About 2 days ago I discovered that Skegness isn’t in Scotland 😳 How did I never know this before? Embarrassingly, I’m 38 😂

well I didn't know that, though it's more of a factoid to "entertain" folks with at parties than a gamechanger/source of shame.

Helpful if you want to know where Northampton is compared to Southampton but not that helpful for Littlehampton.

I foolishly told a posh git that I always confused Norfolk & Suffolk. He sarcastically explained that the “Nor” in Norfolk meant north & the “Suff” in Suffolk meant south. How could I have been so thick?

I'd have been tempted to ask where, in that case, Wefolk and Eafolk were.

KirstenBlest · 28/05/2023 11:33

@Pixiedust1234 , I know where Derbyshire is because Stockport is roughly on the Cheshire, Lancashire (prob. GM nowadays), Derbyshire border. The ones that throw me are Peterborough and the Fens. They are further from the south than I picture them.

Derbyshire and Staffordshire are (North) Midlands, Derbyshire, Lincolshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire are East Midlands.

KirstenBlest · 28/05/2023 11:34

@CharlottenBurger , I'd have been tempted to ask if the same was true of Sussex and Norsex.

Utterknowitall · 28/05/2023 12:19

I did think that Santorini was in Italy 🙃

Until today I’ve always thought I was “as you watched yourself go by”

It came on the radio last night when I was with DH. We were both dumbfounded when she quite clearly says "gavotte"😀

It sounds like little tiny pasta.

SmudgeButt · 28/05/2023 12:56

As someone from elsewhere in the commonwealth I'd always heard England, Scotland, Wales and "Ireland" talked about as if they were separate countries and was surprised to realise that the parliament in London covers 3+ of those. It took a bit longer for me to understand the Irish but despite having heard about the troubles for decades.

For years I thought toothsome meant goofy, wabbity toothed eg Bugs Bunny.

Annemaria · 28/05/2023 13:22

You lot are so witty. If only I could push back with such ripostes. I’ve just remembered another annoying person who corrected my pronunciation of folic ( short “o” sound). She said it was pronounced with a long vowel sound as in “oh”. Only later when fuming over her assumed superiority did I think I should have said, “So you pronounce symbolic as symbowlic?” She also corrected my pronunciation of the town Bath, which, coming from Stockport I pronounce with a short “a”. She told me it should be pronounced Barth. I’m pleased to say that even her own grandchildren can’t stand her…

KirstenBlest · 28/05/2023 13:39

@Annemaria , it is 'fole-ic' but does it really matter, people knew what you meant.
I say Bath like you do, I'm from roughly the same area. Next time you see her, I'd say Barrrth

I used to think Torquay was a place in Spain 😳

Our older DD was with us on a pleasure boat crossing from Paignton to Torquay. She was about 5 at the time. She was getting excited about seeing Auntie Kate as we got close to Torquay harbour.

Unfortunately Auntie Kate lives in Turkey...

My husband is from Wigan, I'm from London. He says it with a short 'a', and I don't. We're both right.

KirstenBlest · 28/05/2023 14:19

@CharlottenBurger , does he say Bol-ton and Boorry?

CharlottenBurger · 28/05/2023 14:38

KirstenBlest · 28/05/2023 14:19

@CharlottenBurger , does he say Bol-ton and Boorry?

@KirstenBlest

Yes, he does. The best black puddings come from Boorry. His sister is called Clur, and we can't have Eccles cakes, they're crap, has to be Chorley cakes. We've sort of cross-fertilised each other, to some extent. His Wigan pals and rellies say he talks like 'a southern Jessie' these days. I say some words northern-style (also my dad's family is Derbyshire/Geordie) but not consistently.

KirstenBlest · 28/05/2023 14:56

@CharlottenBurger , I'm glad I asked. I am laughing here. how could I have forgotten chorley cakes!
Clare is definitely Clur. I've used it as an example of regional differences in name pronunciation more than once, and nobody on MN believes me that anyone says Clur. Grin

I'm team eccles cake, but I'm not really from cheshire, just over the border

worry not - I used to work with someone who insisted that Piazza should be pronounced Pi - aah - za. She thought the short a "variant" very common (as muck) Probably assumed that I pronounced it that way as I was an ignorant northerner.

I have a colleague who prides herself on being very 'correct'. She calls ciabatta 'see - a - barter'.

If it's Italian it's pee-at-za

JFDIYOLO · 28/05/2023 16:07

A school friend insisted it was pitsa and sintzano. Aaaaaaarg.

LovelyIssues · 28/05/2023 16:10

@Woahtherehoney I thought Dunkirk was in Scotland too!

innocentfun · 28/05/2023 16:10

May have been mentioned upthread - I know someone enraged at brexit and with a very black and white if not downright condescending view of anyone who voted for it who has been known to glory in his ever so sophisticated pals demonstrating their cultural superiority and gastronomic daring (as opposed to butty eaters) by relishing paninis together. Last thing I knew, in Italian "panini" is itself a plural.

innocentfun · 28/05/2023 16:14

for all those shocking folk (must admit I find it depressing - don't have to be a flagwaver to thing this I think) with the blindspot on Dunkrik, PBS America (freeview 84) is showing a prog on it today at 6.15.
