If you wear a hearing aid

Do you ever get the crap scared out of you when it beeps to let you know the battery is low?

It seems to be a thing lately. I jump every time. There’s no other sign. It doesn’t start to get quiet, it just suddenly goes bong bong.

Oticon Engage supplied by local NHS ENT department.

They are Danalogic Ambio S 77.

From the NHS. I'm also in North Wales.

I have a Samsung S22 so I think that's a fairly recent model?

You should be ok with an S22 @EarlofShrewsbury .

This is the website I’ve been using as a reference for Android with Our type of hearing aid.

http://go.gn.com/app-support

You need to scroll down to the page a bit to the section starting

Use your Android™ device with your hearing aid

Underneath the list of phones there’s a paragraph on issues with Samsung phones, the short of it is you should be on Android 13 to avoid issues.

I have Phonik aids. I went to Boots. Pleased how small they are compared to my previous NHS one. They moulded the ear piece to my ear and it was so uncomfortable I stopped wearing it.

As said by previous posters, I have the app where I can set up several profiles for different needs. But I can also adjust as and when I want. I can narrow or widen the 'throw' to suit my surrounds. Rechargeable too, so no need to replace batteries. Plays a quite muted sound when getting low charge but usually still a long time left. Never had them go totally off so far.

Bluetooth so happily pairs up with my iPhone. Also Bluetooth to my TV. No more sub-titles or high volume needed Grin

Phonak not Phonik....

JustDanceAddict · 26/05/2023 16:16

I have Menieres and thought I’d have to have an aid but my hearing has improved recently (it does fluctuate w Menieres). I probably will need one at some point, but the worst is the tinnitus. I have been told some HAs can help with that - I can cope w being a bit deaf in one ear but the noises get really annoying. Is this true?

May I ask how much they cost please?

Can I please ask about tinnitus and hearing loss? I've had tinnitus all my life but a lifetime of being a musician and my hearing is declining rapidly but the tinnitus is getting louder. If I went and got a hearing test and got hearing aids, would that help the tinnitus? If my hearing went completely would the tinnitus also go?

I have tinnitus and was issued a hearing aid recently. I was told that wearing a hearing aid would slow the decline of the hearing and help with tinnitus. I feel it helps with tinnitus, but I am not yet wearing it full-time - it needs to be adjusted slowly. There was also an article recently about the lack of wearing a hearing aid with hearing loss making dementia more likely: https://www.theguardian.com/society/2023/apr/13/hearing-aids-could-help-cut-the-risk-of-dementia-study-finds

Hearing aids could help cut the risk of dementia, study finds

Study provides best evidence yet to suggest hearing aids could mitigate potential impact of hearing loss on dementia

I've had re-chargeable Bluetooth HAs for a few years now, & they're great - mostly.
They went flat for the first time on a recent late-night flight, which made me realise just how deaf I am now.

They certainly help with tinnitus, & it's great to be able to connect to the TV & mobile 'phone

I get a noise like a steam train when my rechargeable aids are running low 😂
Mine are private aids, Phonak Audeo 90 that were £3.5K each but I had help from Access to Work to buy them.
The Bluetooth facility is a game changer.

I was told that's how much my NHS ones cost although I got them free. If I lost one I would have to pay £85.

caramac04 · 26/05/2023 22:25

I really hope I can get Bluetooth ones on the nhs as I do struggle with tv.

When I first got my ha’s I forced myself to wear them all the time for the first three weeks, as advised by audiologist, and I really think the ‘immersion’ helped my brain to adjust. There were times at work though when it was very tricky in those three weeks.

I have an Oticon Engage NHS hearing aid. It doesn't help my hearing much, but has a program to play wave like sounds continuously which helps mask my Tinnitus.

CountingMareep · 28/05/2023 11:55

My HA is Oticon Engage. It works really well with tech but its ’real world’ performance is unimpressive; I have to turn it up to get speech clarity. Does anyone else find the sound quality a bit ‘muddy’? I also find that it distorts frequencies when I’m listening to music on the car radio or telly (the sort where I can’t use Bluetooth).

I think they’ve compromised on their sound resolution so they can do the Bluetooth bit at a non-outrageous price.

Oh, that's lovely but your battery usage must be mad 😅

I use an app called Better Sleep which has got a variety of sounds and you can combine them. It's the only way I can sleep as I stick my ear phones deep in with rain sound playing

I haven't found that at all. Maybe they are faulty.

silverlentils · 28/05/2023 13:03

Yes I got new phonak NHS ones last year and they make a very sudden strident tone (like a car alarm going off) when the battery needs changing. Why they can't just gently beep like my old ones did, I don't know!

I reckon I get about 70 hours usage per battery. For night time use my NHS audiologist gave me one of these:
