Thread 8 - TalkLair: “Brewing Russell's teapot”

Continuation of previous threads (thread 7).

The new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey; we have truly settled here. Outside, the garden is blooming with spring flowers. Inside, the hearth is glowing, pictures are up on the walls, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

Have they tried to trans Joe Orton and Kenneth Williams yet? They're both also dead and can't answer back. Actually, the thought of posthumously transing Orton is so absurd that I almost wish someone would.

duc748 · 06/07/2023 11:02

History is being re-written once again, then, it seems. So cynical, yet it sweeps up the bien pensants. Transing Orton would be hilarious!

When Crisp was writing there were already plenty of stories of what were then called transexual men, notably Jan Morris. If Crisp had wanted to call himself trans he'd have done so (he would probably have had an easier time - his style of maleness was very confronting in the 1970s). His whole life was about massively courageous speaking, acting, and demonstrating his own truth.

Telling lies in order to appropriate him is a shabby betrayal of a brave human being - but that is part of the genderist playbook.

Yes, just what I was going to say. In 1982 when I started my nurse training, I worked with a trans woman charge nurse, it was an established thing decades ago.

Duly forwarded to all the people I know who will appreciate it.

This afternoon I have mostly been defrosting my supposedly frost free fridge. I lead such an exciting life these days!

Anyway, I have now liberated the ice and wrestled it to the sink (along with the shelves). It’s possible I should have defrosted the fridge sooner. Much sooner:

The dog and the cat, oh my. If I didn't have a cat I'd have to rush out and steal one right now.

MavisMcMinty · 06/07/2023 21:57

It’s so lovely when cats and dogs get on well with each other. Dottie and the cats are only 4 months apart in age so they all grew up together, and Badger has never known anything different. The cats never had a mother, and are more like cat-dog hybrids in their behaviour.

@MavisMcMinty Squeee at your adorable cats and dogs!

Adorable beasties.

Unadorable ice - I need to empty my freezer so I can do the same, but it's slow work.

Both cats here are moulting and I'm using one of those wire brush things on them - rapidly accumulating enough fluff to knit another cat. They seem to enjoy it, but Oscar does a funny silent tooth chattering and swallowing thing when I'm raking through the hair near his tail. Different from the noisy castanet chattering Rosy does when she watches birds. I think it must be an echo of what he does when he's grooming himself. It's just as well they aren't swallowing the stuff I'm brushing off them, but I might give them a little hair ball remedy anyway, since I can't safely groom them underneath.

artant · 07/07/2023 11:07

Thankfully my freezer is actually frost free although that’s not without its problems: if it finds ice it gets rid of it which isn’t ideal if it finds it in, say, an ice cube tray! I fool it by using trays with lids but they’re bulky and there is never enough freezer space.

Tricyrtis2022 · 07/07/2023 11:29

How does the freezer identify and get rid of the ice, artant?

Britinme · 07/07/2023 12:17

My freezer is also frost-free and it never occurred to me to wonder why that doesn't seem to affect the ice cube trays! When I was staying with my son in the spring, I dealt with his supposedly frost-free fridge/freezer that was iced up and discovered a drain hole in the fridge was totally blocked, so it may be worth checking yours for that, @artant

artant · 07/07/2023 19:50

@Britinme the drain hole is fine (it does get blocked but that results in flooding rather than ice with this delightful fridge). It’s just old and more than a bit rubbish. Annoyingly it’s a size that is only really available as an integrated fridge. Ours is in a cupboard type space so integrated would be fine but the kitchen is too old to get a matching door. The solution, which will make an already shit 1980s’ kitchen look even worse, is to get a shiny white door to give it a vaguely fridge like look.

artant · 07/07/2023 19:52

@Tricyrtis2022 no idea. I just know that if I use an open I’ve tray (such as the ones that came with the freezer), they freeze as one would expect but the next time I go to get ice the cubes are a thin layer at the bottom. It’s very distressing when pouring a gin and tonic.

artant · 07/07/2023 19:53

ice tray, not I’ve tray!

MouseMinge · 07/07/2023 20:23

I love your beasties, Mavis! I've done a de-flea on my pair today and after my last cat, who had to be wrapped in a towel while she howled like I was murdering her, while I squeezed the treatment on her neck, it's such a relief to have a Django who doesn't even seem to know that I'm doing anything to him. Francis has always been fine with it. Being able to do the treatment with absolutely no drama makes me so happy.

MavisMcMinty · 07/07/2023 20:31

I have been so lucky that whenever I’ve had cats, dogs and horses, they’ve been the best cats, dogs and horses that ever lived. What are the chances?

MouseMinge · 07/07/2023 20:47

It's miraculous is what it is! I've had two of the best cats that ever walked this earth and wept more when one of them died than I did when my own mother died. I love the cats I've had since but my last beautiful girl, Georgiana, was the best thing ever and no matter how much I love the after cats, they're never as wonderful as she was.

MavisMcMinty · 07/07/2023 20:53

I cried every day for two years when my horse died. I thought I’d cry every day for the rest of my life but it did eventually ease, enough that I was able to cancel her Pet Plan insurance 2 years after she died. Probably wouldn’t have if they hadn’t nearly doubled the premiums (at her age they’d have only paid for euthanasia and “disposal” anyway).

weaseleyes · 07/07/2023 20:53

It's very touching that you think your cats (and other lovelies) are the best in the world. Of course, mine actually ARE the best in the world. This should be the only use of #nodebate

Arf!

CyanCrystalViolet · 07/07/2023 22:17

It’s lovely that you all have the best cats in the world. I’m incredibly lucky to have the best cat in the universe.
