Domestic and general

I’ve never used insurance before for appliances so just wondered how it works. How soon can you claim? Is there a time limit? Also do you have to pay extra? What if the item can’t be fixed? Does anyone have insurance with D&G are they any good?

I think D&G would be best placed to answer your questions. Are you able to contact them?

I insure my dishwasher and washing machine through domestic and general for years now.
I must say I have found them excellent when I have needed a repair and very quick too.
I don't know how soon you can claim after taking out the insurance, but I think that if the machine or whatever can't be fixed, they replace it. I might be wrong.
But I do think you would be best placed placed to speak to domestic and General about this.

Won’t get time to call them yet I was just going to do the plan online. Trust pilot has been a bit mixed reviews

Have it for my washing machine as it is used so heavily. Twice D&g have done a replacement and 2 repairs. Just call them with them with your reference and they book an engineer visit. Decision is made if can be repaired or not worth it and they write it off and replace it. I've had really good service from them.

SilverOrchid · 01/06/2023 13:45

You’d need to read the T&Cs for your specific policy. They change quite frequently and the experience of others may be irrelevant to what you’re buying

PopcorningPancakingWheeking · 01/06/2023 13:48

My washing machine is insured by them. No complaints they are brilliant.

PopcorningPancakingWheeking · 01/06/2023 13:49

I don't know about time limit as I applied as soon as I got the machine.

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 01/06/2023 13:53

I have insurance through D&G for our tv, tumble dryer and by proxy through John Lewis for our fridge and washing machine.

Only had to claim a couple of small repairs on tumble dryer - touchpad started pulling away from its surround within 6 months of purchase and they sent out a relevant engineer who replaced the whole front of the tumble dryer; more recently, same dryer, the water reservoir started leaking due to cracks in in (wear & tear not damage) but they were happy to send out a replacement rather than book an engineer.

No excess and prices haven’t increased following claims. In both cases the parts would have cost more than the monthly payment so overall it’s a good investment an, if a replacement dryer was needed, that is covered in full too!!

I don't normally insure appliances but washers seem so prone to faults that I insured mine. I wish I had just put the money in a washer fund. It gets more expensive every year and recently when I had a fault at the weekend I couldn't get hold of anyone. When I did it was going to take 10 days to get it looked at. I just bought a new washer, never again.

Really recommend them. I insured all my new appliances after the warranties had run out. They have been excellent in terms
of service and replacing damaged items. No quibbles, no questions. Absolutely rate them.

This is what we have done. Was with D & G but had so many appliances covered it was £50 a mo th so now l just save the money and self insure!

Mindymomo · 21/08/2023 14:25

I’ve had it in the past, washing machine went wrong a month after guarantee run out. I called D&G out, they came 3 days after, said they needed to order a part. A week later they rang to say part was in and came and fitted the part 4 days later. So I was without a washing machine for over 2 weeks. This was all covered, but took far too long for a small part. I cancelled policy and saved the money each month so I’ve got the money to buy replacements and get next day delivery.

Anyport · 21/08/2023 14:33

D&G will outline the terms of your contract. I'm not sure of what you mean by "claim". My contract for a number of items means that if something breaks down then I call them and they send out a repair man to inspect it. It is then decide if it is cost effective either to repair or replace.

Rina66 · 21/08/2023 14:42

I have washer, dryer and range cooker all insured with D & G. Last time I needed them to come out they were quoting 11 days, whilst on the same call they then proceeded to talk to me about insuring my fridge freezer and dishwasher, I said I don't think you should be touting for any more work when you clearly can't service the customers you already have! Having said that, I think insuring these goods is necessary, they should just have a 3 or 4 day wait list, not 11 days.

Boymummyofone · 21/08/2023 14:50

My mum has D&G insurance for all her white goods and they've been really good. A few years ago the clicker on the hob wasn't working so they had to replace it and as they couldn't find the same model they replaced with a better upgraded cooker. All free, well if you don't count the monthly/annual fee. They're also really quick on call outs, you sign into the portal and choose a convenient time for them to attend.

Cotswoldbee · 21/08/2023 14:55

I can't stand them and would never use or recommend them.

Was mis-sold a policy by them last year and when, a few months later realised that it did not cover what we thought it did they cancelled it ok but refused any refund of premiums. We spent so long on the phone being pushed from pillar to post with every agent we spoke to agreeing that the policy was indeed wrong and should never have been offered to us but no-one could do anything about the refund. After a few weeks of this we gave up and chalked it up to experience.

Bubbles9ct · 11/10/2023 13:40

Fabulous I've been with them for approx 20yrs. They have never let me down. In the past 2yrs they replaced my cooker and fridge freezer very speedily and gave a great choice too.I wouldn't use any other Company.

Honeysuckle16 · 11/10/2023 13:51

Definitely would not recommend them. I had several appliances insured with them and they sent an engineer when the washing machine broke down. I did a wash and the machine broke into flames! Luckily I was there to put it out. Called a local engineer who said the D&G engineer had fitted the wrong part and fitted it wrongly. They replaced the machine but I’d lost trust in them and cancelled all my policies with them.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 11/10/2023 16:11

I've had good experiences of them, including twice this year.

jaffafa · 16/01/2024 23:20

Yes, i agree. You pay monthly premium but there is no engineer until 1 and half to 2 weeks away, better put money aside each month and hire a private engineer that will come out quick. I am gonna do that for my new cooker.

WhatNoUsername · 16/01/2024 23:30

I have no idea why anyone would buy insurance like this. Just put some money aside and get recommendations locally for. good appliance repair person. We have one. The last time I used him, he came out within 30mins and had fixed the appliance within an hour as he carries loads of parts on his van. We've had to call him out twice in about 4 years. Cost about £60 a time. Appliances don't generally break that often unless you are very unlucky.

I once got an extended warranty on a washer dryer as I had heard they were particularly prone to breaking down. Never used it. Complete waste of money. Especially now I know it's relatively cheap to get a local person in, they come quicker than the manufacturer can send, and the repair is often better quality!

onwardandupwards · 17/01/2024 00:18

I used them for my washing machine. It took 4 engineer visits before (after a lot of phonecalls) they agreed to replace it, I was left with no washing machine ( I have 4 dc) for over a month and they couldn't of cared less. Will never use them again.

Eric76 · 24/01/2024 21:21

I have been with D&G for a couple of decades and insured over 12 appliances in recent years. They replaced a Miele washer dryer around 2 months ago within days of a Miele third party company coming out, because the appliance was uneconomical to repair after 5-6 years of use, but today they decided to not to replace a Bosch compact multifunction oven, because they deemed that Bosch had instructed a reasonable price of £500 to replace some parts and take a month to do so. Needless to say I cannot understand what the difference in replacing one appliance was 2 months ago, and not replacing the other when both were suffering with excessive expense to replace spare parts and were about the same value in price. If anyone knows please enlighten me because their CEO's office failed to do so.
