Wasn't it East Anglia that Jade Goody thought was not in the UK?

Yet apparently she drank in the local pub here, in EA!

ensayers · 25/05/2023 20:03

I found out today that pots of creme caramel,(the ones that look like yogurts) if u turn the pot upside there's a tiny foil strip, pull it off to reveal an air hole! Age 51 lol

chorleycake · 25/05/2023 20:03

I agree! I think it is the “..ness” that suggests Scotland, like Inverness, Loch Ness….

I had a lol with this thread . I admit I’m very surprised , it seems the U.K. education system has a lot to wish for . I’m from abroad but living here for 23 years and knew where every location mentioned here is together with at least 90% of where in the world countries and major cities are . We were made to learn that in school before we were 14 .

Why didn't I know that when Americans call their mate Creg, his name isn't Creg or Greg (which is what I also thought they were meant to be saying)... It'd actually Craig!

And the lyrics to You're So Vain are not

You had one eye in the mirror as you watched yourself go by...

They are in fact You had one eye in the mirror as you watched yourself gavotte..

I'm 53.

Similarly, Gram is Graham.

That there's only 7 years between the actresses who play mother and daughter Gail and Audrey Roberts in Coronation Street

I found out something in mumsnet while lurking a few days ago. I knew peppers could have baby peppers, as I have often been cutting open a pepper and there would be a tiny one inside it . But I didn't know how that happened until I saw a thread on here. I had seen bunches of carrots that looked anatomically correct before, but this was the first pepper with a Willy I had ever seen! 😀😀

Explain....please?

@LaMaG .Re Living on a Prayer, I thought a few lines on was..."Gina worked and died of old age" not "Gina works the diner all day."

I thought Gina won't stop dying of old aage

In the same vein, only 5 years between these actors from Love Actually.

Thank you very much once again for the info @GellerYeller who'd a thunk liquorice could be quite so interesting, eh? I'll be sure to never o'd on Pontefract cakes though lol :-D
You've certainly helped educate me today, that's for sure, so thanks again for taking the time to bother on, it's appreciated :-)

Painful memories of buying a bag of Liquorice Allsorts and eating them very quickly as I was driving, terrible couple of days followed.

Escourtiebabes · 25/05/2023 20:14

@UnctuousUnicorns Its in Essex I think

That the place I have heard about called Arkansaw and the place I have read about called Arkansas are in fact the same place.

Interestingly, I learned in a podcast, there is a little place in West Virginia that's both spelled and pronounced Arkansaw, and it frequently gets misspelled as Arkansas, much to the annoyance of its residents Grin

I always thought it was ridiculous that Jade Goody got derided mercilessly for not knowing where Anglesey was. As this thread shows, loads of perfectly intelligent and normal people, don’t know where lots of places in the UK are.

I don't remember Anglesey, I do remember her asking if Portugal was in Spain.

CharlottenBurger · 25/05/2023 20:29

JudgeJ · 25/05/2023 20:02

I felt sorry for poor Jade Goody. The tabloids savaged her. Did you know her mum spells her name Jackiey?

I've only found out today that Sharpies are not felt tip pens!

The classic sharpies are permanent markers. Also know as felt tips? What am I missing?

00100001 · 24/05/2023 20:41

That a pony is just a small horse....

Horses used to be measured in hands. A hand is 4 inches. A pony would be any equine up to 14.2hands - or 148cm in new money.
Over 148cm is a horse.
And they measure to the wither which is at the bottom of the neck above their front legs (where their mane ends and their back begins).

Antwerp isn't in England, it's in BELGIUM! I have no idea why I thought it was in England...and I still don't 100% believe it.

We have a family friend called Carl. I learned about 25 years later that his name isn't Carol but Carl. We're Scottish and add extra vowls to words (wor-uld instead of world, gir-ul instead of girl, wor-um instead of worm etc).

I know it isn't in England, but always think it sounds German. Whenever I hear Antwerp I immediately think of Germany then stop myself and say no wait, where is it?

BodegaSushi · 25/05/2023 20:33

Oldnproud · 25/05/2023 19:29

Permanent marker pens. There has been a whole thread on this today!

Markers are felt tips

GellerYeller · 25/05/2023 20:38

@EpicChaos @JudgeJ I enjoyed learning alongside you! Sorry about your ill effects J!

LilySavage · 25/05/2023 20:38

Logically I know Penrith is in Cumbria. Sounds Welsh and to my mind should be in between Bangor and Llanfairfechan.

I also thought Brunel university was in Swindon… not Uxbridge. Glad I checked or that would have been a detour 😂

Painful memories of buying a bag of Liquorice Allsorts and eating them very quickly as I was driving, terrible couple of days followed.

Oh dear @JudgeJ that must have been awful for you, you poor thing. :-(
At least you know to be careful with liquorice now but shame to find out the hard way.

Re Alnwick... Every year there is, or at least there used to be, the Alnwick fair when the locals would all dress up in costumes and there'd even be a ducking stool.
As for the street names - Within and Without, for me they don't beat Yorks' Whipmawhopmagate, lol.

Song You're so vain, by Carly Simon was supposedly written about actor Warren Beatty. Iirc, his sister was actress Shelley Winters?

Halfway - There is a bus route in Sheffield that goes to Halfway, which i thought quite funny when i saw it. Halfway to where from where? :-/

Oh and Butlins at Skeggy, was the first Butlins camp, hi - di - hi!

OnedayIwillfeelfree · 25/05/2023 20:39

Oysters are alive when they are served in restaurants. And they are alive for up to 6 hours in your digestive system as nobody chews them, just swallows them. If you are served a dead one they are likely to poison you.

Eh, yes, but..

A Highland Pony is still a Highland Pony if it goes over-height. It doesn't become a Highland Horse..

Ditto all the native pony breeds.

Ponies are different to horses in more ways than simply height. They have proportionally smaller heads, ears, shorter legs...

Anyway, nevermind that because today I learned the earth shattering fact, and possibly the most favourite brilliantest thing I've ever learned... ever...

Sea Otters have pockets. Not only do they have pockets. But they keep their favourite pebbles in them!!!

(Otter pockets are under their armpits, in case you ever need to frisk one.)
