How weird is my daughter's skill?

My 12 year old can reverse any sentence instantly, phonetically, so if you play what she says in reverse it sounds like the actual sentence
(So not like saying "enoph" for phone, she would say something that sounds a bit like "newoff")

She has just recorded the entire song "how bad can it be" from the Lorax backwards phonetically, without reading from anything. She says she can just do it. When she then reverses the recording it is recognisably the words.

How is she doing this? Is it a utilisable skill in any way or completely pointless?

I have synesthesia but didn’t realise for many years because I thought everyone saw letters in colours.
I also used to reverse everyone’s names when I was a dc but not sentences and I would be slower now.
I’m also left handed. Not sure if it makes a difference.
Haven't found any career opportunities from this skill though.

(I’m a tone deaf left hander)

My son can do this. Never seen/heard of anyone else being able to do this.

Is your dd musical? My son is. Also autistic.

Her brother is autistic. I really don't think she is (know all about female presentation etc) - she has a wide group of NT friends and hax never had any friendship difficulties, no problems at school, etc.

She has a double crown, I know crowns reflect brain growth, and doubles are rarer than single crowns.....?

Is she autistic?

Is she autistic?

No!

Her brother is and we are a bit of an ND family (but she is the most NT of the kids!)

Wow amazing !

Hamfish · 28/05/2023 23:02

So creeepy

Mirabai · 28/05/2023 23:04

I’m musical and good at languages and I cannot do this. I think this is more of an excellent memory issue than a musical one. (Although she would be good at aural - repeating a tune back or identifying intervals etc).

However I can speak in rhyme (like a rapper).

twotruthsandalie · 28/05/2023 23:05

I used to do this when I was a child, it started when I was about 8 and got to the point where I couldn't say or hear a sentence without reversing it in my head. It was an OCD kind of thing and I also had a lot of physical tics.

twotruthsandalie · 28/05/2023 23:07

Oh. I'm ND (diagnosed) and left handed.

IndiganDop · 28/05/2023 23:09

She is right handed
She does say that sometimes it feels compulsive and annoying. She isn't autistic (not in denial, she just isn't).

That’s totally awesome! Can’t believe how good it sounds when played in reverse. Weirdly much better than the stuff they stuck on various records over the years (which was genuinely just stuff played backwards!)

twotruthsandalie · 28/05/2023 23:11

Bless her, I hope she is ok. It got hideous for me and then eventually I grew out of it.

Although I've just watched your video and could reverse your sentences as quickly as your daughter did.

It's a useless 'skill' but I'm sure she has other talents.

twotruthsandalie · 28/05/2023 23:11

I'm not autistic either.

ChocAuVin · 28/05/2023 23:18

Wow OP! That’s simply amazing! Thank you for posting — sounds so cool

ButterflyOil · 28/05/2023 23:20

Wow that’s really unusual!! Can’t believe how clear she sounds.

trebarwith1 · 28/05/2023 23:43

Ahhh amazing! Hope she grows up to Channel her amazing mind into something she loves x da vinci wrote backwards didn't he? I think you can expect great things for her

IndiganDop · 28/05/2023 23:43

She's very pleased to have generated interest!

So fascinating!

Zonder · 28/05/2023 23:56

That's so cool!

EmmiJay · 28/05/2023 23:59

Get Dr Dre or Eminem on the blower. She could easily be a rapper with those skills! Amazing!

Moonchild18 · 29/05/2023 00:06

This is amazing, I've never heard of anyone being able to do this before so I've never even considered it being a thing.

Listening to the clip you shared, it almost sounds as though she's talking through one of those spirit boxes that psychics use to speak to those in the afterlife (I mean I've no idea if those are actually genuinely ghosts speaking but this is what your daughter sounds like when you replay her sentence back)

fdgdfgdfgdfg · 29/05/2023 00:48

Definitely an unusual skill. As far as practical uses, it would have been very useful in an episode of Taskmaster series 10, but other than that I reckon it's completely useless, like all the best random skills.

Whywere · 29/05/2023 01:08

Hey OP! I can do this. I never knew it was weird and that other people couldn’t/didn’t do it until I was about 18. Since then it’s become a massive party trick for me. I can also read and write backwards and upside down.

I would say I’m very neurotypical.

All of my family are really talented in English annd pretty academic and as a child I had a photographic memory which I’ve lost as I’ve got older. I think the combination of those two resulted in this ability. My youngest child also has it.

The main use it has for me is as a teacher, it’s a great way to break the ice and entertain kids ‘do my name miss!’ ‘Do supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!’

cemma · 29/05/2023 01:16

Sounds like a listening type job in the future, GCHQ? Seriously.
