NC for this
I was coming out of the shop this morning making my way back to my car, a man was getting out of his car and asked me if the cash machine at the shop was working, I said sorry I've no idea. Then he said I look beautiful and asked if he could have my number, I declined as I'm very happily married and told him so, he just said ah that's a shame and drove off.
For context I'm a very plain looking 45 year old but I will admit I was very flattered. Nothing like that has ever happened to me before

Nothing flattering in that. It was most likely a PUA loser practising his pick up lines

I was flattered as I thought it was a compliment but reading the comments has made me feel differently now.
Yes, very happily married

Flattery in my opinion is something much more subtle and different. It's hard to explain but genuinely hitting on someone normally includes certain looks/body language etc.

This sounds like something different and a bit too full on to be genuine.

I would've been very suspicious.

Similar happened to me YEARS ago. I was walking along a busy street and a guy walking towards me stopped me and asked if I had a light. I told him I didn't smoke and he said, 'that's OK, i'll use my own then' before lighting a cigarette. He then started trying to chat me up. I was young and single but didn't feel comfortable at all.

I don't think you should feel bad about being flattered though, who doesn't like being told they're beautiful?!

By someone I know, not some random bloke in the street trying his lines out.

I think it's great. When I was younger I used to get this all the time. As I've aged (although I've aged well) it doesn't happen. I wonder if I haven't aged as well as I think OR times have just changed and men tend not to do this so much anymore.

OP - take it as a win!

'Tis a thing. Not experienced it personally because y'know, RBF.....but it happens. I think there are some threads on here about it.

It's emphatically not a win. Unless for you a 'win' is being hit on by a random sleaze counting on you being too polite to tell him to go away.

Yes. It's awkward AF & a sign of a man who couldn't give a damn about your boundaries.

It is creepy doing it in the street In a bar is understandable. It does sound very dodgy him walking the street asking about cash machines

He asked for her phone number, not her price list.
