New words for old things

I've just been looking at swimwear and spotted the 'monokini' on quite a few sites, which is .... wait for it....a swimsuit.

I mean... why? Is it supposed to sound more glamorous?

Any other new, irritating words to describe something which has had a perfectly good name for a long time?

Jump rope used to be skipping

Shero. What's wrong with heroine?

Body bar = soap
That's so asthetic = I like your style
Not cool = uncool

foraging

I’ve seen people talking about foraging for blackberries. We just used to pick them. You might scrump an apple but never forage.

Ahh. Body bar is used by Dove because what they sell is not soap.

Maybe there is a difference I’m missing but I don’t understand why some people get so excited over ‘podcasts’ but not ‘radio programmes’. I can’t see that there’s any difference between them.

People sitting exams are no longer supervised lor watched; they are invigilated.

?? I did my exams in 1980s and it was invigilated back then too

Flats are now ‘apartments’
Large terraced houses are now ‘town houses’
Small terraced houses are now ‘cottages’
Bungalows are ‘single storey living’

"Buying" is now "sourcing"

"Putting a load of things together so they look nice" is now "curating"

"Painting an old thing" is now "upcycling"

"Second-hand" is now "pre-loved" or "vintage"

"Homemade and a bit wonky" is now "artisanal"

I've talked on here before about how I think a lot of it is very much linked to social class. I got absolutely flamed for saying it but I stand firm. Middle-class people use these ridiculous words to try and distinguish what they do from what working-class people have done (have had to do) more centuries.

I absolutely 💯 agree 👍

I’ve seen ‘female hero’, even worse.

A wireless now being called a transistor radio.

Emmerdale farm now just Emmerdale, what’s next Coronation street just Coronation?

Am I missing something here?

We had transistor radios in the 1970s. My parents called it a wireless.

I hate "female X" in general - I was looking for something to watch and a programme was described as "Two female detectives blah blah". You never get "Two male detectives blah blah". Even in 2023, males are still treated as the default humans.

'Price point' instead of 'price'

Vegetarian - 'plant based'

I hate train station. I blame Kirstie Alsopp. It's a bloody railway station.

newtb · 09/06/2023 21:28

Aah forgot. Monokini used to be just the bikini bottoms for people that were going to ressorts like St Tropez.

The absurd elevation of job titles which makes it impossible to discern the nature of very simple roles.

Sanitation manager - toilet cleaner
Executive PA - secretary
Horticultural landscaper - gardener
Loss prevention officer - security guard
Waste removal engineer - binman
Customer experience executive - call centre staff

Etc

Rodent executive - rat catcher

Vegetarian - 'plant based'

No, plant based is vegan. Vegetarians eat eggs and dairy which are not plant based.

The reason for plant based being a term is that some people get very funny about vegans and find they have to make comments. Also, plant based diet refers to food as opposed to a vegan lifestyle over all.

There isn’t. I listen to podcasts from BBC sounds. Some of them are also radio programs.

Vegetarian - 'plant based'

I don't understand why "plant based" is used as the equivalent to vegetarian . If it's just based on plants it could contain other things too.

LulooLemon · 09/06/2023 22:15

'Vegan-friendly'

The manufacturer doesn't want to just write 'vegan' on the packaging in case it puts off non-vegans.

The problem is it does. There was much huffing and puffing from some people that crumpets were marked as vegan. The fact that they had always been vegan didn’t seem to matter.
