Your favourite city break with teens.

We’ve never been on a city break with our children (12 and 14) and would like to. Wondering if you can recommend your favourite place you’ve been. We would like to go in October but may have to wait until May to save up. I think the weather will be nicer in May too. Thanks for any recommendations.

Madrid was great, went when DD was 15 and again last year at 18. Also Lisbon but not quite as interesting for teens I think. Surprisingly loved Brussels.

GandTtwice · 05/06/2023 17:37

Are you looking for UK recommendations or abroad OP?

Liverpool is a great city break with teens - there's loads to do even if the weather isn't too great.

FuckYouEzekiel · 05/06/2023 17:47

Berlin! Went after all the amazing reviews on here. Kids loved every minute.

universityhelp · 05/06/2023 17:57

If it's UK, then I think you can't beat London as there is so much to see and do, especially the big museums which are free. Otherwise, I agree Liverpool is really good too, it's nice around the docks area and there is enough to do for a couple of days especially if you've not been before.
Otherwise, what about Glasgow or Edinburgh? I've never been but would like to go to both as being in Scotland, it would feel different to home.
If you want to go overseas, I can't recommend anywhere as we've only really done typical holiday places, but what about Berlin, it always seems to get good reviews on MN.

Berlin or Barcelona. Both have loads for teens to be interested in.

Hausmauss · 05/06/2023 18:02

I would recommend Berlin and Budapest for teens.

QueSyrahSyrah · 05/06/2023 18:05

Copenhagen has loads to do in all weathers, and a theme park right in the heart of the city, if they're into that kind of thing.

mybestchildismycat · 05/06/2023 18:07

Krakow. Absolutely loads of teen-friendly stuff to do and relatively inexpensive.

Anaemiafog · 05/06/2023 18:08

In the UK it would be Edinburgh, (pandas!) London, obviously because there's so much to see and do. The place I enjoyed far more than expected and was great value for money was Liverpool. We stayed at The Titanic, which wasn't cheap, but the room was enormous, food great and the spa was an added bonus.
I love York too but live close by so wouldn't stay over.

Following with interest. I'm interested in Washington DC, Naples, and Rejyjavik if anyone has any experience in those!

Lapland123 · 05/06/2023 18:12

Copenhagen for sure! Just fantastic!
Barcelona and lovely weather there in October when we went

PaigeMatthews · 05/06/2023 18:16

Mine loved London and Birmingham the most in England. They also really enjoyed Liverpool.

The giant Pandas are heading back to China in the next few months.
Edinburgh still a great suggestion though!

QuintanaRoo · 05/06/2023 18:18

Florence would be nice

RabbitsRock · 05/06/2023 18:19

Valencia?

Pieceofpurplesky · 05/06/2023 18:21

Valencia. Beach. City. History. Science. Technology. It has everything

Crikeyalmighty · 05/06/2023 18:22

Having lived there I think Copenhagen is great with teens as it has stuff on the water, cycling, beaches and fun fairs- one in centre and a beautiful old one 20 minutes out- excellent metro and 3 briliant malls if the weather isn't great - plus a train trip over the bridge into Sweden and a 15 minute potter over to the lovely upmarket fishing village of Dragor- also in my opinion the best airport in Europe and only 12 minutes into centre from airport .

ErrolTheDragon · 05/06/2023 18:36

It depends what your kids are into. Dd enjoyed Rome, Paris, Berlin and various U.K. cities as a teen, but I think she'd have found venice and florence too art-heavy (or else DH and I wouldn't have got to see everything we wanted to)

lieselotte · 05/06/2023 18:50

In the UK we went to Edinburgh and I would also recommend Liverpool, Cardiff and Belfast. Glasgow is worth visiting too and could easily be combined with Edinburgh.

Outside the UK we went to Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg, Copenhagen/Lund and Rome. We also did a trip to Lake Garda and then went to Verona and Brescia from there. Lake Constance is good too, but better for a summer trip than in the autumn I think.

I went to Helsinki as a late teenager, and really liked it, but went in the summer. I've been in October as an adult and you can combine it with Tallinn.

Of all of them, I think Copenhagen is a great option, especially as you can go over the water to Sweden and get two countries in one trip. I mentioned Lund, it is a very pretty university town and an hour from CPH by train.

EarthlyNightshade · 05/06/2023 18:50

We liked Lisbon a lot. Kids were a bit younger so aquarium and cable car were of interest, but also lovely days out, beach and football stadium as well.
Venice was surprisingly amazing as well. We just roamed around and soaked up the atmosphere.
We did Lisbon in May and Venice during Easter (different years!).

Lovetotravel123 · 05/06/2023 19:12

Prague, Seville, or maybe Berlin?

Crikeyalmighty · 05/06/2023 19:14

@lieselotte I love Lund- we used to go regularly

whiteroseredrose · 05/06/2023 19:15

Berlin
Rome
New York

papaandmama · 05/06/2023 19:17

We have just got back from Copenhagen and loved it but it is incredibly expensive to eat out so if you’re into that, budget for it! Lisbon is much more affordable and also very cool.
