To think this is an unreasonable level of noise

In my house (terraced), double glazed windows closed, earplugs in and I can still hear next door neighbours child and them talking, they ares in the kitchen - their windows are open.

I just think especially since I have ear plugs in that if I am still hearing you then your being unreasonably loud.

They are talking in their kitchen. That’s perfectly reasonable. You need to live in the middle of nowhere if normal living noises are an issue for you.

TheYear2000 · 05/06/2023 17:55

I agree it shows not good soundproofing between the houses but you can't expect neighbours to keep windows shut or not have conversations in their kitchen in the middle of the day. Have you tried having white noise on or background radio to cover neighbours (reasonable) sounds if they irritate you?

Spectre8 · 05/06/2023 17:58

No the sound proofing is shocking I know. I am not expecting them to have to close their windows and not talk but they are being exceptionally loud. Because when I was talking to the lady yesterday she was not talking at the volume she is right now.

And I except some noise to bleed through but if I can hear your conversation word for word like you are literally in my room ...

Ours seem to conduct everything at shouting level. I don't mind the kids, although frankly they could go to bed before 11, but the adults are arseholes. Scary arseholes at that. Today's delight was a pissy nappy that landed on my drying rack outside. I threw it back. I know it's emergency housing from out of our Borough from the previous tenant, who was lovely, but I'm going to end up reporting them if it carries on.

murasaki · 05/06/2023 18:03

We're also a thin walled victorian terrace, never hear anything from nice neighbour on the other side.

LobeliaSackville · 05/06/2023 18:05

You can install a decibel meter app on your phone and find out for sure if they are loud or not.

murasaki · 05/06/2023 18:06

@Spectre8 I hear you, pun intended! I know their kids' names, that she is cross about not having a car or a job, and I've not met them. The conversations might as well have been happening in my living room!

murasaki · 05/06/2023 18:06

@LobeliaSackville thanks, will do that.

Spectre8 · 05/06/2023 18:06

All the previous owners who lived there I never heard them at all, but these ones. Honestly I just want to read a book not here how your child ate homemade chicken nuggets. earlier she was on speakerphone to her mum and i could hear word for word what her mum was saying.

I'm making my dinner, radio on and I had to listen to how they are going to to next to buy some new baby clothes. Might aswell just move in with them at this point since I hear everything about their lives and its the same in winter even when their windows are shut

haha. Exactly! They seem to have a routine now which around this time until kids bedtime they are this loud so think I'll just leave my house for a few hours go for a walk instead.

I live next door to a family and I can near the dad a lot, nobody else. He has a voice like a fog horn, amplified x10 if he’s on the phone Dom Joly style. I don’t hear her or the kids so I know it’s not the walls which are the issue. He just bellows all the time. I know all about his testicles. 🙈

Spectre8 · 05/06/2023 18:15

@QuintanaRoo that is disgusting lol

I guess some people just don't care about their privacy at all.

@Spectre8 a walk sounds good. Not so much at half ten when I fancy going to bed because unlike them I do actually have a job. I am not religious but am equally opportunity praying they move on soon.

Yeah - jsut need to vent I guess cos sometimes it like I shouldn't have to do all these things. I can only do what I can control so I'll just jig things around and do things at different times.

They also love 7am speakerphone conversations in the garden!

Sometimes a vent, typed rather than fog horned through a wall, is what's needed!

This! Ah time is up so some normal noise level has started...lucky I am in the office next few days so time I get back the kids will be in bed.

I dont have kids but sometimes I want to borrow my nephews 😂

I'm tempted.to spend more days in the office, given the daytime noise, I'm getting repetitive strain from jumping on the mute button on teams. And these nightmares don't go to bed until 11 pm and I'm not spending that long in the office...

That pretty bad at 11pm.

This morning I was doing my business in the bathroom and they were discussing breakfast options, sometimes I feel like shouting back I'll have some porridge thanks. I'll pop over in 5 mins 😂

The pissy nappy did tip me over the edge today though. I had to call dp at work to check i wasn't being crazy by chucking it jack over the 6 foot fence as I list all sense of reason . It's not come back, but who.does that?????

That is disgusting and you're not crazy for chucking it back. Let's hope your neighbours move soon too so you get some good ones

If it’s an option to invest in soundproofing I would recommend. We did it in our old house - 50s semi with what felt like zero soundproofing and it was a game changer.

I have looked into it but put off by the loss of space. Do you mind sharing what you did

We rent, but would be interested in soundproofing advice nonetheless.
