Living in Chellaston, Derby

Hello,

Im moving from Devon to chellaston as my husband has just landed a good job with RR. We are looking to be in chellaston, I know there are a few nicer areas not far from there that we are also looking at but my preference is chellaston due to it being closer.

Anyone live around or near the area? My question is, is it a nice place to live and bring up children? What’s the locals opinions of chellaston too, is it thought of as a sh&t tip, considered a posh place to live? What’s it like?

Please tell me your thoughts wise ones.

I'm from Derby originally and I don't know chellaston too much but I see there's been no replies. I know it's one of the nicer parts of derby. Im from alvaston which is sort of next door and chello is nicer than alvo. It's pretty much a suburb, few shops, pubs nice houses. Not sure on schools. Hopefully someone else will come along but yes it's a nice area. Probably not as nice as Devon and I would prefer to live there lol. Good luck with the move!

Aimzxo · 02/06/2023 14:17

Hi, I live not far from chellaston, nice area, nice houses, low crime rate now that a couple of the pubs have closed down, however the schools have gone right down hill and ofsted are involved, that could change && it also depends if you have children :) good luck! Xx

ilovebagpuss · 02/06/2023 14:21

There are some decent schools and housing around Allestree in Derby where a friend lives. There are some really nice villages around the outskirts of Derby too. I grew up in one and it was only 15 mins to Derby.
I would recommend a weekend up there and drive around a few areas then you can google lots of actual schools and areas for more detail.

Beezknees · 02/06/2023 14:33

It's nice. I live in Derbyshire but further out.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 02/06/2023 14:46

It is a niceish area, not the nicest but once of the nice bits of Derby.

It has had massive new build estates built recently that have changed the character a lot but are generally nice commuter type houses. It hasn't got much in the way of a village centre anymore, the old pubs closed, but there is a modern one by the A50. It is also pretty poor for public transport.

Alvaston and Allenton are close by and are to be avoided. They both have local shopping areas which are useful but I wouldn't go in the pubs. Avoid Sinfin too which is where much of RR is.

Littleover is convenient and nicer. Mickleover is also nice, a bit further again but an easy commute.

Allestree and Darley Abbey are nicer still but on the wrong side of town for RR.

RosaSkye · 02/06/2023 14:48

Obviously it depends entirely what you’re looking for, personally I’d move to Allestree and commute (it’s not too far- lots of people do)

Beezknees · 02/06/2023 15:29

Yep, avoid Sinfin and the places closer to the city centre like California and Normanton. They aren't nice. Also avoid Chaddesden.

lilyboleyn · 02/06/2023 17:45

I taught in schools around there - the secondary school situation is dire…

Houghmot · 02/06/2023 18:37

Thank you all.
Yes I’m struggling with secondary school if I’m honest! What’s the best school in the entire area? I may think about sending them to private school

Derby High School in Littleover

Sorry i agree about Allenton but I have to disagree about Alvaston. I've grown up there and worked in a couple of the pubs and they're fine. Not posh but not rough. It's just a normal place to live. I still have friends there.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 02/06/2023 19:28

That said the schools in Alvaston are awful.

Useyourfork · 02/06/2023 19:43

I’ve heard that Spondon secondary school is doing well under the current head teacher. It’s a nightmare to get out off at peak traffic times though. It has a friendly village feel and an active community.

Useyourfork · 02/06/2023 19:46

Landau Forte secondary school has a good local reputation - Chester Green / Darley Abbey area.

Wildflowersinthemeadow · 02/06/2023 19:47

Ecclesborne is generally considered the crème de la crème in secondary schools - for catchment, you need to be in Duffield, Little Eaton, some villages going towards Ashbourne … however it did have an inadequate OFSTED recently. It’s worth mentioning though that this was safeguarding based rather than academic progress.

Chellaston is okay but gets incredibly congested at peak times. Private school wise, you have Derby High and derby grammar. Both in littleover and both were single sex at secondary until this September, I think.

Welcome for derby!

ChickenMacaroni · 02/06/2023 19:59

Is your DH definitely going to be based in the Moor Lane site? If so, Chellaston / Alvaston are a good bet. Chellaston is probably the nicest (although Sharlow Road and Linden Drive are nice areas of Alvaston). Aston on Trent also worth a look - kids tend to go to Chellaston for secondary School which is fairly middle of the road and decently regarded locally. St John Fisher in Alvaston / Aston on Trent primary are "naice" primary schools.

There's another site on Raynesway. If DH will be there, then consider Oakwood / Spondon / Chaddesden / Ockbrook. The Cherry Tree bit of Chaddesden is nice and in catchment for West Park in Spondon which is a very good school at the moment. Spondon or Borrowash or Ockbrook are nice with villagey type centres and good primary schools (and a choice of church / big / small schools).

Also, many departments still aren't going in every day (2 or 3 days a week seems fairly typical) so it might be worth weighing up a bigger house for hybrid working, or looking further out if he's only going in occasionally.

RobinHumphries · 02/06/2023 20:17

Chellaston school used to have a good reputation, Chellaston Academy not so much. Aston tends to be a bit….. insular and suffers from limited mobile signal

Erised21 · 02/06/2023 21:33

Devon to Derby...it had better be a good job!

As a previous poster said, Ecclesbourne in Duffield is the best school around. I think it performs better than the local private schools.

I would personally look at living outside of Derby and commute in. Depends what you are looking for. Best state school would be Ecclesbourne, so as PP said, Duffield or Little Eaton. Not Belper or Milford, they are nice places but not if you have kids. Same for Ashbourne, nice place but lots of drugs.

Allestree is also nice. Ticknall, Repton and Melbourne are nice villages. Borrowash is okay.

Actually, personally I would look at areas around Nottingham, namely West Bridgford. That'd be my pick for bringing up kids.

Erised21 · 02/06/2023 21:41

Aston on Trent and Ashby de la Zouch are also nice.

Surely its not considered the creme de la creme after that Ofsted report? - it was absolutely damning about the culture of the school. If I wanted to be on that side of Derby I would go to Littleover rather than Chellaston. It's really not far from one to the other and Littleover Community School is meant to be good.

supersonicginandtonic · 02/06/2023 22:22

Ecclesbourne is not the school it once was. I'd avoid Alvaston, Allentown, sinfin etc. Chellaston is ok. The villages just outside derby are nice. Findern, willingtom, Repton, Hilton and etwall.

supersonicginandtonic · 02/06/2023 22:22

@Sundaefraise little over community is a lovely school

RedRosie · 02/06/2023 22:27

I don't know about schools. But have you thought about Melbourne to live? Very nice. Easy for RR.

RammyEwie · 02/06/2023 22:37

The secondary in Chellaston is traditionally strong, but has had a rough couple of years (likewise the recent OFSTED for Ecclesbourne). Long term, I would expect them to get back on form as the majority of their catchments are decent. Littleover is a pleasant and reliable area. The comprehensive is strong, the other schools are private. I'm not sure what Derby Moor is like these days. It was rough in the 2000s and picked up a lot and I haven't heard much since.

Allestree is also a reliable area, but the commute to RR sites goes through more congested areas of Derby. Oakwood is nice and has easy access around the edge of Derby but doesn't have reliable access to good secondaries; it's not West Park catchment and it's not connected to Spondon other than by car.

Landau's catchment covers all of Derby but is the most over-subscribed school in Derbyshire with 5 applicants for each place last year. It's also the far side of the city centre or about a 10 min walk from the bus station.
