How Long After The Use By Date Do You Use Eggs?

Mine go out of date tomorrow but hoping to do ham egg & chips on Sun. Would you use eggs that long after the use by date?

Just do the float or sink test.

IWonderWhereThatDishDidGo · 29/05/2023 19:54

I'd definitely be fine with three days past their BB date for soft cooked eggs but would use anything after that for baking or something.

Hazelnuttella · 29/05/2023 19:54

Yes I definitely would. You can tell if an egg is off instantly. If you crack them and they smell okay then they’re okay!

Janek · 29/05/2023 19:55

Absolutely!

If you're put them in some water. If they sink to the bottom they're fresh. If they stand on their ends they're on their way out but still fine and if they float then don't eat them. I bet yours are very close to the bottom and will be for at least another week.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 29/05/2023 19:56

I'd use them for at least a week after the date. Never had a bad one yet!

TeenDivided · 29/05/2023 19:57

As others say. Put them in water, if they sink they are still good.

I accidentally gave DH eggs which were 3 months past their use before date. He's still alive.🙄

Crabacus · 29/05/2023 19:59

Eggs last for months, I wouldn't even look at the use by (or is it a best before?) on an egg.

MrsJBaptiste · 29/05/2023 20:00

I don't think I've ever looked at the date on an egg!
You'll know when you drack it if it's off or not 🤢

ODFODeary · 29/05/2023 20:00

I've never checked the dates on eggs, I'd never thought to

TheSnowyOwl · 29/05/2023 20:00

Just go by the egg once you crack; you can ignore the use by date.

ThatsRoughBuddy · 29/05/2023 20:01

I use mine weeks after the date! Never had an issue.

fyn · 29/05/2023 20:02

Ages, over a month before now! It it doesn’t float it’s fine!

CorvusPurpureus · 29/05/2023 20:02

Float test. Unless they bob about like corks, they'll be fine.

Might not be terribly 'perky' looking on the plate if they are slightly stale, though.

If you get through enough eggs, I'd buy 6 fresh & use for dinner, saving the slightly old ones for baking etc (I draw smiley faces on the ones that need using - dc know these are the ones to use for weekend pancakes/eggy bread/egg fried rice).

But if you don't get through enough eggs to justify that, they should be ok.

SweetBirdsong · 29/05/2023 20:02

Ummm, maybe up to 2 or 3 weeks if the weather is less than 22-23 degrees C. Probably not more than a week otherwise. OTOH if it is very hot I will keep them in the fridge. Still, no more than 2-3 weeks out of date. DH is an funny one; he won't eat ANYthing that is a single day out of date.

LilyLemonade · 29/05/2023 20:03

Use by date is irrelevant, test by floating / sinking as described above. If it sinks it's still fine, even if it's months past the use by date.

SweetBirdsong · 29/05/2023 20:03

A funny one, not 'an.'

Mine's like this. He will even eat things on the turn if they are in date. Weirdo.

Just sniff things.

mindutopia · 29/05/2023 20:11

If it smells off, I don’t use it. We don’t buy eggs as have hens, but I used to use store bought ones 2+ weeks after the use by date on a regular basis.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/05/2023 20:12

Ideally, I only use very fresh eggs for frying or poaching so they keep their shape. If they're older, including past the use by date, I'd be happy using them for baking, pancakes, omelettes, scrambled eggs and hard-boiled eggs, which are much easier to peel if the eggs are a bit older.

😂

Another thing mine does is... If we have say, 4 yogurts left that have a sell by date of 4th June, and I buy a new pack of 6 tomorrow that's in date til 11th June, he will start on the newer ones (dated 11th June!) as they're newer and fresher. Confused Leaving the bloody 4th of June ones. (Even though they have 6 days shelf life still!)

The way I get around it is to hide the new 6 at the back of the fridge at the bottom, as he CBA to fish around for the newer ones! Mad fuck. 😆

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/05/2023 20:26

@SweetBirdsong mine has been trained out of that one.

I'm now wondering if we're married to the same bloke.

CBAironing · 29/05/2023 20:27

Ignore the date. Float test.

Esjolaol1973 · 29/05/2023 20:30

My children survived egg mayonnaise sandwiches that my Mum made them . The eggs were 2 months out of date! I only new because the empty egg box was on the recycling bin n her kitchen.

bloodywhitecat · 29/05/2023 20:33

My eggs come from my chickens without date stamps, I pop them in the egg rack and use them as and when I need to.
