How Long After The Use By Date Do You Use Eggs?

Mine go out of date tomorrow but hoping to do ham egg & chips on Sun. Would you use eggs that long after the use by date?

is there an 'in between' stage between perfectly fine and obviously off? Has anyone found one 'a bit funny' but not obviously black and stinking?

I just go by smell - if it smells fine, I use it. If it doesn't smell right, it goes in the bin. I've only ever had to chuck eggs out once or twice in my life, and an egg has never made me sick.

I'd eat them weeks past the BB date. Just crack it open - if it's off you will know. The stench of a rotten egg is horrific!

My gran had eggs in the fridge that were covered with a very fine green mould, I didn't bother with those.

Weeks if not months. I pay zero attention to the printed date on them and go solely by the float test. I do keep them in the fridge.

@BarbaraofSeville yes, you do notice a gradual change - they start to stand up more before they float. They don’t taste off at that point though but maybe a bit less fresh. I always break eggs into a separate bowl rather than straight into the dish just in case though.

Echoing others, absolutely weeks and weeks. An egg, past its best, will make it incredibly obvious! Just crack it into a mug or small bowl before adding it to other ingredients (obviously not relevant for you making a fried egg!)

Easy, fun sink or float test for egg freshness

Float or sink test here too.

I've often used eggs up to 6 weeks past "use by" dates perfectly fine.

Flat on bottom of jug = very fresh
Standing on 1 end at bottom of jug = fresh but use soon
Rises up jug = no longer fresh, throw out
