How do I clean this toilet please?

Hi. I've tried leaving bleach in it overnight, and I've tried Harpic tablets over night, but it's still stained. Should I try emptying the water out and putting bleach directly on the stain, or what should I try?
TIA

How do I clean this toilet please?

The black Harpic works wonders - I just left it on overnight for a few nights - no need for scrubbing!

Ours was due to builders dripping dust down the toilet

I’ve heard of people putting the tablets to clean false teeth in the toilet but I’m not sure what for, whether limescale or what I’m not sure.

Longer term - you need to get some Domestos limescale remover, leave overnight then scrub the next day to shift the limescale. May need 2 nights.
After that put toilet cleaner down.

Dirty toilets are often because poo adheres to the limescale. Once you’ve got rid of the limescale, it’s easy enough to clean.

Mirabai · 04/06/2023 15:05

The limescale treatment needs to be done periodically to keep it at bay,

thebestsellingshow · 04/06/2023 15:07

Definitely black harpic it's amazing stuff!

InSpainTheRain · 04/06/2023 15:08

If you're in a hardwater area it'll be stained limescale. Take the water out of the U bend. Squirt a full bottle of Viakal down it and over it. Leave the window open. Leave overnight.

Have a read of these reviews. I have always found HG products very effective.

I've used an old knife in the past to chip it all off but bear in mind this can leave scrape marks! Learn from my mistake and go with the black Harpic.
Also as you've put a 'before' picture on, you should definitely update with an 'after' picture! Grin

@SnowyMouse i had a similar situation tried baking soda, coke etc but what worked was emptying out the water and using Harpic Power Plus Toilet Cleaner 750Ml.

I left it and then used a brush and flushed. Had to apply some more to the really stubborn stains.

I was also going to suggest Harpic Power Plus. I had also tried coke, soda crystals as well as Domestos (even leaving it overnight), kettle descaler and Steradent, none of which worked.

When someone suggested Harpic, I thought I might as well give it a try and couldn’t believe that it worked so well. No more grotty toilets for me! 😁

WholeWorldsPivot · 04/06/2023 15:22

Another vote for limescale Harpic…

CrotchetyQuaver · 04/06/2023 15:30

Harpic black limescale tablets left overnight every night for a week should see that gone

EmpressMoo · 04/06/2023 15:35

Yes to bailing out the water and black Harpic or white vinegar. It will be quicker if you use a plastic scraper once it has softened a bit. Then use black Harpic overnight on a regular basis, at least once a week (no need to bail out the water).

Student DS and his flatmates made a similar mistake of only using bleach to clean the loo in a hard water area because none of them had ever lived somewhere with limescale. Their loo was much worse than yours on move out day. It only took a couple of hours of soaking to get it back to sparkling again but they did scrape and reapply a few times.

Scoop out the water. Fill with white vinegar and bicarbonate of soda. Leave overnight. Comes off easily with a scouring pad.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 04/06/2023 16:09

I use black Harpic but as a one off HG do a really effective line scale remover you could leave in overnight
A bottle of white vinegar poured in and left is cheap and effective too

FofB · 04/06/2023 16:15

Depending on how old your toilet is- you might have a small quarter turn screw on the small pipe which refills the toilet. This means you can turn the water to the toilet off. Then you can flush the toilet and it won't refill- then you can soak/clean/chip as you please.

NashvilleQueen · 04/06/2023 16:19

I once searched for this question on here and tried a lot of the suggestions (not black harpic as I didn't see that at the time). The one that worked best and hasn't yet been mentioned is a 2p coin. Sounds ridiculous I know.

I emptied most of the water out with a cup and then scrubbed the bowl with a 2pm. It was absolutely amazing. Completely back to normal again.

SnowyMouse · 04/06/2023 17:24

Thanks all - I've got lots of things to try now!

Well I've used the tablets twice overnight in a row, and it's looking much better. I can't work out how to get the sides done though, any ideas?

The seat needs cleaning OP.

weetabixwithbutterandjam · 06/06/2023 12:13

There was a tip on here before that scraping limescale off with a 2p does the trick!

Thepleasureofyourcompany · 06/06/2023 12:13

Clean the rest of the loo. Then use a small cup or scoop to take all the water out and use a limescale product on it overnight

Whataretalkingabout · 06/06/2023 12:27

What did you use?
Plumbers use hydrochloric acid.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 06/06/2023 13:05

As it is heavily stained it will likely take a few attempts to get it all off but that's really good progress
I'd just keep going
Swish a bottle of white vinegar around and leave overnight or try citric acid
Pushing water around the u bend will help too
