A kilo of out of date dessicated coconut - anything I can do with it?

I'm on a massive house tidying up vibe at the minute. Thread here

I've just emptied a drawer ready for cleaning and found a kilo of dessicated coconut that went out of date three years ago.

Are there any possible uses for it?

Baking with it isn't an option. I can't feed it to the birds.

What else can I do with it? I feel bad just dumping it.

I'm going to sort out and tidy up every drawer and cupboard in my house. Want to join in? | Mumsnet

This morning I woke up with a kind of itchy compulsion to sort and tidy every single drawer and cupboard in my whole house. I have no idea why but I'm...

It's dried stuff, yes? I'd still use it!

Twoshoesnewshoes · 31/05/2023 12:05

Ummm, mix it in with compost for planting?

JandalsAlways · 31/05/2023 12:11

If you have kids, colour it and use it for crafts

hedgehoglurker · 31/05/2023 12:15

I'd taste it. If it isn't rancid, it should be fine to bake with. Maybe try with something simple so it isn't a big wasted effort if it's unpleasant.

TheSandgroper · 31/05/2023 12:29

I would use it happily. No worries at all.

peacelemon · 31/05/2023 12:30

Make some sort of exfoliating cream with it?

MaryCondom · 31/05/2023 12:31

I don't have kids so no crafting activities.

I can't bake with it. I'm crap at baking. I hate baking. And I'm avoiding sugar at the moment.

If the coconut tastes okay, I could give them a try for a friend's wedding celebration in a few weeks. Thank you.

A quick google led me to this;
Homemade Coconut Soap... | The Diary of a Frugal Family
Not sure if its worth it by the time you've brought moulds etc, but could be nice.

Make a snow globe? Crafting isn't just for kids!

I love that but I don't have moulds. Dammit

@peacelemon Oh absolutely. I love crafting. Just never tried dessicated coconut-based crafting before.

Bin it.

You haven’t needed it in three years. You don’t need it now.

This is how and why houses get cluttered.

You could make a rangoli

Buy
Set up a business making coconut soap
Become global mogul with a six figure turnover
Talk in the global media about how you owe it all to leaving stuff in the cupboard to go off

:-D

Ah ha! Colour it and share it out to throw at the happy couple instead of rice or confetti

This then sparks an anti-cluttering world campaign.
Hoarding becomes the next in thing.

LakeTiticaca · 31/05/2023 13:09

Put it out for the birds

MaryCondom · 31/05/2023 13:14

@Datafan55 I'm loving the visions you have for my life, thank you!

@OwlBasket I'm not actually going to the wedding. They're having celebration drinks in a local pub. But I can't go to that either. So I was going to take around some champagne. Now it might be champagne and millions of coconut ices.

@peacelemon Wow, they are beautiful.

@LakeTiticaca Birds can't have desiccated coconut, sadly. That was my initial plan though.

I know I wish I had the patience!

AlltheFs · 31/05/2023 13:17

Set fire to it.

There’s too much coconut in the world as it is (I’m allergic, vile stuff).

Moredarkchocolateplease · 31/05/2023 13:23

I eat in in porridge. So do that.

NeverendingCircus · 31/05/2023 13:27

3 years out of date - wouldn't use it in anything culinary. But you could definitely make a body scrub or grainy soap with it.

AdoraBell · 31/05/2023 13:32

If it’s not rancid either put it out for birds as suggested or use it for baking. Do you ever make granola, or biscuits? Many recipes include coconut.

ReviewingTheSituation · 31/05/2023 13:33

Some savoury recipes use it (curries). I'd make macaroons (not macarons) rather than coconut ice. You really don't need baking skills for that. The out of date-ness wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

I'd gift it to a baker if you don't want to do any of the things up-thread.
