I am in hell with hayfever

I assume it's hayfever but it could be that combined with a summer cold. It feels hellish...I can hardly see with streaming sore eyes, sinuses are clogged and painful, ears hurt, headache, cheekbones hurt, sore throat and so so tired.
It's miserable. It's a beautiful evening and I am shut away in my bedroom. I want to be outside enjoying it.
I get hayfever every year but this is abnormally severe. I was like this around four weeks ago for two weeks, thinking it was a bad cold at the time, which makes me wonder if it's a cold on top of hayfever again?
What on earth can I do to ease it? I am taking fexofenadine daily and ibuprofen. Not sure what else I can do.
Help please

I had all those symptoms. Did a covid test ( just because I happened to have one in the house ).
I was shocked to find it was positive .

Houseplantmad · 10/06/2023 09:30

Went to the chemist with the same yesterday and he recommended a normal cold decongestant nasal spray but not for use for more than 7 days, otherwise it’ll have the reverse effect. He also gave stronger meds and an eye wash. Has helped a lot. He said to come back once the heatwave is over as pollen is so bad now and we’ll reassess.

Knackeredhamster · 10/06/2023 09:32

Agree it's a really bad year for it.
I'm going by the trees that surround my garden that I don't own and can't do anything about.

They're absolutely profuse with blooms, dropping so much shit, all over the place the last month.
Bits in my house, everywhere I've never known anything like it.
Apparently it's the course of the weather this year and from stress last year, so every bloody plant and tree has gone into super survival mode.

This is too late for this year but since I started taking my max prescription strength fexofenadine well before the season starts I suffer absolutely nothing!!! I read it somewhere and it's just not talked about enough. It completely changed my life.

Previously I started taking it at the first sign of symptoms and while it eased the symptoms somewhat I was still a severe sufferer. Little sleep, everything clogged up, daily hairwash and change of sheets and locked away for two months. I couldn't go out. I can't believe what a difference starting my meds in February had made.

yikesanotherbooboo · 10/06/2023 09:35

All the practical measures that @AwakeButTired said and avoid going outside if it is at all stormy or at least pre storm.
Medication wise use your steroid nasal spray daily and next year start it a week or two before the hay fever season. It needs to be used regularly and build up. If you haven't been taking it regularly now double the dose for a week to get on top of it. The eye drops are also better taken as a routine so get on with that.take the fexofenadine every morning .
As per pp you may have a summer cold as well, drink plenty .I sympathise, I had frightful hay fever until my 30s when I moved to a part of the country with very different flora and little irritation from car exhausts. It gave me a break and although I still have hay fever it doesn't restrict my life in the way that it previously did.

picturethispatsy · 10/06/2023 09:53

I second the use of an air purifier. Game changer. Get a good one, crank it up to full power and close all doors and windows.

And drying clothes inside and taking a shower at bedtime.

Your immune system is overreacting to pollen so maybe have a look into what you could do to support it. Also nettle tea, local honey and the supplement Quercetin and Vitamin C are great at reducing the histamine response.

Petalpup · 10/06/2023 10:00

I could have written the same thread this time last year (and most years) but this year I remembered to start taking medication (fexofenadine and beconase nose spray) early in feb/March time before the symptoms appeared and this year has been absolutely blissful with only slight symptoms. I’ve added in eye drops and had to have a couple of extra showers but honestly it’s made such a difference!
I know it’s no help now but put a reminder on your phone to start early next year and hopefully this will be the last time you feel so bad.

Try an acupressure band. £13 on Amazon.

Sorry, thought my post hasn't saved so I've duplicated.

Ideally the whole family would do the same… you need to keep pollen out of the house to give your body a break.

Shower before bed
Dry all clothes inside (especially bedding)
Outdoor clothes off at the front door - put into washing machine. Shower, then out on clean clothes
Sunglasses on at all times when outdoors
Vaseline in corners of eyes inside nose to trap pollen
Nasal rinse and eye wash in between medication
Rinse fringe (if you have one regularly
Put a sheet over your bed in the day and remove before sleeping
If windows are open in bedrooms, shut the curtains
Consider an air purifier that traps pollen
COLD drink for throat/ top of mouth to calm reactions

I also try eating onions and local honey, but don’t know how much this works.

Fexofenadine + Olopatadine work well for me, plus a nasal spray, but it helps to do other things.

It pains me to dry clothes indoors, but if they’re outside, then they're gathering pollen throughout the day.

The whole family needs to be onboard. I feel for you.

This.
You have to fight it on all fronts.
@AwakeButTired thanks for reminding me to get the air purifier out the wardrobe.

Im the same. Yesterday was the absolute worst so far. I struggled to drive as my eyes and skin felt itchy and the back to back sneezing was crazy. I've been using prescription fenofexodine tablets the last week which have been pretty crap. Then yesterday evening I purchased cromoglycate eyedrops and pirinase nasal spray and the almost instant relief they gave me was amazing.

Nasalhell · 09/06/2023 21:18

It's prescription fexofenadine maximum strength. I have tried beconase and found it ineffective. I've been on nasacort nasal spray which is a steroid prescribed spray and that also has been ineffective.
I've just had my head over a bowl of steam inhaling, hoping that eases my sinuses a little.
Going to sign off as struggling to read and type but will come back to this tomorrow.
Thanks everyone for all the suggestions, and sorry to anyone also suffering.

How long have you tried the nasal sprays for? Yo need to take beconase every day (probably twice a day in your case) for about two weeks before it really has any effect. For me it was a game changer as no tablet touched my hayfever. I now take Beconase (actually I use a non branded version which is cheaper but has the same active ingredient) for about nine months of the year and the occasional tablet to top it up on a bad day and most of the time it’s like not having hayfever.

Some have mentioned the injection, proceed with extreme caution, listen to this first. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001m4vq

I fiund fenwotsit didn't help this year

Chemist said to me that most of those need to build up but the OTC piriton helps right away. I have seen other threads where posters think the OTC one is the same as the one on the shelves, but it's a different thing completely.

I am so grateful to that chemist!

amusedbush · 10/06/2023 13:42

Yep, this year has been terrible for it already. In fact, I’ve been taking a daily antihistamine since February because I was sleeping like shit and I saw a post on here about earlier-than-normal hayfever symptoms.

I’m now on to a daily combination of antihistamines, nasal spray and eye drops, which has brought it down to a bearable level. I’m also thrilled to find that my new nasal spray (Benacort) works quite well and doesn’t cause the horrific smell inside my nose that others do!

Houseplantmad · 11/06/2023 17:06

@picturethispatsy which air purifier would you recommend please?

EllisBell1855 · 13/06/2023 18:20

I've suffered severely for years and tonight going for Kenalog privately. Hoping it does something to alleviate the misery.

I'm on prescription meds. Tried everything under the sun incl. expensive air purifiers. And I've had enough! It's unbearable.

dodobookends · 13/06/2023 19:16

I've had hay fever for years, I was taking 6 Piriton a day just to get through my O'levels, and used to have the desensitising injections but this year, apart from gritty eyes and the occasional sneeze, I have practically no symptoms at all.

I wonder what it is that's causing such rotten symptoms for so many of you. You have my every sympathy because I know how utterly dreadful it feels.

EllisBell1855 · 13/06/2023 22:49

I live surrounded by farms and there's a hell of a lot of hay making going on due to the good weather but it's been agony for years.

It's bloody awful!

Had my Kenalog tonight from a GP (partner in a NHS practice but also works privately). He said the NHS only withdrew prescribing the jab due to cost.

I'm waiting for it to kick in. He assures me it's a game changer!

Nasalhell · 20/06/2023 23:26

How much did the kenalog jab cost, @EllisBell1855 ?

OP posts:
GettingStuffed · 20/06/2023 23:28

Try eye drops/mist for your eyes. They're anti histamine and I went from being effectively blind to being able to see in minutes.

Unicorn2022 · 21/06/2023 02:19

This is the worst year I have ever had, I don't know why. My whole body feels so itchy and it's normally just my eyes. It's making me extremely miserable.

My husbands cost £47 I think, but it prob depends on the area you live in - I believe this was quite cheap!

violetscarlet · 21/06/2023 16:34

What's the hay fever season? Is there a month it stops? Thanks

Sistanotcista · 21/06/2023 16:45

Does anyone have scientific evidence that local homey works?

Sistanotcista · 21/06/2023 16:45

Ha! Honey, not homey!
