How weird is my daughter's skill?

My 12 year old can reverse any sentence instantly, phonetically, so if you play what she says in reverse it sounds like the actual sentence
(So not like saying "enoph" for phone, she would say something that sounds a bit like "newoff")

She has just recorded the entire song "how bad can it be" from the Lorax backwards phonetically, without reading from anything. She says she can just do it. When she then reverses the recording it is recognisably the words.

How is she doing this? Is it a utilisable skill in any way or completely pointless?

Really unusual I’d say!

Cornettoninja · 28/05/2023 16:17

Wow, that’s pretty impressive.

I’ve no idea what mechanism is at play for that ability but it would be interesting to find out if it could be applied to anything else.

How is she at playing instruments? I’m wondering if she has that amazing ability to be able to pick up almost any instrument and recreate a tune.

No idea but how fascinating! 😀

Woo that's weird and oddly fascinating!

woofrood · 28/05/2023 16:19

That's fascinating!!

CatherinedeBourgh · 28/05/2023 16:21

I was going to ask if she plays music too. My 13 yo does and comes out with things which make me wonder how the hell he did that, he answers 'I just hear it'.

Some people's brains are just wired differently it seems.

Blablasheep · 28/05/2023 16:23

A girl from my secondary school was able to do that! We all thought it was an amazing skill but I don't think she made any money on it in later life. 😔

woofrood · 28/05/2023 16:23

I think she might be very succesfull at music composition

IndiganDop · 28/05/2023 16:23

She has a keyboard but has never had lessons, she can pick out a tune but not with any great skill imo.

She is quite good at French!!

This is what Chatgpt said:

With your daughter's abilities in phonetics, auditory memory, and linguistic processing, she may excel in various art forms that involve language, sound, and creativity. Here are a few potential art forms where her skills could be particularly valuable:

  1. Music Composition: Given her ability to manipulate language and sounds, she might have a natural inclination towards music composition. She could explore creating unique melodies, harmonies, and rhythms, and experiment with different genres and styles of music.
  2. Songwriting: With her talent for language manipulation, she could excel in writing lyrics for songs. Her ability to reverse sentences phonetically could result in unconventional and intriguing wordplay, allowing her to craft imaginative and thought-provoking lyrics.
  3. Sound Design: Her understanding of phonetics and auditory memory could make her well-suited for sound design in various mediums. Whether it's designing soundscapes for films, video games, or immersive experiences, she could use her skills to create captivating and immersive audio environments.
  4. Poetry and Spoken Word: Her ability to play with language and sounds could lend itself well to poetry and spoken word performances. She could explore the rhythmic and sonic qualities of language, crafting evocative and expressive pieces that engage listeners.
  5. Voice Acting: Given her proficiency in manipulating sounds and her understanding of phonetics, she might excel in voice acting. She could bring characters to life through her ability to modify her voice and deliver performances that are distinct and memorable.
  6. Linguistic Performance Art: Your daughter's unique ability to reverse sentences phonetically could form the basis for intriguing linguistic performance art. She could explore ways to incorporate her talent into live performances, combining spoken word, music, and visuals for a truly unique and immersive experience.
These are just a few examples, and there may be other art forms or creative endeavors that align with her particular set of skills. It's important to encourage her to explore different artistic avenues, nurture her talents, and provide opportunities for her to develop and showcase her abilities.

@CatherinedeBourgh apparently my grandfather could do it. It was referred to as having a ‘musical ear’.

Unfortunately it’s not something I inherited!

JFDIYOLO · 28/05/2023 16:37

How fascinating!

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 28/05/2023 16:37

Why am I weirdly jealous?

IndiganDop · 28/05/2023 16:38

I have made a little recording but don't know how to share - anyone know how?

One of my friend in high school was able to do that! She went on to transfer to a high school specialised in music, studied music in Cambridge and became an opera director

She’s clearly a witch.

Puccini1900 · 28/05/2023 17:38

She might have dyslexia - where you don't consider things in a linear way (eg. A, B, C, then D ), rather your brain processess information all at once (looking at a A, D, C and B all at the same time).

Radi0liverpool · 28/05/2023 19:12

Well o used to do that too! Now I do even more complex things with words in my head all the time. I'm not sure why or what it is.

PublicEmbarrassmentBlues · 28/05/2023 19:39

Super weird! I've never considered the possibility of this being a thing.

I did go to school with someone who could reverse a sentence instantly. That was amazing, and I've not since met anyone who could do the same.

woofrood · 28/05/2023 21:01

OP, when you say reverse a sentence, do you mean "sentence a reverse" or "ecnetnes a esrever"?

walklikeawoman · 28/05/2023 21:03

Following for the recording because that's awesome

pud1 · 28/05/2023 21:06

My husband can reverse a sentence but has zero musical talent. He also has a real head for numbers. His mental arithmetic is amazingly fast and he remembers numberplates and phone numbers instantly. I suppose it has helped him in his work but other than that it’s just an amusing party trick

TheGoodEnoughWife · 28/05/2023 21:07

That is super weird and super cool!

Never heard of it before but what an ability.

IndiganDop · 28/05/2023 21:36

woofrood · 28/05/2023 21:01

OP, when you say reverse a sentence, do you mean "sentence a reverse" or "ecnetnes a esrever"?

Ecnetnes a server, but even more cleverly, she reverses the phonics so it will sound correct(ish) when played forwards.
