very English eccentric (his entire persona is a deliberate affectation that he enthusiastically adopted) & privately fairly boring. Is why no scandal.

His wife seems nice. I imagine he's kind & devoted to her.

Personally I find his dismissive attitude of other views very unappealing. He has blinkered & dogmatic views, which he thinks is a sign of good character. The programme he did with Jess Phillips helped me understand that he can be charming & funny. Even his political opponents all say he's unfailingly polite on a personal level. Just too bad he went into politics.

LlynTegid · 11/06/2023 11:49

His late father was Times editor for many years.

KateJohns · 11/06/2023 11:55

He's not the only one.
There's lots of people in the media that are awful but have miraculous levels of protection somehow.

Jack Monroe - that cook that comes on This Morning - tried to use Grenfell to make herself the main character. Lied and begged money to her personal PayPal for several things, did none of those things. Has a Patreon account that she never sends rewards out for even though people have paid for them. She doxxed someone the other day to her 550k followers. FFS she let a kitten die in agony and tried to monetize videos of it suffering... Yet she still gets work, still gets protected, still seen as some saviour of the poor.

There's people out there that are paid to protect other people and keep the media quiet... Until there's more money to be made in their downfall... The it crashes down and they get exposed.

I’m sure there are some people who make it their life’s work to find skeletons in the cupboards of people like JRM. There is clearly quite an online presence of subtle propagandists on the left who do so. When despite digging relentlessly for some mud to throw they come up with nothing it might be reasonable to assume there is nothing to be found. JRM is very wealthy of course which must make this lack of scandal deeply frustrating for those with a leftist axe to grind.

ssd · 11/06/2023 12:00

I dont think you can compare jack monroe to Jacob rees mogg. No matter what she does, shes not and never will be that bad.

Hilarious that you think people who find JRM objectionable must have a ‘leftist axe to grind’. His voting record alone is quite grounds enough. And the reason he remains in his position is to a large extent explained by his semi-comic, performatively posh public image, just like Boris Johnson — mysteriously, a significant proportion of the UK public seem to have a forelock-tugging liking for an old-school ‘English Eccentric’ posh boy in power.

I definitely don’t agree with him on everything but he is devoutly religious and this guides his thinking in some things. I am profoundly anti hunting where he is not. Most people I know who are Conservative think he’s generally sound even if they too don’t always agree with him. The left seem very fond of a witch hunt and JRM is their favourite sort of prey. That they can’t find anything is a source of great joy to me. 😁

ScandiNoirNuit · 11/06/2023 12:22

I suspect he is extreme well connected and knows who to tap up to ensure he doesn’t get bad press. Having your father as previous Times editor can’t hurt with those connections.

No idea (or interest) in his private life, can well imagine it is fairly boring, but I’m surprised he doesn’t get more scutiny in his business dealings or even some of his dreadful views.

BunnyBettChetwynnd · 11/06/2023 12:38

I read the OP to mean JRM's statements and political stance rather than any sordid secret in the closet.

He seems to say the most provocative and unpleasant things and get away with it. Today he seems more concerned about backing Johnson and avoiding 'civil war' within the Tory party than about any of the issues making life hard for ordinary people right now.

Mogg's father wrote a book about how to create chaos and make money from the situation and this is how Mogg seems to lead his life. How he squares that with his religious beliefs is beyond me but he seems to do it.

He's the original 'big boy' who 'put me up to it'. He creates monsters and awful situation then runs away, reaps the rewards and nobody can put a finger on him. Even the people in his own village (just up the road from me) will say nothing about him. Feudal, entitled and a wrong un.

lljkk · 11/06/2023 12:53

A lot of Tories say provocative crap. Heck a lot of politicians say crazy stuff. I quite like Angela Raynor but I can see how things she said get misrepresented & some folk find her just as intolerable as I find JRM. JRM gets grief for his ridiculous accent & willingness to defend govt, he talks to journalists more than his colleagues (on average, esp. for a non-minister).

And not a good one.

The British love a toff. They especially love an eccentric toff.

Spot on. That's exactly it.

He's an unpleasant piece of work - have a look at the LedByDonkeys did about him

This is interesting to me. Do you think this is the reason for a lack of investigative reporting on him? His impeccable behaviour?

I believe he has publicly said he disapproves of terminations, even in the event of rape. Awful.

MammaTo · 11/06/2023 14:05

I detest the man and I cannot wait for his demise. Religious lunatic, brought up from a bizarre background with no empathy for humans.

I second this - it’s really eye opening, excellent video.

Notanevillandlord · 11/06/2023 16:07

I think JRM is not as stupid as BJ and knows how's to fly under the radar and toe the line.

I cannot stand the man however, I used to listen to Nick Ferrari on LBC on my commute to work and sometimes he'd have JRM on and he was very charming and quite funny with his anecdotes.

Ultimately, I detest his views and would like nothing better to see him gone. He brings nothing to politics.

lucysnowe2 · 11/06/2023 16:13

As I understand it... most newspapers have a folder of unsavoury stuff about most public figures but tend not to publish it until the right moment... when the audience will be most receptive and more likely to buy the paper/click on the story. So they may just be waiting for RM to do something sufficiently controversial.

And incest.

Vile man. Unfortunately, also my MP 😤

Just pipped to it, but: he said that an underage girl, raped and made pregnant by her father or brother would be wrong to have an abortion.

What more do you need to know about him?
