Do you have an ironing board?

Rarely use it and it's taking up a lot of space in my small home. Should I chuck it? Is there a smaller alternative?

Yep, and it's used every week.
10 white school shirts, plus maybe a work shirt or 2 if DH has had meetings. And I have a couple of summer work tops that need ironing too.

WotNoUserName · 02/06/2023 12:48

No. I had one,but I never iron. Then a friend needed one so I got it out of the attic and gave it to him.

Still have an iron. Somewhere.

Barbara luckily we are all different .. personally I don't understand why anyone would share their home with cats Grin.

Yes, but I only bought it two years ago. Before I used to iron on bed or sofa, but when my iron broke and I had to replace it, I bought ironing board too.

Lorrymum · 02/06/2023 13:00

No, ironing free household!

Iheartmysmart · 02/06/2023 13:01

I have neither an iron or an ironing board. DS took both when he went to Uni, I have no idea if he knows how either of them work.

Assignedtoworryyourmother · 02/06/2023 13:02

Do I have one? Yes.
Do I use one? No.

Lochjeda · 02/06/2023 13:05

I only ever use it if we are going to a wedding or funeral something where my husband needs an actual shirt and trousers ironed otherwise I chuck a towel on the worktop, we don't have loads of clothes that need ironed. Sons tshirts, polo's and jumpers I iron like that.

BonnieGlasses · 02/06/2023 13:08

Only because the landlord supplied one in the flat. I've never used it.

MamaDollyorJesus · 02/06/2023 13:09

It lives in the hall cupboard beside the steam generator, regular iron & handheld steamer.

I'm an ironer & don't care what anyone says you can tell that clothes have never seen an iron. I refused to buy DS's P1 class photo because they'd put a kid in unironed uniform right in the middle of the front row & it just looked awful.

I'm very particular about my clothes & wouldn't let anyone else wash, dry or iron them - DD does her own & it looks like she has literally thrown them from the basket at a distance to the washing line 😱

Zipps · 02/06/2023 13:10

Yes I use mine weekly. I have lots of cotton and a couple of silk items and I like to look after my clothes.

JadeSeahorse · 02/06/2023 13:14

Yes, put mine away an hour ago.😊

Just ironed the bed linen and several t shirts. Can't bear creases!

continentallentil · 02/06/2023 13:16

You can get a tabletop one, or just use a teatowel on a table.

Bluebells1970 · 02/06/2023 13:20

I not only have an ironing board but an ironing room 😂when our last DC left the nest, I was able to grab back the smallest bedroom and I've got the ironing board left up in there, with our heated airer and a clothes rail. It's used daily.

I'll get my coat on the way out ...

Diagonalley96 · 02/06/2023 13:21

I use mine daily and it fell apart yesterday 😭 this has reminded me to go pick up a new one from Argos!

I don't understand why anyone irons any more. Once you've got dressed and gone anywhere whether it's by walking, driving or public transport, your clothes will look the same whether or not they've been ironed. If not, you're washing/hanging them wrong.

We got rid of the ironing board when the cats destroyed the cover and I also realised if anything ever needed ironing, it could be done on a towel on the kitchen island. This has happened less than once a year for the past decade and most of that was when I was shortening curtains and wanted to make sure the hem was straight.

If you wear cotton or silk shirts and don’t iron them then you look like a bag of laundry. And if you look the same when you iron them, then you’re ironing wrong.

However if you wear jersey all the time then you can get away with no ironing if you hang it quickly I agree, although it will look better if you iron.

Many synthetics don’t need it at all, but that doesn’t really work in summer…

MaryJean87 · 02/06/2023 13:21

Yes, I used to iron in the kitchen on the worktop but easier with a board. I slot it behind a chest of drawers upstairs so it doesn't take up any space.

morelippy · 02/06/2023 13:22

I have mine out a couple of times a week. I hang my washing outside, carefully and fold as I get it off the line. T shirts, shirts, dresses, cardis all need ironing else we'd look like a bag of rags

pinkpirlie · 02/06/2023 13:22

Had one, took it to tip at weekend after it sat in garage for the past 4 years unused. It was disgusting after all that time.

EBearhug · 02/06/2023 13:25

Yes, and use it often. I have a lot of cotton and silk.

Babdoc · 02/06/2023 13:25

I have one that hasn’t been used since DH died 31 years ago. We used to iron his work shirts.

Alighttouchonthetiller · 02/06/2023 13:31

I use mine daily. Most of my clothes are cotton or linen so look awful if unironed. I also iron tea towels and bedding. It's a lovely way to pass the time- listening to podcasts and being enveloped in the clean smell of washed clothes. Also school uniform needs to be ironed and I do DH's shirts.

Snailsaresweet · 02/06/2023 13:32

Yes - I use it most weeks as I wear a lot of cotton and (in the summer) linen. It sits outside the shower room and has a towel placed permanently on it, so that the cat can sit there happily!

happystory · 02/06/2023 13:37

Yes it was a wedding present Grin 30 years ago! Hardly use it nowadays....

Stripedbag101 · 02/06/2023 13:56

I is hand mine in the back of the hot press door.

use it about once a week
