Thread 8 - TalkLair: “Brewing Russell's teapot”

Continuation of previous threads (thread 7).

The new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey; we have truly settled here. Outside, the garden is blooming with spring flowers. Inside, the hearth is glowing, pictures are up on the walls, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

I am so loving the image of Mother Kuc innocently opening the fridge and being engulfed by a resurgent, engorged, and completely unexpected sea cucumber.

Grin That was pretty much how it went! Grin

I don't know what possessed my grandmother to cook sea cucumber soup. It was the first and last time.

I love roe/caviar! And I love oysters! In fact, there are very very few things I don't like and only one thing I'm never going to try again and that's sea urchin.

CyanCrystalViolet · 04/07/2023 10:27

I had proper caviar on a tasting plate once. I gave it a good go but, understandably, it was SO fishy and I couldn’t finish it, which was a bit embarrassing. I like those orange roe you get on sushi but apparently it’s not very ethical.

I once went camping with someone who brought tins of cod roe. They emptied them out, sliced them and fried them. It looked revolting. That is my cod roe story.

Britinme · 04/07/2023 10:28

I lurrve caviar. Unfortunately I have a cod roe budget.

SinnerBoy · 04/07/2023 10:31

I'm relieved that I haven't seen cod roe, or milt, for years!

CyanCrystalViolet · 04/07/2023 10:31

When I was growing up we ate a lot of sardines on toast, and the horror of gritty sardine roe spread across the bread.

MouseMinge · 04/07/2023 11:00

Chippy supper for me is always cod roe and chips. Lovely crunchy batter covering the roe ... heaven!

Tricyrtis2022 · 04/07/2023 11:04

So that's what it was, bleurgh!

MouseMinge · 04/07/2023 11:06

I now have a new lodged in the oesophagus thing. I take painkillers for arthritis. Took some last night that were tablet capsules and not the usual powder capsules that I get prescribed.

All good, went down. About two hours later one has moved back up and remains lodged for about an hour. What the actual fuck?!

MmePoppySeedDefage · 04/07/2023 13:29

How awful MouseMinge.

lucicle · 04/07/2023 14:05

Oh no, poor Mouse, that sounds horrid. I hope it eases soon. Sending your oesophagus 'behave yourself' vibes.

I absolutely love tinned cods roe and buy it off eBay as it is hard to find in the shops. A sandwich of fried slices of tinned cods roe on thickly buttered bread is the food of the gods. And I am one of those weirdos who is delighted when I find roe in tinned sardines or in prawns with the shells on.

Caviar is wonderful. My brother was working in Azerbaijan for a bit and used to bring bargain-priced caviar home now and again. It was lovely.

Currently watching tennis and wondered what the load noise was on number one court. It's rain. London appears to be having some sort of monsoon!

MavisMcMinty · 04/07/2023 14:41

Lots of rain here, which is fine with me, the garden needs it. And the rivers too - I’ve barely needed wellies for my dog walks this summer, and that’s with rivers to cross. For the first time in the 24 years I’ve lived here, we have a hosepipe ban. Even during the 3-month drought we had in 2018 the reservoirs were still 90% full. The south-west is SUPPOSED to be wet! We get all the weather off the Atlantic which then dries up as it moves east, that’s why it’s so lush and green down here.

artant · 04/07/2023 14:55

Raining here but not heavily. I took my mum to the chiropodist and it rained when we were in the car on the way but had stopped before we got there and didn’t start again until we got home. A definite win!

Tricyrtis2022 · 04/07/2023 16:03

Nice timing, artant, I like it when that happens.

Britinme · 04/07/2023 17:49

It's been pouring here for a couple of weeks - a friend of mine who lives further north in the state had roads washed out where he is. The rest of America seems to be labouring under a heatwave, but it's been the chilliest and wettest June in the almost twentyone years I've been here. Due to rain again later today as well.

MavisMcMinty · 04/07/2023 18:30

There’s a beautiful waterfall in the woods behind my house - entirely natural but looks as though regular steep stone steps have been carved by humans in the river. I’ll take a photo on the next sunny day. Tried to walk up the steps once but they’re just a bit too high for my short legs, and very slippery.

MavisMcMinty · 04/07/2023 18:35

One day I’m going to break my leg in those woods, and because they’re privately owned and I’m just about the only other person who ever walks there, I’d die before I was found. Doubt my dogs would be much help - actually I can imagine them refusing to “Go and see macman!” as they’d rather be in the woods with me. Perhaps we’d all die in there together.

Norwegians and Danes do that, they love it!

And I hope your oesophagus is behaving soonest, Mouse.

MouseMinge · 04/07/2023 19:37

The South Downs must be keeping the rain off of Shoreham and Worthing because it's dry here. I'm home with my boys and really looking forward to sleeping in my bed tonight.

artant · 04/07/2023 19:58

There’s been proper rain here for much of the afternoon including some properly heavy bouts. I hope the garden appreciates it.

Gonners · 04/07/2023 20:42

It's chucking it down here now, reminding me that I really need to get the gutters cleared and fixed. I think the noise from them is annoying the blackbirds on the lawn, who are on full worm-alert.

MavisMcMinty · 04/07/2023 20:51

After last winter’s week of settled snow, when the thaw began I heard a loud gushing noise coming from the (unoccupied) annexe and thought maybe a pipe had burst over there. As I made my way over there to gloomily investigate, I found it was actually the melted snow from the roof pouring down the gutters and drains, but as fast and noisy as a waterfall.

Good roof insulation on that building, and good gutters too!

CyanCrystalViolet · 04/07/2023 23:39

It’s suddenly pouring with rain here, at last!

I’ve been watching What Pauline is Not Telling You on All4. C’est très bonne.
