Hello, my DH is going to visit an old friend in Glasgow at the weekend so DS (12) and I are going along too but need to find stuff for us to do on the Saturday while DH has plans. I've had a quick Google and the Science Centre looks like it could be a good option and I think DS would enjoy this. Does anyone have any other ideas? We are flying so won't have a car. We come back Monday morning. Any tips welcome! Never been before so no clue. thanks

Transport museum is good fun too. There's a Scotsnet section where you might get more responses?

Toytransportemergency · 25/05/2023 12:49

I think Saturday is some sort of big deal football wise so avoid the city centre.

Coronationstation · 25/05/2023 12:50

Kelvingrove museum

janeseymour78 · 25/05/2023 12:50

Yeah same as @Dooopylally the Riverside Museum (formerly 'Transport' museum) is great.

Also Kelvingrove has a good mix of art and general world stuff that kids enjoy. It's in the west end too which is lovely to just walk around and be in the parks

Coronationstation · 25/05/2023 12:52

Ride the "clockwork orange" underground.
There's a city mural trail Mural Trail : Home Page (citycentremuraltrail.co.uk)
Celtic are playing Aberdeen on Saturday at 12:30 and Rangers at home, I'm not aware of why there would be any issues as a result @Toytransportemergency ?

Not likely to be a problem. Celtic are playing at home but Parkhead is about 3 miles from the city centre. Queen St. station might be a bit busy but I wouldn't be worried about that.

Weekend76 · 25/05/2023 13:09

Thanks for suggestions I will look into them. We are staying in the city centre

Folk talking about the fball. Celtic are picking up the trophy and they plan to take over Glasgow cross (near merchant city) for a street party. See below article:

www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/celtic-fans-plan-merchant-city-30046774.amp

They did it last year and there was a lot of anti social behaviour to put it politely! So I wld def avoid that area!

West end has some lovely trendy places to eat and independent shops.

AffIt · 25/05/2023 15:19

If you're staying in the city centre, then the riverside in general is a good shout - science centre is fun, the riverside museum and Tall Ship is great and it's a nice walk down the river towards Finnieston / the west of Argyle St for nice indie boutiques / cafes / restaurants without going into the West End 'proper'.

But yeah, I'd probably stay away from Glasgow Cross / Merchant City.

Margarita45 · 25/05/2023 15:19

I’d probably do the Science centre and the transport museum for a 12 year old. The tall ship too (next to the museum).

Aren’t Rangers away to St Mirren on Saturday. There is a big youth football festival in Govan on Saturday though

airmaxJ · 25/05/2023 15:21

Definitely the transport museum is very good. Don't worry about the football it gets cleared quickly and friendly

airmaxJ · 25/05/2023 15:21

Oh yes well it will be busy I take that back

Snoozems · 25/05/2023 15:38

I haven't been for a couple of years but the Hunterian museum in Glasgow University was great when I visited and it's in the west end.

Coronationstation · 25/05/2023 15:40

sorry, i meant Rangers are away!

Champagneponies · 25/05/2023 15:45

Kelvingrove is impressive!

TipsyAndTommy · 25/05/2023 15:51

The football is really neither here nor there really. I've lived in the city centre/west end for 40 odd years and can literally only think of one time football has impacted me and that was during covid when the police brought all the rangers fans parading through the city for some crazy reason!

Anyway, I agree down by the riverside it a a good shout, science centre, transport museum and tall ship all within walking distance. It's looking like nice weather so you would also have kelvingrove park (Theres a skatepark if your DS would enjoy watching for a bit?!) or a wander up byres road to the botanic gardens from there too. All within walking distance if no car.

Underground or bus would take you from city centre in around 15 mins.

55balloons · 25/05/2023 16:04

Loved Glasgow. Kelvingrove Museum is unbelievable, we spent 5 hours there & should have spent the full day.
Amazing Egyptian area that tied in with what the dc were learning in school.
We found food very expensive.

Belindabelle · 25/05/2023 16:05

You can do the open top tour bus. It leaves from George Square and stops at all the main tourist attractions mentioned on this thread. It’s also a good way to see the stunning architecture and the tour guides are full of useful facts and info.

55balloons · 25/05/2023 16:05

Food & drink was very expensive in Glasgow in general. We were surprised at how costly it was.

Yep Celtic parade for winning the league.

Toytransportemergency · 25/05/2023 16:11

Sorry as PP said above its not the football game which is the issue. I’ve heard colleagues talking about buses with players which obviously means fans gathering along the bus route. I didn’t know it was about a trophy as I try my best to ignore football. (I’m a child of a bitter old firm fan and it ruins lots of things IMO)

Dooopylally · 26/05/2023 08:14

What route would the parade take..? From the foot all ground, but to where?

Dooopylally · 26/05/2023 08:15

(If anyone knows)

Scrambledchickens · 26/05/2023 08:28

If it’s hot on Saturday come to pollok park, it’s absolutely beautiful at the moment and the highland cows have new babies.
byres rd and finnieston are lovely for a wander and some lunch.
kelvingrove/ transport museum/ science museum all great too.
