The Perfect Cheeseboard - what's on it?

And also what else would you have with the cheeses?

Would love some ideas for something other than Branston pickle and celery!

Lots of our favourites above but also
-a good aged Red Leicester (sparkenhoe is lovely)
-Baron Bigod suggested above is amazing but we recently discovered the Truffle Baron which is awesome

I prefer plain crackers, melba toast or bread, with grapes and celery for simplicity.

But lots of cheese, lots and lots of cheese. At least 4 good ones plus a medium mature cheddar and a commercial Brie for the cheese 'undecideds'.

BigFatLiar · 25/05/2023 21:14

I like most cheeses and would be happy with any old selection, I'd actually be content with cheddar, brie and stilton.

With it I'd have crackers and chutney or some nice crusty bread with lots of butter.

BonjourCrisette · 25/05/2023 21:15

Langres
St Felicien
Roquefort
Mimolette

Grapes
Quince paste
Cornichons
Figs

Lots of different kinds of bread
Water biscuits

Good butter

So many great suggestions here, thank you so much!

Definitely going to look up some of those chutney flavours, as well as the cheeses and crackers. Going to attempt some homemade crackers too.

Ooooo mimolette! I forgot about that - particularly the really gnarly super aged one!

onlyconnect · 25/05/2023 21:34

My favourite accompaniment is celery
Definitely keep the cheese out of the fridge for seven hours ( I do days) before serving. That's far more important than what's with it.

Lolaandbehold · 25/05/2023 21:35

You need an aged compté

tobee · 25/05/2023 21:37

I love a really good pecorino. And you can't not have a goat. Gruyère. Like a salty Roquefort too. And something good and smelly. As pp says an epoisses that can be very stinky. Like a few bath Olivers. Surprise me with the chutney. Smile

dudsville · 25/05/2023 21:38

Ever since my cholesterol shot up all i want is cheese. Loads of delicious cheese. I like them with plain crackers, and no chutneys, i just want the cheese. I sometimes make heeseboards for a light dinner and then i will have beetroot, actual pickles, olives, tomatoes... but i can be happily satisfied with just the cheese and biscuits.

WashableVelvet · 25/05/2023 21:45

The really old mimolette is ‘tulipe noire’ I think.

I’ll have a Saint-Felicien for soft, maybe a Sainte-Maure for goat, and a truffled pecorino (plus a dab of honey on the side) for sheep.

Washed rind cheeses are banned from my fantasy cheeseboard.

For blue, I’ll have a packet of supermarket St Agur. I know there are fancier and rarer ones but that’s what I love 😆

Maybe something nice and safe like a Tomme de Savoie for people who prefer not to stray too far from cheddar. Or a cantal.

Apple slices to go with.

frozendaisy · 25/05/2023 21:47

The best brie money can buy and small really crispy rosemary crackers

CuteCillian · 25/05/2023 21:48

An oozing honeycomb on top of a Somerset Brie served with Bath Olivers and pecan nuts.

I‘be recently discovered Castillo Blue Creamy Cheese - it will definitely be on my future cheese boards. Hubby loves a smoked applewood cheddar

I have both of those on my cheese board and gorgamzola, brie, strong mature cheddar, goats cheese, and a Cheshire. Grapes, crackers, and pringles.

Yes, that's the one I want! So good.

BonjourCrisette · 25/05/2023 22:21

I can't do goat. It tastes and smells like actual live goat to me.

RoseRobot · 25/05/2023 22:28

A pale young Stilton - not too yellow, waxy or stinky
A mature quartz Cheddar
A soft brie-like cheese - Pie de l'Anglois is good
Roule or herby boursin. Always the first to get finished on a cheese board
An aged Compte

Peter's sourdough crackers, water biscuits, charcoal wafers and those mini Hovis bread-shaped crackers (just for the stilton)
Fig chutney
Grapes
Fresh figs
Quince jelly
celery sticks

Maddy70 · 25/05/2023 22:37

Manchego
A blue cheese
A goat cheese
A normal cheese (Cheshire etc)
A fancy cheese.. brie stuffed with truffle

Snugglemonkey · 25/05/2023 23:51

On mine, always cashel blue, mmm. I put celery sticks, apples, grapes and sometimes I candy walnuts. Beetroot crackers and other yummy ones. A strong cheddar, a good brie. These are the necessaries. Other cheeses more than welcome.

onlyconnect · 26/05/2023 17:31

There's a company called Pong which sells really good cheese.

Azealeasinbloom · 26/05/2023 17:37

Lots of great suggestions above - just one cheese to add- Alp Blossom.
Our local specialist cheese shop sells this and it is fab.
Looks like someone’s rolled it in some wildflowers ( which are edible) but the cheese is nutty and delicious and the pretty rind makes it look stunning on a cheese board.

allthewoes · 25/05/2023 20:35

A really nice vintage cheddar, maybe Cornish crackler. A Stilton, a ripe Brie, and a fruity cheese, I like the Wensleydale with apricots. Carr's cheese melt crackers, some red onion chutney, a spicy tomato chutney, grapes, pink lady apples and some mixed nuts/dates.

Are you me?!

BonjourCrisette · 26/05/2023 20:18

Alp Blossom sounds amazing!

Babdoc · 26/05/2023 20:21

Dovedale blue. Snowdonia Black bomber cheddar. Komijnekaas (Gouda with cumin seeds). Somerset goat cheese.
Peter’s Yard sourdough crackers. Grapes.
Bliss!

Redebs · 26/05/2023 20:27

Mmmmm.. cheeeeese!
