Would you hang washing in your front garden?

Would it be weird to put a clothes maiden out in the front garden to dry washing (no underwear!!)?

Context:
Fairly quiet road.
Neighbours tend to sit out in their front gardens when the weather is nice but they're all v v respectful and do not play loud music etc.
I don't have a back garden, just front.
My flat is prone to damp so I am wary of drying indoors.

In my situation, would you do it?

I would in your position.

sprungspringv · 05/06/2023 15:27

@Butterflybutterflies thanks! I think I'm going to do it, it just feels a bit strange!

I did this at my previous house, it was fine.

yes absolutely would in your circumstances

Patchw0rk · 05/06/2023 15:31

Yep! No knickers but yep.

Rollercoaster1920 · 05/06/2023 15:32

Only after building a 6 foot fence or growing a 6 foot hedge. And installing a gate so no-one could see.

LunaLoveFood · 05/06/2023 15:34

I do regularly, the front garden gets all the sun.

lemonaddde · 05/06/2023 15:34

I would hang up basic stuff but I wouldn't put anything expensive out there. You never know who might mooch past and swipe things!

So no one can see your t-shirts and jeans?

OP it's absolutely fine. I wouldn't even think twice.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/06/2023 15:36

Of course. But I don't have any weirdness about unwritten rules that make no sense.

And we used to live in a back to back, so did just this as we only had the front we could use.

Bonding · 05/06/2023 15:40

Would it be liable to be pinched?

LadyJ2023 · 05/06/2023 15:40

Hang your washing out who cares lol get it dry while you can

UsingChangeofName · 05/06/2023 15:44

I wouldn't where I live, as you only have to leave something for 30 seconds and it gets taken. I don't know whether clothes would, but I wouldn't be surprised. However, I have a back garden option.

In your case I would.

sprungspringv · 05/06/2023 15:45

Unlikely to be pinched, it's a nice area and all the neighbours chat, there is always someone out in their garden on a nice day, also not really anything worth pinching! It's just children's clothes/pjs, the few bits I wear from work (not expensive) and DPs work uniform with the odd tea towel/blanket.

I'm going to do it, just waiting on this load finishing, it's lovely today and I'm sure it'll be dry really quick, I'm excited!

By nice area I don't necessarily mean low crime just close knit, people really look out for one another.

StormShadow · 05/06/2023 15:51

Yep, I would and do. Some people on MN are hilariously batshit about this though, so buckle up.

imsureineverdo · 05/06/2023 15:52

In your circumstances absolutely!

MegaClutterSlut · 05/06/2023 15:56

100% I would

Polari · 05/06/2023 16:01

I used to work in an old Yorkshire village and there were lines of washing hung across the cobbles. When you have back to back housing you have to put your washing somewhere.
I liked to see it.

maddiemookins16mum · 05/06/2023 16:05

Yep for sure. Maybe not my boulder holders or Bridgets, but everything else for sure.

bonfirebash · 05/06/2023 16:06

I would check if it's a flat as not always allowed but if you aren't like me and don't have shitty neighbours that will report it... do it!

User565394 · 05/06/2023 16:10

On a maiden, yes. On a clothes line, no.
So in your case yes I'd do it. I would probably still peg things on in case rhey blow off though.

I hope your washing smells all lovely and fresh when you're done.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/06/2023 16:12

Someone needs to challenge this 'not allowed' to hang washing outside flats instead of meekly complying.

It affects absolutely no-one and is the most appropriate way of drying clothes as it's environmentally friendly and doesn't risk causing damp. What does MN always say about people wearing revealing clothes - if you're offended by it, you shouldn't be looking. So apply the same logic here.

TomatoSandwiches · 05/06/2023 16:14

A stipulation upon buying our house was that we couldn't hang washing in the front or side gardens.

sprungspringv · 05/06/2023 16:16

I've done it! Grin

I'm glad I asked as clearly most people see it as a normal thing to do that saves the environment and money. I expected a more mixed reaction.

My flat is 'self-contained' so I have my own front door that leads to the garden that is fenced and only belongs to me- downstairs neighbour has their own garden and front door so it's not like I've took over a communal space.
