caggie3 · 01/06/2023 18:29

Daily struggles at the moment of every suncream I try hurting my 4 month old and causing a huge flare up on his face and arms Sad can anyone suggest one that won't hurt him every time I have to apply it?!

We have a three year old with eczema..my sister recommended a spray by amber Solarie factor 50 sensitive which seems to have done the job. You don't have to rub it in. I would patch test it first. It's £7 in boots

frannyfrannerson · 01/06/2023 18:32

We also use a uv suit and hat to minimize areas having to put it on.
Child's farm is also supposed to be good

JamMakingWannaBe · 01/06/2023 18:33

I personally would not be putting sunscreen on a baby that age. I would be keeping them out of the sun.

I didn't think sunscreen was to be used on babies under 6 months old. I may be mistaken as I know advice changes however.

I used to just keep both dds out if the sun, got them to wear hats, covered up arms and legs when out and about.

frannyfrannerson · 01/06/2023 18:35

She was also born in October so she didn't go in the sun until well over 6 months so other posters may have a point about this and we keep her out of the sun wherever possible as this can cause eczema flare ups

fyn · 01/06/2023 18:40

As PP have said, don’t use before 6 months. Once they get to six months use a mineral sunscreen, not a chemical one. The chemical ones cause a chemical reaction in the body which can aggravate skin conditions. The mineral ones sit on top like a physical barrier so less irritation.

coxesorangepippin · 01/06/2023 18:41

What pp said. Just keep out of sun

Long sleeves/hat if outside

Littlegoth · 01/06/2023 18:43

We used aveeno baby zinc oxide when he was little - expensive but worth it. He’s nearly 3 now and his skin has cleared up, but he’s fine with the Aldi kids sensitive now.

herbygarden · 01/06/2023 18:44

My DS had eczema as a baby and the HV recommended Aldi's kids one - extra sensitive and factor 50, it's only about £3/4 too. It's fab, I still buy it, even though he has largely outgrown his eczema.

Itsanotherhreatday · 01/06/2023 18:45

Try Aloe Vera Barettes brilliant for eczema lovely soft skin works wonders

CastleTower · 01/06/2023 18:49

I think most suncreams say they're not suitable under 6 months, because babies have such sensitive skin. Long, loose clothes and staying out of direct sun is preferred.

BurbageBrook · 01/06/2023 18:52

He shouldn't be in the sun enough to need suncream at that age. Keep his skin covered, hat etc, and keep him shaded.

Littlegoth · 01/06/2023 18:54

(As pp have said though not before 6 months, just kept him in the shade with a big hat on)

AhNowTed · 01/06/2023 18:56

OP I have to agree with others.

My daughter developed horrendous eczema at 3 months.

Every foreign holiday we ended up at a hospital with a skin infection.

At 4 months your baby shouldn't be in the sun anyway, and definitely not with eczema.

caggie3 · 01/06/2023 19:07

Oh god I feel terrible! We've taken him to the beach and all sorts and out in the paddling pool so I thought I had to. 🙈😫

BurbageBrook · 01/06/2023 19:25

Aw don't worry OP everyone makes mistakes and advice changes so it can be confusing! Could you get a parasol and a UV protective outfit maybe?

CastleTower · 01/06/2023 20:23

Long sleeve swimming costumes are great! I really like that these are normal for little kids now, they're so much better than sun cream anyway.

Don't worry, good that you know before summer really kicks in anyway.

LolaSmiles · 01/06/2023 20:25

I kept mine out the sun and in loose fitting clothes made from natural fibres most of the time.
Child's Farm and Green People do some nice options for sensitive skin.

user1472831787898776 · 01/06/2023 20:33

Don't worry about what's done, but definitely wouldn't be putting suncream on a four month old with eczema going forward. As previously pointed out, it's not recommended for babies under six months anyway due to their delicate skin. Adding eczema into the mix is just going to make it worse.
Best thing to do is keep them out of the sun - hat, shade and UV swimsuit.
My baby is 10 months old and has eczema. I have just kept her out of the sun so far (including on two holidays abroad) as I can guarantee that sun cream will not agree with her skin.

caggie3 · 01/06/2023 20:47

Could I of caused any permanent damage or like issues or is it literally just the rashes/irritating his eczema now? I'm spiralling about it now he's had it on most days for a few weeks and I've tried multiple ones to try and not irritate him. Will stop using any and just keep him out of the sun. He is mostly out of the sun but there will always be some exposure so I've just put some on to be safe. Ah!! BlushSad

I highly doubt you've done any lasting damage no! The reason it's not recommended is because of the risk of skin reactions being higher. And also because the best defence for a young baby is to keep them out of the sun rather than relying on sun cream.
It's an easy mistake to make when the importance of sun cream is drilled into us, please don't beat yourself up over it, your baby will be fine.

AhNowTed · 01/06/2023 21:07

OP I would suggest the following

At 4 months he shouldn't be in the sun anyway

Later on, sun cream will sting his eczema skin. As will any water based lotion. So I used to use Vaseline first to create a barrier, and then put the sun cream on top of that.

HTH.

JenniferBarkley · 01/06/2023 21:07

I'm sure he'll be absolutely fine.

When you try again, try a lower factor - factor 50 is so thick it's really harsh on the skin. It's trial and error for skin stuff really, we all have sensitive skin but by some miracle Nivea sun cream works for us all.

mindutopia · 01/06/2023 21:32

The only one I’ve ever found that works for ds with eczema is the La Roche-Posay kids one. It’s bloody expensive, but I buy it once ir twice a year and only he uses it so we make it last.
