If you wear a hearing aid

Do you ever get the crap scared out of you when it beeps to let you know the battery is low?

It seems to be a thing lately. I jump every time. There’s no other sign. It doesn’t start to get quiet, it just suddenly goes bong bong.

I had meningitis when I was 2. I was diagnosed with hearing loss at 5. I’m 35 this year so I’ve been deaf for nearly 30 years. It’s all I remember

@Mars27 I've just been googling Roger Pen but haven't been patients enough to absorb all the information .
My sil has HA and difficulty hearing .Do you think something like a Roger pen might allow her to enjoy a classical music concert in a church ?

I think it will, not only amplifies sound but also transmits the sound a lot more clearly straight to your HA. I've got mine through Access to Work (at work) as it helps me to do my job as I can connect it to my laptop and phone. I wouldn't be able to afford it privately as it's a bit steep for my pocket but if you can afford it it's a very worth purchase. Have a look here www.fmhearingsystems.co.uk/ or www.connevans.co.uk

@caramac04 My husband does the same and I just ignore him. It's been 18 years I've been telling him I'm deaf, maybe one day he'll learn (haha, who am I kidding?).

Mars27 · 26/05/2023 10:23

Tinnitus is a form of torture, isn't it? Mine started over 20 years ago and has been getting louder and louder. At first I ignored it but it's been getting unbearable recently. The audiologists recommended to wear your HA all the time to "compensate" and the tinnitus won't increase and I've never heard such bollox in my entire life 🙄

EarlofShrewsbury · 26/05/2023 10:27

I went to get my tubes changed earlier this week and they upgraded me to the new bluet

EarlofShrewsbury · 26/05/2023 10:31

Sorry posted to soon.

..to the new Bluetooth ones. Not only do they connect to the phone for calls and music and video streaming, they have an app where I can manually adjust the treble, bass etc to suit the environment I'm in. Plus the tech is just better so they are all round just better sound clarity too.

I mentioned I used my phone a lot for work and struggled to hear and the fact that new phones don't have a headphone jack was inconvenient and they upgraded me there and then.

They are AMAZING.

I’ve been looking into this area for a while now.
Apple devices, iPads and iPhones have been able to Bluetooth to hearing aids for year and years.
Though I needed to use the BeMore app on the iPad to make the initial connection between iPad and HAs.
once paired up, there’s no need for the BeMore app to be running.

Android phones are a different matter, at least for my NHS aids which are Resound Danalogic Ambio S 67 BTE models.

You need at least Android v10 and the phone manufacturer needs to enable Android Streaming for that phone.

Annoyingly, there’s a bug with Google Pixel phones ( or Android 13 ) that is preventing the pairing at the moment. 😡.

I’m North Wales, interesting to hear others have different models of HA in other NHS areas. I guess each Trust buys according to their preference?

Soubriquet · 26/05/2023 10:49

It’s the one thing that has annoyed me about phones. The newer ones no longer have a jack for headphones.

A Bluetooth hearing aid would be a dream come true for me!! Or at least it would have done when I worked as we were allowed to listen to music whilst we worked Grin

Do you mind me asking what brand are they? This would be ideal for me.

@tanstaafl I think you're right, it will depend on the trust. I think my Trust (I'm in London) only works with Phonak and Oticon.

EarlofShrewsbury · 26/05/2023 10:56

They are Danalogic Ambio S 77.

From the NHS. I'm also in North Wales.

I have a Samsung S22 so I think that's a fairly recent model?

Mine are Danalogic Ambio S 77 and I'm also in North Wales. I got them from Wrexham Maelor audiology dept.

I have a <pulls hearing aid out of ear>

urm…. Phonak nathos S+ M

whatever that means

rileynexttime · 26/05/2023 11:20

@Mars27 thank you .My sil 's hearing problems are mainly due to vasculitis damage so it's hard to know what might help . But she does have hearing aids so I suspect something that tweaks their performance might help .

I have tinnitus myself ,I do hate it .My HA do help I think ,at least I notice the tinnitus with a vengeance when I take them out to sleep .I suppose they mask it .

Neither my son nor partner understand that HA aren't magic and that if they are directing conversation from another room and I'm cooking in the kitchen with the washing machine on - I.CAN"T.HEAR .

Actually it's not as way out as it sounds - I find that I have tinnitus when I don't wear my HA's but it disappears when I wear them.

Mars27 · 26/05/2023 11:49

@Rainbow1901 I know, you're probably right, it's just that I don't wear my HAs most of the time as I hate them. If I'm out on the street I don't bother with them as all I'm going to hear is people shouting, motorbikes speeding and general noise. At home I only wear them when I'm on a call or in a meeting meeting. I work in the office two days a week and wear them there but the minute I come out the door I take them off.

Maybe I should be wearing them more but I really think that in the grand scheme of things they're not helpful if not connected to the Roger pen.

Nolongera · 26/05/2023 11:52

I was 50 when I found out I needed hearing aids and I mentioned it in a meeting at work.

One of my managers burst out laughing.

A band 6 nurse.

Ha fucking ha.

I understand where you are coming from as when I have new HA's everything sounds too loud and uncomfortable.
But having worn HA's all my life I can only suggest that you make yourself wear your HA's - in this way you will become used to wearing them and your brain will get used to all the noises and filter out excessive background noises so that you hear them but not painfully so. But I also understand the bliss when you can simply enjoy the peace and quiet of not wearing HA's.
I have never used a roger pen and managed to work without it but with the ever increasingly improved technology being able to link to mobile phones - it maybe something to consider for the future (or not as I've retired and now look after some of my grandchildren.)

Letsallthinkofaname · 26/05/2023 12:35

Can I please ask about tinnitus and hearing loss? I've had tinnitus all my life but a lifetime of being a musician and my hearing is declining rapidly but the tinnitus is getting louder. If I went and got a hearing test and got hearing aids, would that help the tinnitus? If my hearing went completely would the tinnitus also go?

Just yanked mine out too. It's a signia contrast s+ and pretty crap. Those of you getting the better quality NHS ones are you getting them from Specsavers or hospitals?

TrashyPanda · 26/05/2023 12:50

I think tinnitus is associated with hearing loss.

i can manage to tune mine out most of the time.

caramac04
My OTE digital aids are still noisy on windy days to the extent I don't wear them.
Poor design with the pickup microphone on top of the aids ideally placed when the wind blows over them

I wear a head band/ear warmer on windy days. It help a lot. Also, when I first got them I felt the the wind was going to blow them right off.

I went to the GP about my tinnitus. I didn't know I had hearing loss. I was referred to Audiology and immediately issued with the Hearing Aids which help a lot. Oticon.

It certainly helps with mine. I have screaming noises in my ears but when I put the HA in it almost completely stops.

Mars27 · 26/05/2023 13:12

@CaptainMyCaptain I know, I know, I'm in the wrong. Maybe if I start wearing them more the tinnitus will be masked.

@Rainbow1901 Aw, enjoy your grandkids 🙂
