How do you get rid of those skinny spiders?

I have a few in my house at the moment. I don't mind them whilst they are small. Dc don't like them though. I've removed a few in a bit of tissue and then blow them into the garden but just wondering if there is a better way. Especially for the bigger ones that I don't really like touching!

Are these spindly spiders/cellar spiders what I would call daddy long lengs? The ones with, well, long legs?

ivfbabymomma1 · 15/06/2023 07:32

Can you buy seller spiders?? Asking for ...well me!!!! I hate spiders and I didn't know this gem of information!!!!

IHeartGeneHunt · 15/06/2023 07:36

I keep them too! They've all got names and I'm not even frightened of them. Frank lives in the bathroom. Betty is in the living room, René and Michelle of the Resistance live in the kitchen and Madame Fanny is the bedroom spider.
Frank gets stuck in the bath so I make him a little tissue paper rope. He knows what it is now and comes straight over to me to climb up when he sees it.

Thats the ones. We call them ghost spiders in our house. I absolutely hate them and they freak me out but I’m trying to leave them alone this year to see if we have less house spiders.

Cakeorchocolate · 15/06/2023 07:54

I never knew their name or that they kill the bigger spiders.
I mostly leave them be if they're not near the head of my bed or just a bit too giant to leave hanging around. But will definitely try to leave them now. All other spiders get evicted.

A glass, or other suitable container (I have an old iron filling plastic container that serves this purpose pretty well upstairs and a gu dessert glass pot downstairs - I prefer something see through to confirm it's in there without opening to check) and a piece of paper, well something a little more rigid, like card or an envelope. Thin enough to slide under the glass/spider but strong enough not to bend and leave gaps when you pick it up.

Pop the glass or other container over the spider, slide the paper under both and pick up carefully. Pop the spider out of a window, door or far away at the end of the garden etc.

Awwww that is so sweet! (I can't believe I just said that). Seriously, soooo cute! 😂

IHeartGeneHunt · 15/06/2023 09:23

@CrunchyCarrot it really is! And when he's out he walks up the grouting between the tiles with his little feet one in front of the other like a tightrope. Bloody adorable little hideous arachnid.

The cellar spiders also attack each other and keep their own population under control.

I have a population in the toilet in the garage and they seem to get along just fine. They all seem to find a height on the wall and more or less stick to that. This morning, there were four in a little group, almost touching.

They seem to be of all different ages and sizes, probably 3 generations of them so far, this year.

mogtheexcellent · 15/06/2023 09:51

I once saw a cellar spider with a load of babies on her back hunt down and kill a massive 5 cm hairy fucker.

There was a thread a few years ago where the op called them leggy babes so thats what they are in our house. If they are moving around in dds room i just relocate them to my room. She was fine with spiders until she made friends with a girl that screamed in terror at them Hmm

Like a pp i give them sitcom names. Hyacinth bouquet lives above the tv.

Savanna1990 · 15/06/2023 10:10

I absolutely hate spiders but these ones have become my friends knowing they kill the big ones. I leave them alone now.

Baldieheid · 15/06/2023 11:09

I'm a spider phone but I could live with these guys. Sadly all we get are the massive hairy bastards. I've never seen a skinny here so perhaps we're too far north in Central Scotland?

LookingGlassMilk · 15/06/2023 11:25

I keep the cellar spiders but I still get a few giant house spiders every summer. I've only ever seen them eat a house spider once, and it was a small one. Surely the big house spiders just know to stay out of the cellar spider's corner?

rickandmorts · 06/06/2023 23:31

Am I the only person who has an infestation of cellar spiders? They appear in every corner of every room if I let them. And cupboards. I hate them, find them really creepy. I've literally just looked up and there's one above me 😭😭

I have an infestation too. I'm in a small damp flat and there are soooo many of them. We don't have house spiders or anything bigger so I am afraid I do not let them stay!! Horrible skinny blob body things creep me out.

Hairbrushhandle · 15/06/2023 21:11

I have a lot in my house but very very rarely have big scuttly ones as a result. It's the scuttle nature of spiders I cannot stand, when you catch it out the corner of your eye. The cellar ones just walk v slowly and sometimes dangle a bit. I can handle that.

Crinkle77 · 15/06/2023 21:12

Hyppogriff · 06/06/2023 20:07

Don’t get rid of them - the cellar spiders get the big house spiders !!

Yep, that's why I'm letting them stay in my bedroom cos I'm scared of them big mother fuckers that cone in Autumn. But I don't mind the cellar spiders cos they just sign in their webs minding their own business.

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 15/06/2023 22:13

I have cellar spiders all over my flat. I also have 2 false widows. I have never seen any house spiders so spindlies must be doing their job and any flies don't last long in my kitchen because the widow has its Web across the 3 foot sash window and it is currently fat and glossy and there are fly carcasses underneath.

Furries · 16/06/2023 02:48

Another fan of cellar spiders here. I really hate spiders, but I have made my peace with these guys in my house. Great for dealing with house spiders, plus many other bugs.

If you live in a timber-framed property, they are definitely an asset - they stop a lot of the critters that could do serious damage to the structure of your house.

Crinkle77 · 21/06/2023 19:57

This is why I let the cellar spiders stay. It caught this horrible fucker in its web the other day 😂

How do you get rid of those skinny spiders?
Wobblysausage · 21/06/2023 20:16

I once found one of them massive hairy house spiders wrapped in a web and I thought Jesus what sort of beast has eaten that! I was thinking I had a tarantula down the side of my washing machine but it turned out to be one them skinny leg spiders so now I leave them be. They keep themselves to themselves and I’d much rather deal with them than the big mutant ones that run across the floor!

WhispersOfWickedness · 26/06/2023 09:08

Well, a return to this thread has convinced me that should i ever move to Scotland, I'm rounding up my brood of cellar spiders and taking them with me Grin

BlackeyedSusan · 26/06/2023 09:32

BobBobBobbing · 06/06/2023 20:09

Skinny legs stay in my house to eat the big hairy feckers, which they do with amazing efficiency. I am not a spider fan, but would never evict the skinny ones.

This.

CrunchyCarrot · 12/07/2023 07:01

One of my skinny spiders has just had children, there are about 40 or so in a web, they are all tiny! Mum is watching over them.

PretendUsername · 12/07/2023 07:07

Our house is full of cellar spiders there's one in every room in the corner of the ceilings. But I never see any carcasses of the big fat spiders they supposedly eat. It's true that since adopting them from our garage conversion there has been considerably less sightings of the bigger fat ones but where do the bodies go? I'm sure they must be eating them but you'd think I'd see some evidence. They also don't appear to make any webs, just the odd whispy but here and there so how do they catch them? I've googled cellar spider and they look very similar although they don't get that big most of the time.

Eaumyword · 12/07/2023 08:17

I can also confirm that the spindlies are absolutely bloody fantastic!
I have a severe spider phobia but since leaving the spindlies to do their work, the massive hairy mofo's have definitely reduced.
I give them names too like Harry and Harriet and Children of Harriet.

ChippyTea16 · 12/07/2023 08:33

This is fascinating and very glad to have it confirmed that cellar spiders keep the fat ones away. I have a few in my new house but generally leave them alone as they tend to stay in the same place but how does it work with dusting/cleaning? I always thought to reduce the chance of having any spiders you should keep corners clear of clutter and stuff but now I want to keep them there so do I just… not dust??
