DD12 period on beach holiday - help!

EarlyBirdCatchesTheWorm · 04/06/2023 21:55

Hello mumsnetters

Looking for tips. DD11 started her period recently and is likely to have it on a beach holiday in a couple of months time.

She is ok with period pants and sanitary towels but not wanting to use tampons.

She loves to swim/paddle. Not the point but this holiday had to be cancelled and rescheduled twice, it's to a lovely place and she'll be gutted to not be able to get stuck in and play in the water with siblings. Any tips for managing period (without tampons) on a beach/sea? Is period swimwear good enough??

OP posts:

This we have one - problem sorted

plenty of period pants wash and dry and hand out each night

TheChosenTwo · 04/06/2023 22:15

Dd was about this age when she had her second period on a holiday in Spain, she used tampons but I don’t think I knew anything about period swimwear back then! None of us have used them now so I can’t advise unfortunately but some people will be along soon I’m sure who can let you know. Good luck, it can just be so fucking rotten being a girl sometimes 💐

See the doctor. He can give her something to delay her period. A daily tablet. She'll come on as soon as she's home and stopped taking it.

I got it for my 13 year old. It's not hormonal...

I'll look in to it for you as it was a godsend for her (and me!)

Love to your daughter. It's not fair is it?

Sunandseaforme · 04/06/2023 22:16

As above, have used these for my teen daughters successfully.

Can you remember what it was called?

Anyway OP call GP. I think she'll need to start taking it about a week before she's due on.

Obviously listen to GP.

I wish it was about in my day!

Norohisterone, or a spelling similar. I'm about to take it for the first time to delay a period

Cookerhood · 04/06/2023 22:19

It is hormonal, that's why it delays the period.

I have used this as a teen and it worked well. I’m pretty sure it is hormonal though as that’s what makes it work.

Okay, but only for a short while. I did say speak to GP and not rely on me.

We got given something else at the same time to stop bleeding just in case.

Okay, so I'm a doctor, just trying to help.

It probably won't be norethisterine for her age, but there is an alternative.

WeAreTheHeroes · 04/06/2023 22:22

Why the resistance to tampons? They are perfect for this. A lot less faff than period pants and swimwear.

It doesn't matter why.

AxolotlEars · 04/06/2023 22:24

Period swim wear from Primark. Comes in variety of sizes 🙂

Deadringer · 04/06/2023 22:24

There is nothing faffy about period pants. You just wear them and wash them, no faff

overthehillswegoo · 04/06/2023 22:25

Norethisterone

You're giving your daughter something that you appear to know very little about 🤔

Well I see my view goes against the grain, but tampons are easy to use, easy to dispose of and you don't need to be washing period pants on holiday where you're unlikely to have a washing machine.

No the doctor is prescribing something. PP isn’t randomly picking something up off a shelf and giving it to her daughter, she’s taken her to a professional for advice.

I could not get tampons in until I was 16. I just couldn’t do it. Quite a few of my friends were the same and I have 2 friends in their 40s who have never been able to get them in. Just because they worked well for you at that age doesn’t mean they will work well for everyone. Lots of teens find them difficult to use.

highlandspooce · 04/06/2023 22:30

@WeAreTheHeroes

Well I see my view goes against the grain,

It's not about going against the grain. If someone doesn't want to use a tampon that's their decision. Their choice and their right. Your op in of them has nothing to do with someone else's choice.

You can get the tablet to delay the period, it is hormonal but it’s not a contraceptive. I’ve taken it before. One thing to bear in mind is you can still get period like symptoms if not the bleeding like mood swings and headaches. I think you can buy online as well although not sure if DC is younger.
