DD12 period on beach holiday - help!

EarlyBirdCatchesTheWorm · 04/06/2023 21:55

Hello mumsnetters

Looking for tips. DD11 started her period recently and is likely to have it on a beach holiday in a couple of months time.

She is ok with period pants and sanitary towels but not wanting to use tampons.

She loves to swim/paddle. Not the point but this holiday had to be cancelled and rescheduled twice, it's to a lovely place and she'll be gutted to not be able to get stuck in and play in the water with siblings. Any tips for managing period (without tampons) on a beach/sea? Is period swimwear good enough??

It not a given she'll be straight into a regular, heavy period. Good to have options just in case but it may not happen on holiday.

Loopyloo159 · 04/06/2023 23:15

I cannot remember when I was that age but my daughter just used liners and changed after swimming . Her period was very light so not a problem.

FiftyNotNifty · 04/06/2023 23:17

I got the period delay medication for dd1 when she was 14, however when I asked for it very recently for dd2 who is 11 they said no.
Both very regular but the age thing seemed to be an issue.

See the doctor. He can give her something to delay her period. A daily tablet. She'll come on as soon as she's home and stopped taking it.

I got it for my 13 year old. It's not hormonal...

I'll look in to it for you as it was a godsend for her (and me!)

Love to your daughter. It's not fair is it?

Of course it is hormonal. How else do you think it works??

newusern1 · 04/06/2023 23:17

Supposedly moon cups are also an option for when swimming. I’ve never used them so no idea if they are any easier to use when young than tampons.
personally after having DS I have never found tampons comfortable since and I don’t think they were easy to use when a teenager either.

Well I see my view goes against the grain, but tampons are easy to use, easy to dispose of and you don't need to be washing period pants on holiday where you're unlikely to have a washing machine.

Pretty invasive for a child that age.

LittleOwl153 · 04/06/2023 23:19

My niece uses a pair of period pants under some swim style shorts or a standard swim costume sometimes and she's a regular swimmer.

My ddaughter only has an issue day1/2 in the pool. Beyond that whilst she's wet she's fine it seems.

And yeah 2nd period didn't run to time here... probably 3 months down track, then 3 months more for the third...

Modibodi period swimwear also works well I find! So many more options now than when I was a teenager!

You're giving your daughter something that you appear to know very little about 🤔

Do you have an intricate knowledge of everything you eat, drink and medicate yourself with?
Didn't think so!

Xmasbaby11 · 04/06/2023 23:20

We may have this problem with dd11 when we go away - and she’s v irregular so impossible to predict. I’ll look into the period swimwear.

If an 11yo doesn't want to put something in her vagina the discussion ends there.

We know very little about most of the stuff doctors prescribe!

If your dd has just started her period, it’s unlikely that she will be straight into a regular monthly cycle. My dd had her first period at 11 (the day before first day of secondary school), but then didn’t have another for three months.

So I wouldn’t assume she will have her period when away.

Id just be really low key and keep lots of Orion’s available - some period swimwear, some light tampons, dark towels, sarongs/beach cover ups. Big hat and fancy sunglasses if she’d rather read at the beach. And maybe nice plans for if she just doesn’t fancy a beach day should she feel uncomfortable with any options.

I was just coming on to say this. It took a good while after dds first period for hers to become regular so she may not have her period on holiday at all, fingers crossed. I'd buy some period swimwear just in case. I definitely wouldn't be fucking her hormones around further with hormone tablets and I doubt a GP would prescribe them for a 12 year old that has only just started menstruating.

Why the resistance to tampons? They are perfect for this. A lot less faff than period pants and swimwear.

I'm with you on this one. My daughter is 13, and has used tampons more or less since she started having periods. It's saved her any period related anxiety (she's saw classmates mortified by stained clothes).

Do you know forums and posts work?

You should read the previous posts really.

The speculation about why a pre teen girl might not want to use tampons is invasive and weird. Stfu. I hate them too and don’t use them.

WhereTheSuburbsMeetUttoxeter · 04/06/2023 23:31

*how

PrincessScarlett · 04/06/2023 23:32

I always thought tampons were not recommended for young girls/teens🤷🏻‍♀️

I would definitely take a few options if you don't delay her period. I've never used period pants/swimwear but others swear by them. My concern would be if the period is very heavy then I'm not sure how they would hold up.

Comedycook · 04/06/2023 23:32

My dd12 has just had a week of swimming lessons which coincided with her period. I bought her the modibodi swimsuit. I cannot praise it enough...saved the day. Don't really understand how it works but it does! I highly recommend it

AliceMcK · 04/06/2023 23:35

Goodyetalso · 04/06/2023 22:30

I could not get tampons in until I was 16. I just couldn’t do it. Quite a few of my friends were the same and I have 2 friends in their 40s who have never been able to get them in. Just because they worked well for you at that age doesn’t mean they will work well for everyone. Lots of teens find them difficult to use.

I’m almost 50 yo and used them twice, both in my 40s absolutely hated them and was in agony each time. I will never recommend them to my DDs if there are alternatives available.

I wish period swim ware was around when I was young, my life would have been so much different. I remember a school trip to France I couldn’t get in the water once, I was in shorts the whole time I was so paranoid, in pain and terrified to think about trying tampons again after my first attempt when I was 12.

highlandspooce · 04/06/2023 23:36

@LaffTaff

Why do you have to be 'with' another poster on the subject of someone else's choice not to use tampons? That's weird. What you and people you know do with your period makes no odds to anyone else.

NoraExplorer · 04/06/2023 23:38

Might another option be tranexamic acid tablets? They slow the bleeding right down and if you start taking them the second you start your period, I've found they work within 24hours and the rest of the period will be very light. If your GP is reluctant to prescribe norethisterone they might agree to TXA. Coupled with period swimwear your DD shouldn't have any embarrassing incidents. Good luck Flowers

stardust40 · 04/06/2023 23:39

Dd14 had Noristerone last year. Worked perfectly no probs. I don't think she'd have enjoyed her holiday having to worry about leaking etc with any other solution.

This is what DD was prescribed too in case she did come on.

GP has it on repeat for her, due to the very very heavy flow, days missed from school.

However, he did say it's not to be used every month.

Guess what all you people accusing me of giving my daughter drugs that I know nothing about - she's thankfully never had to use it.

Oh well. Night night.

I'm giving a contextual opinion on the advantages of a period product. There is nothing remotely weird about it.
