What was the best wedding gift you received?

A friend of mine is getting married in a few weeks so looking for gift ideas.
They don't have a gift registry and they've been together for years so already have things they need for a house etc!
Would rather give a gift as opposed to money.

So, what was the best thing you received for your wedding day?

Our woodburner gave up about two weeks before we got married. The new one was £1000s. My mum paid. So very grateful
My very close second favourite is a Camelia bush (£10 from Tesco as they left the label on) but it was so thoughtful, from wonderful friends and blooms beautifully and will do, hopefully, for years!

A tool kit 30 years ago which we still use.

A hand carved wooden fruit bowl is still in constant use.

Some nice glasses get used every time we have guests.

A set of hardback books which the giver knew we would both love, still read sometimes and very much cherished.

We bought a doer-up of a house so some presents related to that. A Black & Decker bench was really useful, as was the handmade voucher saying I will make all your curtains once you know what you want.

A holiday in a family friend's luxury holiday home was our best gift.

A prepaid honeymoon meal - the guest gave us a menu card with a picture of our restaurant table with amazing view, and the pre-ordered menu and wine. It was in Italy (guest was Italian and knew the restaurant) and was the highlight of our honeymoon, we were treated like royalty!

FirstTimeBoyMum21 · 12/06/2023 13:09

I would suggest a date night voucher for after honeymoon when they’re maybe a bit more skint 🤣 or else a voucher for an activity like a food tour.

A voucher for a nice restaurant that we used for our 1st anniversary meal.

A huge china bowl which I use for fruit or large salads or just to look pretty.

Lcb123 · 12/06/2023 13:39

Honestly - the best thing was most guests making a contribution to our honeymoon fund. We were about to move house so was grateful to not receive any items. What about some currency for honeymoon destination?

DM1720 · 12/06/2023 15:10

Money for sure. We did get a few gifts but much preferred the money. Maybe you could do a little token gift and give the money too!

A champagne afternoon tea, some beautiful cookies and cash - plus a cute ceramic keepsake!

Only wedding gift I still have (that I can remember) is a simple Wooden tray with handles that my friend got me. Didn’t have a list as such, so it was just a nice surprise.

Also still have ex MIL’s breadboard which she got as a wedding gift in approx 1946!!

prettybird · 12/06/2023 15:57

We tried not to have a list - although I ended up doing a basic one to give some guidance (including things we didn't want, like carriage clocks or cut crystal glasses) and saying that we genuinely didn't need anything. It was only given to people who explicitly asked for it.

Dh also did a wine list wish list as a bit of fun (everyone who knows him knows he's a wine fanatic WineGrin).

As it happens, two of our favourite presents ended up being a pewter Rennie Mackintosh inspired carriage clock from my work Shock (it was the brass ones I didn't like and I'd mentioned it as my best friend ended up getting 3 at her wedding Shock) and some cut crystal whisky glasses from my brother's ex's parents Shock

Our favourite present, which we weren't sure about at the time, was a big wicker picnic basket. We still use it every time we have a barbecue to take stuff out to the patio.

3 of my siblings clubbed together and got us 'A year of dates' which we really loved.

Each month they presented us with a note and a gift voucher for various (mostly local) restaurants/cafes/cinema/activities/events etc so we could have a proper night out once a month.

We loved this and really looked forward to it each month. No time limits on when we could fit them in either so we could go out at our own leisure but it felt like a real treat and forced us to make an effort to go out.

This was before we had DC but we have done the same sort of idea for family who do have DC, just include the offer to babysit for the evening too!

It helped spread the cost for the gift giver too as they each bought a voucher on rotation every 3 months.
Eg. Sister 1 bought Jan/April/July/Oct
Sister 2 bought Feb/May/Aug/Nov
Brother bought in March/June/Sept/Dec

Lifetime membership to national trust - didn’t fully appreciate it at the time but as years have gone on (esp with kids) it’s been amazing
