She was such a hard working reporter especially during Covid. She was my go to person to listen to what was going on.
45 is no age.. Her poor family... 😔 😔 😔

What is your mission in this I mean you could have scrolled by ,but didn't .you could have said that's sad bit didn't. All you did was comment that this woman's death was self-inflicted ,why do you think that's OK? Would you say thaat to her family or anybody In real life who had died .from a "self inflicted" illness?

  1. you did not read what I wrote. I wrote IF"".
  2. My family would be quite angry (as well as sad IF I smoked and died early because of it, despite advice to the contrary.
  3. So at the risk of repeating myself for the people who cannot read properly.....a very public figure who is a respected reporter and influencer on the subject of "Health" MIGHT (MIGHT!!) be proud to be a NON-smoker.
weebarra · 28/05/2023 09:12

Jeez.
A woman has died at a very young age, leaving two young children, and someone has decided to co opt the thread and accuse people who disagree with them of being part of the 'pro-tobacco lobby'.
And then take issue with completely MN appropriate language.

Anyway, such incredibly sad news. Thoughts are with her family and friends.

@RPA900 You’re being told that your comments are unwelcome. They make you seem unkind at best, nasty at worst. Yet here you are.

I can’t fathom the mindset of someone who comments like this on hearing of a young woman’s death.

ArseMenagerie · 28/05/2023 09:24

I see you’re getting deleted now. Good.

Thank you for your valuable advice. I will be sure to limit my comments to disingenous platitudes of condolence in future. I hope we never find out anything and I promise to learn some foul language to help me fit in with modern social media experts like yourself.

lljkk · 28/05/2023 09:26

imho, not heartless to wonder if smoking was a risk factor in EM's illness.

However, for those who want to cast blame, I refer PP to a relevant Christian perspective.

If I had known that you owned this website - naturally I would have been much more careful to agree with every word you spout.....

🙄

you seem disappointed.... no expletives to describe your feelings?

CharlotteRumpling · 28/05/2023 09:59

I am following her on Twitter and didn't even realise she was ill. It must have been very sudden. Or she preferred not to ever talk about it, because it took away from her fantastic work.

How very tragic. I really feel for her family. She was such a dignified woman and clearly very loved and admired.

MumblesParty · 28/05/2023 10:00

It would be disrespectful and deeply offensive to talk about a death as being self inflicted if you were at that person’s funeral, or with their friends/family. But surely on an anonymous public forum it’s OK to speculate? After all, much of MN is gossip and speculation about celebs, whether they’re alive, dead, disgraced, honoured etc

LlynTegid · 28/05/2023 10:01

May she rest in peace and thoughts for her family, friends and colleagues who mourn.

MaidOfSteel · 28/05/2023 10:04

I heard about Emily on Stephen Nolan's 5Live show last night and could tell that Emily was held in high regard by her fellow journalists. I thought she was really engaging to watch and very informative, especially during Covid. Very sad news.

StillWantingADog · 28/05/2023 10:07

I had not considered for a second if she smoked. Suspect she didn’t’.

But I am also 45 and a mother of young children and think it’s just so sad.

LadyKenya · 28/05/2023 08:53

Some of the responses on this thread are just a prime example of some of the unpleasantness that permeates MN. I despair of human behaviour sometimes. May she rest in peace.

They are unpleasant because they are miserable and unhappy in real life. Their only pleasure is picking holes in other people. It must be a sad existence.

Mummytolittleones92 · 28/05/2023 10:26

Just out of interest, to those with the faux concern about smoking and cautionary tales, when someone overweight dies, do you bleat on about their medical history as well? Question how much processed food they’ve eaten? Do you yourself exist on grass and water alone? No, thought not.

Villagetoraiseachild · 28/05/2023 10:32

Shocked. Emily Morgan was such a beautiful and intelligent woman. She shone and was a bright light during covid times and beyond.

lljkk · 28/05/2023 10:41

When Deborah (BowelBabe) died she actively wanted people to know she had no risk factors for bowel cancer. This was an important part of the good she thought she could do.

Given EM was a health-stories journalist, I don't think she'd object to people discussing risk factors for lung cancer with reference to EM's own death. Lack of RF for lung cancer leads to one of the few funny moments in When Breath Becomes Air, too.

Anyway, life is short precious & uncertain. Live Life as best you can every single day, is something we can all agree on, I hope.

I think you are right in this so far... but as the morbid obesity and diabetes epidemics grow to massive proportions (no pun intended) in the relatively near future, and the health system is overloaded and hugely expensive, maybe more people will question whether we need to do more to defend the concept of healthy living.

Mummytolittleones92 · 28/05/2023 16:14

I agree that the health system is at capacity, but this is not the right place to have that discussion. A 45 year old mother of two little girls has died. What she died of and whether she smoked is irrelevant. There are two little girls, a partner and Emily’s parents who are no doubt completely and utterly heartbroken. This is a pain that will never really leave them. Spare your thoughts for them. Life is precious. Don’t waste it surmising on whether a wonderful 45 year old woman who contributed so much to this world was a smoker. Be grateful for what you have and stop trying to play the blame game over a poor woman’s death. It’s unnecessary.

JustDanceAddict · 28/05/2023 16:24

Really sad. My Dm died of the same, quickly, but she was in her 70s. You rarely hear of it in younger adults.
My DM did smoke but hadn’t for 30 years so we’ll never know the exact cause.

Bunbuns3 · 28/05/2023 16:34

I very much doubt she was a smoker. She seemed too sensible.

holaholiday · 28/05/2023 19:05

CatherinedeBourgh · 28/05/2023 16:33

Worldwide, 15–20 percent of men with lung cancer are non-smokers while over 50 percent of women with lung cancer are non-smokers.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7431055/

the non-smoking stats for women is skewed by the primary cause lung cancer for women in certain countries being down to cooking over open fires. in western countries the lung cancer rates in women have been steadily going up because smoking rates in women steadily went up in the last couple of decades in the 20th century . either way ,the death of someone with young children is always sad....but we are always drawn to tragic cases and some people in the public eye(Jade Goody notably) have done inordinate good and likely saved many others lives by being open with their illnesses. But not everyone wishes to be a poster person .
