Washing machine & tumble dryer or a washer dryer?

We're moving house and up until now we'be been using a washing machine in a rented accommodation with no dryer.

Pros and cons about separate washing machine / dryer or washer dryer combo?

Which make do you use? Pros and cons?

Very grateful for any input Smile

100% separate if you have the space.

We only have room for one under the kitchen counter so have a washer dryer and its a nightmare. Long cycles and we've had 3 engineers out in 2years to repair the dryer part. 🙄 First priority when we next redo our kitchen is to make space for separates!!!

Oh thanks all, looks like separate is the way to go... now the next question is, which make is good? Anything to look out for, obviously energy rating would be one of the deciding factors.

I have separates and due to installation hiccups had to quickly purchase. Beko were available that day and cheap, so put them in mentally budgeting to eBay and replace the following year.

Yet 5 years later still working perfectly! And they're A++ energy rated. They do look budget, but they're in a utility room. So out of sight out of mind etc.

We have a washer - dryer, a mid range Bosch job that's only 6 months old. We recently downsized and don't have room for separate machines.

It's fine for us as there's only normally DH and I as DS is at uni. It requires a certain amount of planning eg. I need work shirts washed which I can't do if I've just stripped the bed and the bedding is in the machine and then needs to be dried. That whole process can take 6 hours if you use the eco settings.

There's also the issue that the drying load weight is much smaller than the washing load weight, so we have to run small loads if we then want to go on and dry the whole lot. I've often mused how I could make it work if we had a young family and multiple loads a week.

The dryer never actually dries completely and usually needs an extra 20 minutes to get laundry completely dry. However the machine is very energy efficient and doesn't seem to cost all that much to run, so I can't really complain.

Ideally I'd have separate machines but I'm happy to wrestle with the logistics of the washer - dryer rather than not have a tumble dryer at all.

Also when separate, you can have a load washing and a load drying.
