EasyJet

Has easyJet bookings changed recently?

I used to be able to travel with a small carry case for free but now they cost about £27?

Yet, a 23kg case to go in the hood is part of the ticket price?

I can't work this out!

I thought it would be cheaper for DH to have the hold case and DD's and I would rely on small cases to carry on. Easier to fit the cases in a hire car as well then.

Have I misunderstood or is it more costly to choose smaller cars to carry on now? Am I being a bit thick here??

You don't get a free hold bag either, the free cabin baggage is limited to rucksacks that fit under the seat in front. Booking a second cabin case is bundled in with premium seats/speedy boarding.

FlounderingFruitcake · 31/05/2023 16:42

You get a small carry on included but it must fit under the seat in front. You pay for a large overhead carry on, or you get it included if you buy up front or extra legroom seats. You still have pay for a checked bag to go in the hold. So not free but it might work out cheaper to do a large checked bag for everyone than several carry on suitcases. Recently though I’ve found that BA have ended up cheaper as you still get the carry on suitcase with them. Which is annoying because I hate them.

Aaargh this is so tricky.

I remember now why Inused to drive to Europe! Between flights and hiring stupidly priced cars, it may be cheaper to drive there in my van!!

We’ve come to the same conclusion but I can’t face the length of the drive for short trips!

OneCup · 31/05/2023 17:59

Yes it starts adding up, doesn't it?!

MarinatemysoulinSprite · 31/05/2023 18:29

Also bear in mind that the free bag which must fit under the seat in front is the only bag you can take on for free if you haven't forked out for speedy boarding, so you technically can't take a handbag as well.

IME speedy boarding just means standing in a queue (often outside!) for waaay longer than everyone else!

Babysharkdoodoodood · 31/05/2023 18:41

Take the train? I'm going abroad in November via Eurostar/inter railing

TheCyclingGorilla · 31/05/2023 18:54

For our sins we are going with BA to our holiday this year because it was about the same price as EJ but the baggage allowance was generous and included in the price. EJ isn't cheap anymore.

As for trains my parents do a lot more travel by train now because they hate airports and waiting around and like to lookout of the windows! Smile It's only a bit more expensive.

gogohmm · 31/05/2023 19:16

I book one checked 23kg between us then take the smaller (free) cabin bag only - works out pretty reasonable unless it's peak travel. I paid £160 for 2 people return to Spain including luggage recently

LIZS · 31/05/2023 19:25

If you book priority boarding or upfront/legroom seats you can take a cabin case as well as small bag for under seat.

LauraBea55 · 31/05/2023 19:52

Recently travelled with Easy jet - had free under seat baggage as part of the ticket price. Doesn’t HAVE to be a rucksack. We bought Cabin Max suitcases (make sure to check the measurements as they do 2 sizes) which fitted well under the seat.

I was so worried it wouldn’t fit, but it did!! It fitted 5 days of outfits. The only thing we did differently was buy our liquids/shampoo/deodorant when we got to our destination. Saved us a lot of money!

Watch out because Ryanair under-seat size is even smaller!

We had vouchers from Covid and a flight that Easyjet cancelled on us (!) in April. We managed to get flights (x3, our Eastpacks under the seats) to Paris soon with only €7 to pay.

Were getting the High Speed train back (mainland Europe) because it’s more civilized, we can watch the French countryside roll by, we can bring back as many souvenirs as we like and it costs about the same!

rookiemere · 31/05/2023 20:14

With Easyjet there are a few different options and it pays to scroll your way through all of them before deciding ( unless you're booking on the morning flights are released in which case just take your chances).

You can

  • buy a bundled package that either includes a cabin bag or for a different fare, a check in one
  • you can pay for a 10kg cabin bag
  • you can pay for check in luggage

Recently I've found check in luggage to be cheaper on a trip to London, and because so few people are checking in bags we didn't have to wait long for ours.

reluctantbrit · 31/05/2023 20:24

It's really getting ridiculous complicated and expensive.

We found that BA is getting more and more competitive. Better luggage allowance and if you add everything together, often cheaper actually if you are bound by weekends/school holidays.

How does it compare to the standard wheeled cabin bags is it a lot smaller? Am thinking it'd be about half the size?

LauraBea55 · 31/05/2023 21:20

@Thereisnoname it was probably 2/3 the size of an over-head cabin bag/suitcase.

loadypoady · 31/05/2023 21:50

When EJ withdrew the free cabin case they had the great value for money hands free service. It was £7 to put a cabin bag in the hold.
They very quietly withdrew the service at the end of 2021 under the guise of introducing a new simplified cabin bag service which is at least four times the price!
You have not misunderstood it is much more costly with EJ these days to take cabin baggage on board. Ryanair is cheaper now in my experience should you wish to take cabin rather than hold baggage.

illbeinthegarden · 31/05/2023 22:02

I booked to go away next month and booked our seats, I don't think I paid more for the hold luggage (23kg each or up to 69kg between all 3 of us) but it def says we have this included. Does it come when you pay to book your seats?

I found BA cheaper too for everything over the summer.

But I prefer to travel with them as I like heathrow terminal 5

LollipopViolet · 31/05/2023 22:09

It's so annoying - I'm flying up to Scotland for a figure skating camp next month with them. Obviously skates can't come in the cabin with me so I've had to pay for hold baggage and am having to play games with skate bags to see which one will work as my carry on bag. Might end up folding the skate bag flat and sticking that in the suitcase with the skates and using another backpack as my carry on bag.

catscalledbeanz · 31/05/2023 23:26

Imo easy jet lie. I measured before I left and ensured I met the guidelines. Arrived at airport and the "box" to fit it in was the measurements given- meaning my luggage met the size of the box and not within the box. £80 charge. On the way back i paid in advance for the extra (£40) only to be told in an no wifi airport that I hadn't paid it. I could offer evidence if they had wifi but oh well te hey didn't so that's my problem. Not their problem. It was only when I paid the £10 per day my supplier charged that I could log on and "prove" my payment that they agreed I HAD paid the extra. Enough for an apology and no extra charge, but not enough to reimburse me the £10 ot cost me to prove I didn't need to pay the £80 they wanted.

We're away at the moment and bought these. Fit a lot of stuff in them - particularly if you roll clothes up instead of folding - and it's the perfect size to fit in the size checker box. They're not the sturdiest of bags but totally fine for 4-5 days away I'd say,

toomuchlaundry · 01/06/2023 15:17

DS is going to Greece for a week with easyJet. Not sure he has realised the size of the bag they are allowed. A pair of his shoes would probably take up the whole bag! First time holiday with mates, probably thinking back to his scout camps when he didn't bother changing clothes, but not sure his mates will be so forgiving whilst sharing B&B with him. Realistically will he cope for a whole week with a bag this size? I know I wouldn't but I always overpack.

camelfinger · 01/06/2023 15:20

It used to be much more generous- you could take a wheely bag in the cabin for free. Now it’s much smaller, but not as bad as Ryanair. Agree with a PP that priority boarding/extra leg room booked seats are a good option as they let you take an extra bag.

@illbeinthegarden depends if you booked direct with easyJet or booked a package which happened to include easyJet flights. Packages often include hold luggage in the quoted price. Direct bookings don't.
