Alcohol & daytime drinking now unfashionable & is judged?

Met friends for lunch a fortnight ago & was excited to meet up for a catch up &, our usual glasses of wine.. All three had varied excuses for not drinking & I felt judged for having a couple of glasses of wine! One referred to me jokingly as the "daytime drinker"..
They drank non alcoholic cocktails & some type of flavoured bubbly water in fancy glasses..
Is alcohol in general & lunchtime drinking gone out of fashion? For the record all of us are early 40s..

If it is judged, I'm happy to be judged. Love a daytime tipple with friends.

101cockerspaniels · 26/05/2023 12:20

So do I @Bordey & I was really looking forward to our catch up! Still really enjoyed myself but felt uncomfortable being the only one drinking...

Ditto. Who cares about being 'judged' - a word that, incidentally, I'd like consigned to outer darkness.

Only as much as not drinking is judged too.

People should care less about other peoples drinking choices

CovertImage · 26/05/2023 12:22

Also ditto. I also don't give a flying fuck what other people think

Thanks for the replies, I thought I had missed out on a new trend!

I prefer not to daytime drink but if someone wants a glass of something nice, who cares? Your friends are being weird!

Cryingbutstilltrying · 26/05/2023 12:26

I used to love a lunchtime drink but as the years have gone on, I find I’m pretty useless for the rest of the afternoon, even if it’s only 1 glass of wine. When the kids need to be taken about and with limited downtime, I find more and more that it’s just not worth it.
I would not judge my friends for drinking though, I would probably be quite jealous. After 8pm all bets are off though, I tend to make those arrangements if I can!

What could be nicer, a lovely lunch in the sunshine with a nice glass of something
Then a little afternoon nap
It's the simple pleasures in life
Enjoy your wine @101cockerspaniels , you have got weird mates tho

My DGM was a great one for 'what people would think.' I pointed out that she had no control over it and people are going to think things anyway, whatever you do, so why not do what you want?

Almost every day If I go past mid-morning there's lots of people sitting outside our local Weatherspoons drinking, even if it's cold and they're wearing winter clothing. It's on the main road with lots of traffic and a bus stop a few yards, away.

It always think why?

TomatoSandwiches · 26/05/2023 12:34

I find the more you imbibe the less you care about the opinions of your company.

Beezknees · 26/05/2023 12:35

Probably, but I don't care. Love a daytime drink. I actually prefer it to going out in the evening.

Lcb123 · 26/05/2023 12:35

Not in my experience! I love a day time drink, and early night...

This.

I love wine when eating out but it makes me so tired and tipsy, I’m useless gir the rest of the afternoon and evening so it isn’t worth it for me.

Beachbabe1 · 26/05/2023 12:37

Love a day sesh!! No hangover the next day! Also cant stand judgey sober people!

Dinopawus · 26/05/2023 12:38

It's probably jealousy. I love a daytime drink in the sunshine. It's a rare event though, due to a combination of needing to drive everywhere and other things meaning I need to be awake and responsible.

Cheers Wine

I'm nearly 40 and want to arrange one of those bottomless brunches!

RagingWoke · 26/05/2023 12:40

Bottomless brunch is very popular, enjoyed one myself recently and definitely had enough cocktails the £30 felt reasonable 😁

Letsallthinkofaname · 26/05/2023 12:41

I don't drink but equally I don't judge. I will leave early though because I don't generally enjoy being around drunk people.

Genzken · 26/05/2023 12:41

I prefer a drink at lunch and then I have a good nights sleep too.

It's perfectly possible to enjoy a drink at lunchtime and not get drunk. It isn't binary, you know - either sober or rolling around in the gutter shitfaced.

CupEmpty · 26/05/2023 12:45

Agree, I would love to drink at lunchtime but I can’t anymore. Wine with lunch and an afternoon nap / early night as PP said would be bliss.

reality is being lethargic and having to still deal with 2 small children yelling at me. Not worth it.

I didn't say it wasn't possible. Just if people get drunk I will make me excuses and leave. If we are meeting and it's just a couple of drinks of course I'll stay!

ShoesoftheWorld · 26/05/2023 12:46

I like a glass of wine with a lunch out, but I won't if I'll need to be 'on' later (in whatever way). I don't have a very high tolerance and it can really knock me sideways. Sometimes I'll have a soft drink first and see how I feel. Sometimes I prefer a nice juice or mocktail.

I don't think anyone should need 'excuses' not to drink.
