Do you shut bathroom window so neighbours don’t hear?

Not a Troll but feel annoyed by neighbours comment.

It’s been warm, we have most of our windows open, including the bathroom.
Neighbours moved their patio a couple of years ago, so now have a seating area pretty much in line with our bathroom window. I did feel a bit odd one morning the first year, as I sat doing what comes naturally, and heard neighbour scraping the cereal out of their bowl, but figured it was their choice to site the patio there.

Went to the loo earlier -just a wee- I was bursting so it was a bit louder than normal I suppose, when I heard neighbours talking and one said ‘oh great, we get to listen to that again’.

I was ‘WTH?’ Are they expecting us to keep our windows closed so we don’t offend their sensibilities whilst we are using our loo?

So, do any of you close the window so neighbours don’t hear you, or just accept it’s part & parcel of living side by side? In our last house we heard our neighbours when we were in our garden & never gave it a second thought. Are we inappropriately using our bathroom?

Yes, I do! We live in a terraced house-our loo window is not far from their loo /bedroom window.

Mum2jenny · 01/06/2023 21:13

Wouldn’t care as everyone pisses and shits, so any neighbours can just get over it.

WhiplashGirlchild · 01/06/2023 21:16

I can't picture this window, lawn, hedge, patio setup. Any chance of a diagram?

RightWhereYouLeftMe · 01/06/2023 20:07

I don't shut the window but I don't think you can hear. I've been in the garden when DH has gone for a wee and couldn't hear (not the I was specifically listening, but then I assume no one is sitting silently carefully listening out for it).

I can't believe I am reading a thread about having a wee

noodlezoodle · 01/06/2023 21:45

No I wouldn't.

I think it's important that you make passive agressive remarks about them when you're in the bathroom, and complain about their chewing noises and bowl clinking.

What a bunch of twits, placing their seating and table right beneath your bathroom window. Hmm And then making snide comments about you peeing!!!

I'd be doing super loud farts, tipping water out of a bottle into the loo and going 'aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh I needed that!' and wafting the poopy smell out of the window. How fucking DARE they comment on something you can't help doing? Confused (Doing your toilet business!)

And no, I would NOT be closing the bloody bathroom window!

goodness that’s a very angry aggressive response, for something like this. Or anything on line Really.

op, I assume when they were planning their patio then they never thought they would be able to hear you. Personally if I knew they were out there I would close the window.

redspottedmug · 01/06/2023 21:49

I wouldn't worry.
In a previous house the neighbour's bathroom window was directly opposite our kitchen window. Which wasn't an issue as the elderly resident was confined to the ground floor.
On the day of their funeral though - oh my - a never-ending parade of visitors were using the loo in full view, as someone had helpfully pulled back the curtain Blush

Fortunately the new owners installed blinds!

Forshameandyegads · 01/06/2023 21:51

No, I don't. The bathroom window is open all day, every day here.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 01/06/2023 21:58

Blondey2023 · 01/06/2023 19:49

Yes I always close the window when using the loo, would be embarrassing if neighbours heard. Then open it back up when I've flushed.

Same here. I play music on my phone, too, if they are out there.

MrsCarson · 01/06/2023 22:05

You missed an opportunity when she moaned about you using the bathroom, you should have shouted, More fool you for moving your patio next to my toilet.
Love the idea of a jug of water from a height.

FeelingwearyFeeelingsmall · 01/06/2023 22:06

Seriously - people think the noise of a wee is 'grim'? It's just running water. Does the sound of the tap running afterwards also bother them?
Do they also think the sound of rain or a babbling brook is grim?

I'd carry on as you are OP. But if their very precious opinion is bothering you, keep the window open but play very loud music whilst you wee. And perhaps for a while afterwards too.

Jokingette · 01/06/2023 22:15

They’re finding it effective to mutter or pass comments to make you feel uncomfortable and to get what they want. You’ve already moved the compost bin and now feel embarrassed to use your loo with the window open.
Carry on as you are and toot a herald before and after you ‘go’. Drown them out.
Don’t allow them to shame you. This is your house. How dare they?

Knockmealdowns · 01/06/2023 22:18

Your allowed live and pee freely in your own home..

Tinkerbyebye · 01/06/2023 22:18

You should have just shouted back, hold on a few minutes Mary and you can rate my farts out of 10

No I don’t close my bathroom window when using it. If neighbours want to sit under it then they can expect noise

SmirnoffIceIsNice · 01/06/2023 22:19

Sit on the throne making lots of loud groaning noises, then throw something in the water that makes a loud splosh sound. Stand up and say "fuck, how did that get in there?"

ActDottie · 01/06/2023 22:20

I wouldn’t close the window, particularly given they moved to be nearer to it. Although I can’t imagine what the layout is of your house such that this is an issue.

We are in a little cul de sac with our house at the end so we aren’t all in a row.
X is our bathroom window. Squiggly line between us and N neighbour is hedge, their lawn (small one) is at the side of their house & P is the patio. Their old patio was at the back of the house but is now a garden office type building I think.

to the question about extraction, we don’t have one. I guess that’s why we always have windows open. Also I know from the bathroom at work, when you are in there it stops you from hearing, but outside can still hear everything!

The bathroom is floor to ceiling tiles, here when we moved in, maybe that’s why they hear so much. I have noticed if they are on their patio talking we can actually hear them in DS bedroom at the far back of our house and it sounds like they are sat under his window. It must be the way sound echoes in our street or something.

Yes, I close the window. Some things should be kept private. I open it afterwards. So does DH.

In the same way that I don't turn the bathroom light on if I shower at night because I don't want anyone who happens to be walking down the back ginnel to see me naked 😂

WeAllDoIt · 01/06/2023 22:25

This is what I said to DH earlier.

FriendofKate · 01/06/2023 22:25

No I wouldn’t change a thing. It’s your home. Stuff them.

They’d get a shock if anyone noisy moved in by the sound of it, as opposed to someone just ‘living’.

SpilltheTea · 01/06/2023 22:27

They asked for it by moving their patio.

Mamette · 01/06/2023 22:27

Don’t change to suit them.

If you hear any more comments shout “omg DH I think those people are listening in again! Do you think they’re perverts?!”

BungleandGeorge · 01/06/2023 22:28

Yea I’d shut the window. Just the same as I’d close the door so that people inside the house didn’t have to listen!

BeyondMyWits · 01/06/2023 22:30

Nope would wait for a comment next time and shout BINGO...

how dare they make passive agressive comments about you going to the loo in your own home.

Thanks! Now that I'm in possession of the full facts of the situation the verdict is 100% in your favour and the neighbour is a CF.
