To think this is an unreasonable level of noise

In my house (terraced), double glazed windows closed, earplugs in and I can still hear next door neighbours child and them talking, they ares in the kitchen - their windows are open.

I just think especially since I have ear plugs in that if I am still hearing you then your being unreasonably loud.

We rent, but would be interested in soundproofing advice nonetheless.

I am planning to redo my kitchen in next two yrs so actually this has reminded me that I should look into soundproofing the wall first if I can.

I would like to soundproof the neighbours. Under the patio.

Sadly this is but a dream.

It is amazing though, kids asleep and they miraculously talk at normal level that I can barely hear them. Funny isn't it how they don't want their loud volume to disturb their kids but its okay it is disturbs other people

If you can hear people talking next door then you've got sound proofing issues.

Talking in a kitchen during the daytime is perfectly reasonable

murasaki · 05/06/2023 20:23

I particularly enjoyed when male shouty bastard bellowed at the kids to stop running up and down the stairs as apparently they were too loud....

AvonCallingBarksdale · 05/06/2023 22:16

@Spectre8 yes we lost a couple of inches but it really was worth it. I can’t remember exactly how much it cost (was about 10 years ago) but think it was around £3K for 2 rooms downstairs. We didn’t do the upstairs as the fitted wardrobes filled with clothes and bedding muffled noise and we were planning to move anyway. But hands down it was the best bit of home improvement. Without wishing to sound like a twat, I’d never lived in a semi-detached so was completely unprepared for being able to hear neighbours. When we lived in older flats in London, the walls were really thick so we never heard a peep from next door.

I don't doubt that, its clearly single brick party walls its just amzing that I've lived through two sets of owners on that side and never side a peep. Even my neighbour to my left where our lounges share the party wall, i don't hear and I would of thought I'd at least hear low level tv noise and I don't.

And how after there kids are asleep I never hear their conversations.

That is what leads me to believe they are talking far louder that neccessary.

Thanks @AvonCallingBarksdale I will look into it.

Was just about to go to bed, and lo, they have returned home

I have this too - one side not a peep apart from the occasional times they have visitors. The other side I hear every conversation from 5/6am till late at night. I sleep with earplugs and have low level music playing constantly but it doesn’t block out everything - it’s not a soundproofing issue, it’s an inconsiderate idiots issue.

murasaki · 05/06/2023 22:38

I don't even know if they saw the pissy nappy that must have landed right outside their back door. Yet.

Thank you for providing a safe space to vent so I don't try to address them....

When we used to live in a terrace we had one neighbour who was completely fine, barely heard a peep from her, unless she was talking to her dog. Then she'd start with this incredibly shrill shrieking baby talk at an astonishing volume. I'm amazed the dog didn't run away in terror. I had to invest in some very expensive noise cancelling headphones because she was always up at the arse crack of dawn putting Precious out for her wee.

She was shrieking away in the garden at 6.30am on a Saturday morning once and the neighbour on the other side shouted out his window at her to "shut the F up or I'll turn Precious into a kebab". Felt like sending him a gift basket.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 05/06/2023 23:17

At least you haven't got the dog loudly and repeatedly being encouraged to have a piss in the yard at 11pm.

HAVE A WEE, GO ON HAVE A WEE THERES A GOOD BOY Gin

Maddy70 · 05/06/2023 23:18

Some people are just loud my daughter is like a fog horn. She doesn't mean to be loud. It's just her voice!

Spectre8 · 05/06/2023 23:20

Oh gosh some really awful stories here. Well they clearly have a routine of noise, at least they are quiet after 7pm cos they want their precious children to not be disturbed so at least my evening are peaceful enough. I'll just as far as possible go out or wear headphones. I jut fancied reading my book today as its a good book at I can't focus on reading if I wear headphones playing music.

Anyhow one day we will have nice neighbours again.

I hope.you are right. It has been a splendid day at casa nightmare next door. She has been on the phone most of the day, and if I had a.tenner for every time she has yelled 'junkie crackhead c##t', I could afford to rent a Premier Inn room to work in tomorrow. In fact for the rest of the week.

No way I am confronting the mad bitch, she is bigger than me and clearly very unpleasant. I am getting closer and closer to calling the council.
